Red Wings waive Svechnikov (per Bultman), 9 other players

The Detroit Red Wings have made their waiver wire decisions, and they’ve waived the following players ahead of tomorrow’s 5 PM deadline to submit the team’s 23-man roster and “taxi squad” team:

Among Detroit players on waivers: Boyle, Pickard, Tugeron, McIlrath, Lashoff, Hicketts, Elson, Criscuolo, Barber… and Svechnikov— Max Bultman (@m_bultman) January 11, 2021

No surprise on Svechnikov. He’s been injured far too regularly to be picked up, especially given today’s wave of waiver wire picks.

A reminder that while some/most of the players getting waived today are likely to be assigned to taxi/AHL tomorrow if they clear, they don’t have to be. Some will likely stay on the active NHL roster. Would need to clear again after 10 games & 30 days on NHL roster.— PuckPedia (@PuckPedia) January 11, 2021

#RedWings have placed several, including Evgeny Svechnikov on waivers today. If he clears at noon tomorrow he can be assigned to the taxi squad or @griffinshockey The list also includes Turgeon, Barber, Hicketts, Lashoff, McIlrath, Elson, Criscuolo, Pickard and Boyle.— Ansar Khan (@AnsarKhanMLive) January 11, 2021

Svechnikov (on ice today) most notable #RedWings on waivers today…does someone claim him before noon tomorrow? Don’t think so, personal opinion— Ted Kulfan (@tkulfan) January 11, 2021

Update: Here’s Khan in article form:

The Detroit Red Wings placed several players on waivers Monday, including Evgeny Svechnikov, their top pick in 2015 (19th overall), who has battled injuries and inconsistency during his career.

Svechnikov returned to practice Monday after suffering what appeared to be an arm injury in the first scrimmage last Tuesday.

Players have until noon Tuesday to clear. They can then be assigned to the taxi squad (four to six players) or to AHL Grand Rapids, which is planning to start its season in early February.

Update #2: Here’s a bit from 97.1 the Ticket:

It just hasn’t clicked in Detroit for the former 19th overall pick. He saw glimpses of the NHL over the last several seasons, including a career-high 14 games in 2017-18, but failed to claim a consistent spot in the lineup. He also missed the 2018-19 season due to a torn ACL.

In 51 games last season for the Griffins, Svechnikov scored 11 goals and 25 points. He scored zero points in four games with the Wings.

Svechnikov was unlikely to start this season in Detroit after suffering an apparent arm injury in training camp. He returned to the ice on Monday, only to be waived a couple hours later.

Here’s the Free Press’s Helene St. James:

Svechnikov, 24, has endured a number of setbacks in recent years. He practiced Monday for the first time since leaving the Jan. 5 scrimmage with an apparent injury to his right arm.

In September 2018, he suffered a knee injury that ended up sidelining him the entire season. He appeared in just four games with the Wings last season, producing no points, and otherwise spent the season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, where he had 11 goals and 14 assists in 51 games.

If Svechnikov clears waivers, he can be assigned to the Griffins — or to the Wings’ taxi squad.

  1. Surprise, NOT!!

Svech with a brittle body, I hope he is getting some education/training in another field.

Then there is the younger Svech with Carolina, budding star or already a star. They are so different.

Feel for the guy but he has to look at his future that will not be Hockey.
