Red Wings-Bruins Tweetcap, rematch version: The squeaky win gives the Wings some ‘grease’

The Detroit Red Wings attempted to snap an 0-3-and-1 streak against the same Boston Bruins team that delivered a 3-2 shootout loss to the Wings on Saturday evening, all ahead of a 6-game road trip that will test the team’s resolve.

On Tuesday nigh at Little Caesars Arena, the Red Wings prevailed in a 5-4 decision over the Boston Bruins, nearly blowing 3-0 and 5-2 leads in the process…

But John Gibson, 2 bad 5-hole goals included, stopped 31 of 35 shots, Detroit was able to yank Jeremy Swayman, who gave up 5 on 23, and James van Riemsdyk, Moritz Seider, Alex DeBrincat, Ben Chiarot and Lucas Raymond all scored…

Seider had a goal and two assists, Kane had 2 assists, DeBrincat and Raymond both had a goal and an assist, Danielson of all people led the Wings with 5 shots, Bernard-Docker had 6 hits, and there was this, too:

PREGAME: John Gibson and Jeremy Swayman led their respective teams out onto the ice…

The Bruins actually posted their lineup at 6:59 PM, after doing a lot of talking about team toughness in their pregame comments…

And the Red Wings posted their lineup at 6:55 PM:

1ST PERIOD:

The teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

GOAL: Despite the Bruins trapping the snot out of the Red Wings and taking a 5-1 shot advantage, John Gibson held the Wings in the game until Albert Johansson dumped a hard pass to the far blueline, where James van Riemsdyk roared in on Swayman and chipped a puck over the Bruins goaltender’s glove at 6:52.

Detroit 1, Boston 0: van Riemsdyk (4) from Johansson (3) and Seider (14) at 6:52 1st period.

GOAL: Moritz Seider took a lateral pass from Patrick Kane at the Bruins’ blueline, chugged up the left wing and blasted a shot through an Andrew Copp screen to make it 2-0 Detroit at 13:49 of the 1st period.

Detroit 2, Boston 0: Seider (4) from Kane (12) and DeBrincat (15) at 13:49 1st.

2ND PERIOD:

Only 1:35 into the 2nd period, as the Red Wings were trying to work a line change in the offensive zone, a bouncing puck rolled to Alex DeBrincat in the slot, he ripped it through Jeremy Swayman, and that was that–3-0 Detroit.

Detroit 3, Boston 0: DeBrincat (13), unassisted at 1:35.

PENALTY: Simon Edvinsson got high-sticked in the back of the head by Eyssimont, and he was called for roughing in retaliation at 8:20 of the 2nd.

GOAL: Just after the penalty-kill expired, Tanner Jeannot and Nikita Zadorov fed the puck back to Aspirot, who ripped the puck through John Gibson, who should have stopped the shot at 11:09 of the 2nd period.

Detroit 3, Boston 1: Aspirot (1) from Zadorov (8) and Jeannot (8) at 11:02 2nd.

GOAL: Worse, Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson got tied up by Bruins at either side of John Gibson, Morgan Geekie and Hampus Lindholm cycled the puck to Steeves, and he found the rebound coming off John Gibson and buried it.

Detroit 3, Boston 2: Steeves (4) from H. Lindholm (7) and Geekie (7) at 15:38 2nd period.

GOAL: Surprisingly, Emmitt Finnie chugged up the right wing from blueline to blueline, fed Lucas Raymond along the right wing side, he fed Dylan Larkin and a short Larkin pass to the slot went to Ben Chiarot who sent the puck through Swayman to make it 4-2 at 16:15 of the 2nd.

Detroit 4, Boston 2: Chiarot (4) from Larkin (16) and Raymond (20) at 16:15.

In the milestone department…

And the grit department…

3RD PERIOD:

PENALTY: Elias Lindholm was called for holding at 3:24 of the 3rd period for “chicken winging” James van Riemsdyk.

GOAL: Moritz Seider and Patrick Kane worked the puck through Raymond, to Kane, back to Seider, and Raymond ripped a hard shot through Swayman at 3:55 of the 3rd period. Power play goal.

Detroit 5, Boston 2: Raymond (9) from Seider (15) and Kane (13) at 3:55 of the 3rd.

GOALIE CHANGE: Joonas Korpisalo was brought in to relieve Swayman, who gave up 5 goals against on 23 shots.

Injury: Michael Rasmussen left the bench around the TV timeout at 7:15 of the 3rd period, per Ken Daniels.

PENALTIES: Nikita Zadorov got 4 minutes for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct, and Moritz Seider got 2 minutes for roughing after the duo discussed why Zadorov tried to rag-doll Emmitt Finnie. The refs stepped in before the two could fight.

Nate Danielson almost scored off a glorious feed from James van Riemsdyk, but Joonas Korpisalo made a tremendous stop on the power play.

PENALTIES: Mark Kastelic attempted to spear Kasper at the bench and he got 2 for slashing and 10 for a misconduct at 13:27 of the 3rd period.

PENALTY: Moritz Seider got called for an inadvertent high stick at 14:05 of the 3rd period. He didn’t mean to tap the B’s player in the face.

GOAL: Marat Khusnutdinov sent a lateral pass from Hampus Lindholm through a stretched-out John Gibson at 14:57 of the 3rd, 4 on 4, to make it 5-3. James van Riemsdyk missed his checking assignment.

Detroit 5, Boston 3: Khusnutdinov (4) from Lindholm (8) and Geekie (8) at 14:57.

GOALIE PULL: Boston pulled Korpisalo with 3:23 remaining in the 3rd period.

GOAL: Boston dominated the game with Korpisalo out, and Steeves scored from Zacha and Hampus Lindholm at 19:48 of the 3rd period.

Detroit 5, Boston 4: Steeves (5) from Zacha (13) and Hampus Lindholm (9) at 19:48 3rd.
