Red Wings-Islanders Tweetcap: Detroit drops a 7-2 decision on Long Island

The Detroit Red Wings attempted to rebound from Wednesday’s difficult loss to the Buffalo Sabres by taking their frustrations out on Patrick Roy’s New York Islanders on Thursday night.

Back-to-back games are never easy, but the Wings needed to earn at least a couple of points out of their two-game set to keep up with their rapidly-rising foes in the NHL standings.

Thursday night on Long Island, the Detroit Red Wings got embarrassed, losing 7-1 to the Islanders. Emil Heineman had 2 goals, Anders Lee had 3 assists, the Islanders finished at a massive +30, and Patrick Roy’s team smoked Detroit. Dylan Larkin (6) did score to extend his point streak, assisted by Emmitt Finnie (4) and Alex DeBrincat (7)…And Jonatan Berggren did score a pretty goal from J.T. Compher and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, giving the Norwegian his first NHL point…

But those were the only highlights. The Wings lost their challenge of an Islanders goal, the Isles’ fans got free chili for scoring 6 on the Wings, and Detroit has now lost 2 straight games in 2 evenings, dropping to 5-and-3 over the course of their first 8 games.

The Red Wings will head home to play their 3rd game in 4 nights on Saturday, hosting the St. Louis Blues, before embarking on a 5-game road trip which starts in St. Louis next Tuesday.

PREGAME: Cam Talbot and David Rittich led their respective teams out onto the ice at UBS Arena…

We had to rely upon the Islanders’ beat writers for their lineup…

And the Red Wings posted their lines closer to game time, for good reason–the lineup was tweaked on all four forward lines:

1ST PERIOD: The respective teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

The Islanders started Jonathan Drouin, Bo Horvat and Emil Heineman up front, with Adam Pelech and Ryan Pulock on defense, and David Rittich in goal;

The Red Wings started Emmitt Finnie, Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat up front, with Ben Chiarot and Moritz Seider on defense, and Cam Talbot in goal.

Also:

GOAL: The Islanders were able to take a wide Jonatan Berggren shot and skate up the ice the other way, with Simon Holmstrom sliding the puck up to Anders Lee, and as Bernard-Docker and Johansson took the right side of the ice together, Tony DeAngelo slid into an open slot and beat Berggren to the slot, where he fired a shot home over Talbot’s right shoulder.

Islanders 1, Detroit 0: DeAngelo (1) from Lee (3) and Holmstrom (3) at 2:05 1st period.

Detroit managed to get a couple of scoring chances on Rittich, but they were from the perimeter, and the Isles kept heading the other way with the puck.

Soderblom almost mashed Schaefer behind the net, but Schaefer got out of the way…

The Wings and Isles just traded chances for a couple of minutes…and by the first TV timeout at 6:51, Detroit was being out-shot 4-2, but the Wings had shanked 4 shot attempts wide, and 4 shot attempts into Islanders players.

PENALTY: Off a stupid set of Islanders chances generated by Simon Edvinsson getting too cute with a pass to Sandin Pellikka in the slot (with an Islander between them), Edvinsson took a holding minor at 8:16.

Detroit killed the penalty, but by the 13:06 mark, the Isles led in shots 8-4–despite the Red Wings leading in shot attempts 14-10.

At 14:10, Ben Chiarot blocked a shot with his hand, tossed the glove away, and had the fortitude to pick it up, skate to stay on the ice with the Isles in Detroit’s defensive zone, and he hammered Anders Lee before Detroit was able to clear the puck, and Chiarot headed to the bench and down the tunnel.

GOAL: Worse, Simon Edvinsson got tied up at the Islanders’ blueline, the Islanders raced the other way, and Marco Kasper stumbled as he tried to help Axel Sandin Pellikka, who was all alone vs. the 2-on-1. Emil Heineman was able to tap the lateral pass from Bo Horvat home at 14:55, affording New York a 2-0 lead.

Islanders 2, Detroit 0: Heineman (4) from Horvat (3) and Drouin (4) at 14:56 1st period.

PENALTY: Kyle Palmieri dumped Jonatan Berggren with a cross-check at 18:36 of the 2nd.

2ND PERIOD:

Detroit began the 2nd period with 36 seconds of power play time…

But Detroit did not get much of anything done on the PP.

Alex DeBrincat did almost jam the puck into the net off a fine steal by Dylan Larkin in the offensive zone some 2:17 into the 2nd period, and while the Wings iced the puck twice, they seemed to have some energy in their legs for the first time in the game.

Regrettably, the Wings were still turning over the puck like a bakery turns over Danishes, and Talbot had to make a couple of key saves as a result.

Detroit did have a good couple of shifts as the period hit minutes 5 and 6, buzzing the Islanders’ zone and sending pucks toward Rittich, occasionally hitting the goaltender…

GOAL: But the Red Wings turned over a Moritz Seider clearing pass at center ice, Seider and Chiarot skated toward the left side of the ice, and Michael Rasmussen let Jean-Gabriel Pageau blaze by. Pageau ripped a heavy shot through Talbot at 7:24 to make it 3-0.

Islanders 3, Detroit 0: Pageau (2) from Lee (4) and DeAngelo (2) at 7:25 2nd period.

PENALTY: Simon Edvinsson then took a slashing minor at 7:47, affording the Islanders a power play.

Albert Johansson, Jacob Bernard-Docker and J.T. Compher deserve props because they played 2:09 helping kill the second half of the second Edvinsson minor. They played great.

GOAL: Despite some good work by the Red Wings for a couple of shifts, Jacob Bernard-Docker accidentally put in a lateral pass from Ryan Pulock, and the goal was reviewed by the Red Wings for interference–but it stood.

Islanders 4, Detroit 0: Palmieri (3) from Pulock (3) and Barzal (5) at 13:09 2nd period.

PENALTY: Jonatan Berggren sat for delay of game at 13:09 as the Wings lost their challenge.

Detroit did kill the penalty…

PENALTY: Anders Lee sat for slashing at 17:14 of the 2nd period.

GOAL: After Axel Sandin Pellikka sent the puck up to Albert Johansson at the right side of center ice, Johansson chose to skate back toward the Wings’ blueline. Casey Cizikas and Anders Lee both grabbed Johansson, and Cizikas stole the puck, slid it across to Mat Barzal, and Barzal blazed in and roofed the puck over Cam Talbot.

Islanders 5, Detroit 0: Barzal (2) from Cizikas (1) at 19:34 2nd period.

3RD PERIOD:

PENALTY: Somehow, Mat Barzal was called for interference at 1:25 of the 3rd…

And Rittich did this to Alex DeBrincat…

GOAL: However, Dylan Larkin managed to jam home an Emmitt Finnie pass that squeaked through David Rittich’s arm to give the Wings a PPG at 3:08 of the 3rd period.

Islanders 5, Detroit 1: Larkin (6) from Finnie (4) and DeBrincat (7) at 3:11 3rd, PPG.

GOAL: In an ugly turn of events, once again, the Red Wings got themselves caught skating on the wrong side of the ice, with both Moritz Seider and Ben Chiarot charging toward the right side of the ice as Emil Heineman skated up the left circle side and ripped a one-timer through Cam Talbot to make it 6-1.

Islanders 6, Detroit 1: Heineman (5) from Horvat (4) and Pulock (4) at 7:19 3rd period.

GOAL: Worse, Simon Edvinsson got walked around by Anders Lee, he shot the puck off Cam Talbot’s toe, Talbot booted the rebound back into the slot, and Simon Holmstrom chipped the puck into the net with FOUR Red Wings standing near him.

Islanders 7, Detroit 1: Holmstrom (1) from Lee (5) and Mayfield (5) at 7:57 3rd period.

PENALTY: MacLean was called for high-sticking Albert Johansson at 8:30 of the 3rd.

Brandsegg-Nygard and Kasper and Berggren and Compher and ASP all did a nice job on the 2nd PP unit, but they could not score on Rittich, despite a dominant 1:30 shift.

The Red Wings did play some better shifts in the 3rd, with Kasper showing an edge, Finnie never giving up, Larkin grinding it out, and the Chiarot-Seider pairing getting help from the 2nd and 3rd D pairs…

GOAL: At 17:20, Jontatan Berggren and J.T. Compher raced up on a 2-on-1 away from Casey Cizikas, who plain old fell down at the Red Wings’ blueline, and Compher sent a lovely pass to Berggren, who jammed a shot through Rittich.
