  1. I’m not on the fire Yzerman train. But Cossa, Lombardi, William Wallinder, and Antti Tuomisto were all horribly mismanaged. All were out of waiver options and never got a sniff at the NHL level (other than part of a game for Cossa). Cossa and Lombardi are now gone for less than we paid to get them (or perhaps par for Lombardi – I know we got him for a fourth so it’s about par; Cossa is a clear loss but I’m happy we recouped a first). I assume we lose Tuomisto in the off-season (although I’ve heard good things about his play this past year). Maybe none of these guys ever had it, but I feel like if that’s the case, we should have sold them sooner.

    1. The Wings did a lot of mismanagement of prospects under the late Lalonde regime. The Wings have to at least treat Grand Rapids like a permeable obstacle, someplace that’s actually going to provide a foundation for players that earn call-ups over the course of the regular season.

It can’t just be calling up the same AHL veterans–“the kids” deserve chances to steal jobs and earn “cups of coffee” with the big team, because if you don’t afford them opportunities to develop at the NHL level, they never will develop at the NHL level.

I hope that coach McLellan gets that message through to Yzerman, Horcoff and the rest of the Wings and Griffins’ management.

      1. Agree 100%. I know you’re in the “keep improving” camp, but I think this coming season is a good time to play the kids, call up the prospects, and see what you actually have. It’s probably a small step back, but we’ve been grinding everyone towards a playoff spot. I think that the team made a lot of development mistakes on that path.
