Red Wings-Senators Tweetcap: Detroit rebounds from slow start to capture some OT magic in Ottawa

The Detroit Red Wings began their stretch run drive with a three-game road trip, starting with Thursday night’s game against the Ottawa Senators.

At the Canadian Tire Centre, the Red Wings were out-shot, out-hit, out-blocked and dominated in the faceoff circle, winning only 39% of the draws…..

But John Gibson stopped 26 of 27 shots, Detroit rallied from Brady Tkachuk’s late-1st-period goal, and captain Dylan Larkin scored a 2nd period PPG and he followed that up with an overtime winner to deliver a hard-fought, gritty, grind-y 2-1 overtime victory over the Senators. Detroit’s now 3-and-0 against Ottawa this season:

PREGAME: John Gibson and Linus Ullmark led their respective teams out onto the ice…

And the Red Wings officially activated Simon Edvinsson from their IR:

The Sens made an educated guess about Tim Stuetzle, who would play despite being sick…

And the Wings’ lineup included just about everybody that’s healthy, save Hamonic and Gustafsson:

1ST PERIOD:

The teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

GOAL: After the Ottawa Senators dominated offensively, James van Riemsdyk sent a pass up to Michael Rasmussen, who ripped a shot through Ullmark…

CHALLENGE: but what would have been Rasmussen’s 7th, from Van Riemsdyk (12) and Chiarot (8) at 8:11 of the 1st, was offside as Elmer Soderblom could not QUITE drag his leg to stay onside.

By the 10-minute mark of the 1st, after 2 really good start-of-the-game shifts, Ottawa was leading in shots 8-3, and Detroit was spending far too much time in its own zone.

PENALTY: Off an odd pass from John Gibson, Patrick Kane flicked an on-edge puck out of play at 11:42.

Detroit killed the penalty, thought Ottawa continued to dominate possession and control along the boards.

PENALTY: Jacob Bernard-Docker sat at 17:45 for hooking.

GOAL: Ottawa opened the scoring as the puck booted off Dylan Cozens’ skate to Matthew Tkachuk, who fired the puck through the slot and Gibson at 18:44 of the 1st.

Ottawa 1, Detroit 0: Tkachuk (15) from Sanderson (36) and Stuetzle (34) at 18:44 1st, PPG.

2ND PERIOD:

PENALTY: Ridly Greig took a penalty for hooking Simon Edvinsson at 5:10 of the 2nd.

GOAL: On the power play, Dylan Larkin got tied up on the faceoff, Lucas Raymond bumped it back to Seider, Seider fed Raymond and he dropped it to Larkin in the slot to make it 1-1.

Ottawa 1, Detroit 1: Larkin (27) from Raymond (42) and Seider (32) at 5:24 2nd period.

But Claude Giroux would clang a puck off the goalpost on the ensuing faceoff’s 2-on-2 rush…

PENALTY: Simon Edvinsson clipped Brady Tkachuk in the face with an elbow at 7:40 of the 2nd, got in a fight with Dylan Cozens, and the refs called the penalty a major under review.

PENALTIES: Dylan Cozens got 2 for roughing and 5 for fighting at 7:40, and Edvinsson got 2 for interference and 5 for fighting…

And Brady Tkachuk raced toward the penalty box to bark at Edvinsson, so Tkachuk got a 10-minute misconduct.

PENALTY: Tyler Kleven was called for cross-checking at 12:35 of the 2nd period.

3RD PERIOD:

PENALTIES: John Gibson was called for roughing and Ridly Greig was called for goaltender interference at 1:35 of the 3rd.

RETURN: James van Riemsdyk took a puck off the cheek in the 2nd period, and he returned to the bench with chin protection.

IN OVERTIME:

GOAL: Dylan Larkin won a defensive zone faceoff, cycled through the slot, fed Lucas Raymond on the right wing half boards, and then Larkin blazed past and through Ottawa’s Ridly Greig, charging through the middle. Lucas Raymond fed Larkin and he broke in alone on Ullmark, firing a five-hole shot through Linus to score the OT winner.

Ottawa 1, Detroit 2: Larkin (28) from Raymond (43) at 1:50 of OT. GWG.
