Red Wings-Bruins Tweetcap: Shootout loss, momentum win

The Detroit Red Wings opened a 2-game home-and-home series against the Boston Bruins while battling through a 3-game losing streak. Boston wouldn’t have the services of David Pastrnak, but when you’re struggling like the Red Wings, the enemy within is often more difficult to battle than the enemies you face.

On Saturday night at TD Garden, the Red Wings lost a very literally hard-fought game to the Boston Bruins, dropping a 3-2 shootout decision.

Jeremy Swayman stopped 26 of 28 shots and 3 Red Wings shooters; Cam Talbot stopped 17 of 19 and afforded Casey Mittlestadt the shootout winner.

However, the Wings rallied from 2 1-goal deficits (both on goals from Morgan Geekie) in a low-event game, via goals from Lucas Raymond at 6:38 of the 3rd and Michael Rasmussen at 18:06, with Cam Talbot pulled for an extra attacker.

Dylan Larkin also had 2 assists, and Moritz Seider worked his ass off to rally after getting into a scrap which Mark Kastelic won handily.

PREGAME: Cam Talbot and Jeremy Swayman led their respective teams out for warmups…

The Bruins have gone from posting their starters to posting their entire lineup, and here it is, without one David Pastrnak…

Detroit’s lineup didn’t include James van Riemsdyk, Jacob Bernard-Docker or Jonatan Berggren. Given how well JvR has played lately, it’s hard to believe that the flu bug that’s going through the Wings’ room didn’t strike another Wings player.

1ST PERIOD:

The teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

Boston came out playing a hard and heavy game, nearly scoring on the first shift as Cam Talbot blubbed a puck behind the net and Casey Mittelstadt nearly tucked one in, but Edvinsson kept one out.

PENALTY: Jonathan Aspirot was called for tripping Emmitt Finnie at 4:20 of the 1st period.

Detroit didn’t generate much on the PP and Steeves hit the crossbar on the first play after Boston killed the penalty…

And Edvinsson pissed off Zadorov for partially snowing Swayman.

PENALTY: Nikita Zadorov was called for holding Alex DeBrincat at 11:03 of the 1st period.

Not only did Detroit find itself unable to score on the power play, but shortly thereafter, Morgan Geekie raced in between Seider and Edvinsson to send a breakaway shot into Cam Talbot…

Worse, Travis Hamonic exited the ice with about 4:30 remaining in the 1st, dropping Detroit down to 5 defensemen…But he did return with 3:03 remaining.

PENALTIES: Mark Kastelic, a heavyweight, challenged Moritz Seider in the corner of the Wings’ side of center, and Seider fought valiantly, but lost the war as the B’s goon punched Seider up pretty heavily.

Seider and Kastelic got 5 minutes for fighting at 19:35 of the 1st.

PENALTY: Worse, Ben Chiarot got called for hooking at 20:00 of the 1st period, affording Detroit a 4-defenseman penalty kill for the first 2 minutes of the 2nd period.

2ND PERIOD:

GOAL: At 4:35 of the 2nd period, Morgan Geekie tipped down a point shot from Hampus Lindholm in the Wings’ slot, and Cam Talbot never had a chance to stop the shot.

Boston 1, Detroit 0: Geekie (19) from Lindholm (7) at 4:25 2nd period.

Moritz Seider took until the 6:30 mark of the 2nd period to return to the Red Wings’ bench. I would imagine that he got tagged by the concussion spotter after getting punched in the face repeatedly.

PENALTY: Hampus Lindholm got 2 minutes for interfering with Emmitt Finnie at 7:16 of the 2nd period.

The Wings’ 2nd PP unit had a good shift, with Michael Rasmussen stopped twice at point blank range by Swayman…But Detroit did not score.

The 2nd period was definitely “low event hockey,” because the Bruins held Detroit to fewer than 10 shots through the first 30 minutes of play…

3RD PERIOD:

After a very big hit by Moritz Seider on Steeves at the B’s blueline, Elmer Soderblom got a fantastic chance on Swayman, but the B’s goaltender made a fine stop…

Finnie earned an up-the-wing shot as well..

GOAL: Off a fine rush by Emmitt Finnie, Finnie took a giveaway and sent the pass laterally to Dylan Larkin, Larkin fired a long bomb on goal and Lucas Raymond tipped it past Jeremy Swayman to tie the game 1-1.

Boston 1, Detroit 1: Raymond (8) from Larkin (14) and Finnie (7) at 6:38 3rd period.

PENALTIES: Ben Chiarot was called for roughing Mark Kastelic at 7:24 of the 3rd, and Kastelic was called for roughing Chiarot, all after a Bruin knocked ASP into the bench back first. Sandin Pellikka would return after a spell in the locker room.

PENALTY: Ben Chiarot took a high-sticking penalty with 6:48 left in the 3rd period/13:12 expired.

GOAL: Morgan Geekie would score on a lateral pass from Casey Mittlestadt upon which Cam Talbot had no chance, set up by Elias Lindholm, at 13:39 of the 3rd period.

Boston 2, Detroit 1: Geekie (20) from Mittelstadt (6) and Lindholm (8) at 13:39 3rd, PPG.

PENALTY: Andrew Peeke sat for tripping at 14:04 of the 3rd period.

GOALIE PULL: With 2:42 remaining, Cam Talbot headed to the bench.

GOAL: Dylan Larkin slid the puck diagonally to Patrick Kane deep in the B’s end, Kane fed Rasmussen in the slot and Rasmussen jabbed the puck in past Swayman at 18:06 of the 3rd.

Boston 2, Detroit 2: Rasmussen (4) from Kane (11) and Larkin (15) at 18:06.

IN OVERTIME…

PENALTY: Elias Lindholm sat with 3:36 left in OT thanks to a DeBrincat rush. Tripping was called.

Detroit did not score and a shootout would be held.

IN THE SHOOTOUT…
