Red Wings-Blues Tweetcap: Detroit rallies from a 4-0 deficit to win 6-4 over St. Louis

The Detroit Red Wings attempted to snap a two-game losing streak as they opened a home-and-home series with the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night.

Heading into their 9th game of the regular season, the Red Wings could “stick the landing” by improving their 5-3-and-0 record, or they could wander back toward becoming a .500 team.

On Saturday night at Little Caesars Arena, the Red Wings somehow prevailed in a wild and woolly 6-4 victory over the Blues, snapping that 2-game losing streak.

St. Louis took a 4-0 lead on goals by Kyrou, Neighbours (2) and Buchnevich, but after the 2nd Neighbours goal at 3:12 of the 2nd period, coach McLellan called a timeout, and chewed out his team…

And the Red Wings slowly but surely climbed back, via a power play goal by Jonatan Berggren at 7:52, a pair of late-period goals by Finnie at 18:34 and Compher at 19:01 of the 2nd…

And in the 3rd period, Alex DeBrincat scored his first goal of the game on a glorious shot, and Simon Edvinsson would salt the game away with both a game-winner 47 seconds after DeBrincat’s game-tying marker…And Edvinsson would score the empty-netter after some fine John Gibson saves (and a couple of goalposts).

Six straight goals and a hell of an effort over the final period-and-a-half of the game = Detroit received a result that was equal to its work ethic after coach McLellan straightened them out.

Detroit now gets two days off before rematching with the Blues as the teams battle in St. Louis, kicking off a 5-game road trip.

PREGAME: John Gibson and Jordan Binnington led their respective teams out onto the ice at LCA:

Sportlogiq’s Mike Kelly also discussed the snakebit Alex DeBrincat on the FanDuel Sports Network pregame show:

The Blues just list their starters…

And Detroit went 11-and-7, with Michael Rasmussen sitting out:

1ST PERIOD: The teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

Detroit was still shaking the “P.U. stinky” out of their game early on, playing tentatively and losing puck battles, as well as surrendering great scoring chances to the Blues…

PENALTY: James van Riemsdyk sat for tripping at 5:52 of the 1st, just after the Wings got their first shot against St. Louis at 5:17.

GOAL: St. Louis’ Jordan Kyrou scored on the power play, sending a scintillating shot over John Gibson’s ear at 7:43.

St. Louis 1, Detroit 0: Kyrou (2) from Fowler (2) and Snuggerud (2) at 7:43 1st, PPG.

Alex DeBrincat then hit the goalpost behind Binnington, but was unable to solve the Blues’ goaltender…

GOAL: Justin Faulk walked in with Ben Chiarot and Andrew Copp trying to take two Blues’ sticks away from play, and Jake Neighbours was able to evade coverage, tipping home a shot past Gibson at 12:54 of the 1st.

St. Louis 2, Detroit 0: Neighbours (5) from Faulk (2) and Thomas (4) at 12:54 1st.

Alex DeBrincat then hit the crossbar behind Binnington…

Jimmy Snuggerud hit John Gibson at the lip of the crease around 15:00 into the 1st, and no one responded…

PENALTY: Cam Fowler was called for a lazy slash on Lucas Raymond at 15:32 of the 1st period, affording Detroit a crucial power play.

On the power play, Seider, Raymond, DeBrincat, Larkin and Finnie worked well, with Larkin shanking a shot wide in the slot from DeBrincat;

Finnie tried to reverse to DeBrincat with Blues in the slot, however, over-complicating, and old Pius Suter was a thorn in the Wings’ side on the PK.

ASP, MBN, Compher, van Riemsdyk and Kasper worked on the 2nd unit, and Brandsegg-Nygard was blocked out of play by Parayko on a TREMENDOUS shot opportunity.

Perhaps symbolizing the Red Wings’ struggles, Ben Chiarot slid a lovely pass up the middle of the ice in the defensive zone…Onto the stick of Snuggerud, affording the Blues’ #21 an amazing shot opportunity up the middle of the slot that was thankfully shot wide.

2ND PERIOD:

Bafflingly, Oskar Sundqvist got behind EVERYBODY to nearly tuck the puck in on Gibson under 20 seconds in, and…

PENALTY: Simon Edvinsson was called for holding at 27 seconds of the 2nd period, affording St. Louis a PP.

GOAL: Pavel Buchnevich got loose in the slot, and he was able to easily tip a shot through both Moritz Seider and John Gibson from about 10 feet out at 59 seconds of the 2nd period.

St. Louis 3, Detroit 0: Buchnevich (2) from Holloway (2) and Faulk (3) at 59 seconds 2nd period, PPG.

GOAL: Then Jacob Bernard-Docker and Simon Edvinsson both skated into the left side of the ice, affording Jake Neighbours the opportunity to walk into a pass from Robert Thomas and rip a shot through Gibson’s 5-hole.

St. Louis 4, Detroit 0: Neighbours (6) from Thomas (5) and Snuggerud (3) at 3:12 2nd period.

TIMEOUT: Coach McLellan called timeout at 3:12…

Axel Sandin Pellikka did send a shot in on Binnington from distance, via Chiarot, that was afforded a scoring chance, at least…

Even Moritz Seider skated into Snuggerud and afforded him a breakaway, which Gibson stopped…

And at 6:25, Lucas Raymond was ran into Binnington, and the clans clashed in a bunch of bumping and grinding.

PENALTY: Kessel got the only penalty from the scrum, sitting at 6:25 for cross-checking.

GOAL: Off a fine set of plays from Axel Sandin Pellikka and Andrew Copp on the left-hand side of the ice, Jonatan Berggren ripped a one-timer through Binnington at 7:52 to score a power play goal.

St. Louis 4, Detroit 1: Berggren (2) from Copp (2) and Sandin Pellikka (1) at 7:52, PPG.

Then Marco Kasper ripped a shot over St. Louis’ Binnington, but missed the net at one end of the ice…

PENALTY: And J.T. Compher held Jordan Kyrou, affording St. Louis a power play at 8:33.

Detroit killed the penalty, and Marco Kasper bumped Binnington accidentally on purpose…

But Snuggerud hit the goalpost at 12:30…

Jacob Bernard-Docker got walked around and Gibson had to make a poke check…

GOAL: Detroit chipped the puck in deep, Dylan Larkin retrieved and centered, the puck bounced off Justin Faulk, and Emmitt Finnie scored to make it 4-2 at 18:34 of the 2nd period.

St. Louis 4, Detroit 2. Finnie (4) unassisted at 18:34 2nd period.

GOAL: J.T. Compher then tipped a puck down at crossbar height from a Travis Hamonic shot that went up high, and Compher scored 27 seconds after Finnie to make it 4-3!

St. Louis 4, Detroit 3: Compher (2) from Hamonic (1) at 19:01 2nd period.

3RD PERIOD:

Jonatan Berggren forced Jordan Binnington to stretch out to stop a backhand early, and Dylan Larkin was sprung on a BREAKAWAY, but Larkin missed the net some 2:00 into the 3rd.

PENALTY: Nick Bjugstad hacked Dylan Larkin in the neck with an inadvertent high stick, so Detroit headed to the power play at 5:08.

St. Louis killed the penalty, in no small part because Binnington stopped Berggren, and because the Red Wings’ rookies got a little cute, with Michael Brandsegg-Nygard sending what should have been a shot attempt as a pass into a Blues defender without any pressure on him.

GOAL: Alex DeBrincat skated laterally on a 3-on-3 with Finnie and Appleton, and DeBrincat put the shot over Binnington’s pad and under his blocker to score the game-tying goal. Finnie scored at 10:01 of the 3rd, unassisted.

St. Louis 4, Detroit 4: Alex DeBrincat (1), unassisted at 10:01 3rd.

GOAL: 47 seconds later, Simon Edvinsson took a pass from J.T. Compher, rifled a blueline wrist shot toward the goal, and he fluttered the puck off a Blues defender’s hip and into the goal past Jordan Binnington at 10:48.

St. Louis 4, Detroit 5: Edvinsson (2) from Compher (3) and Berggren (2) at 10:48 3rd.

With 4:40 left in the 3rd, John Gibson made TWO huge stops as the ENTIRE RED WINGS TEAM let Jordan Kyrou sneak behind their coverage…

PENALTY: Marco Kasper took a delay of game penalty with 3:53 left in the 3rd, after Kyrou hit the goalpost over Gibson’s shoulder with 4:00 left.

Detroit killed the penalty, and with 1:30 left in the 3rd period, Mason Appleton iced the puck, affording the Blues the opportunity to pull their goaltender.

TIMEOUT St. Louis.

GOALIE PULL: Binningon headed to the bench with 1:30 left in the 3rd.

GOAL: Off a John Gibson stop, Simon Edvinsson ripped a second goal down the ice via a nearly 200-foot shot that rolled into the empty net to give Detroit a 6-4 lead.

St. Louis 4, Detroit 6: Edvinsson (3) unassisted at 18:47 3rd, empty net.

  1. Credit to McLellan for calling that timeout and calling the players out. But this was the wildest regular season Wings game I’ve watched. The fact that Hamonic was +3 pretty much sums it all up.

PS-Props to Mickey for hanging in there and calling the game. You could tell he was under the weather.
