Sebastian Cossa, Donovan Sebrango named to Canadian WJC Selection Camp roster

Red Wings prospect and Edmonton Oil Kings goaltender Sebastian Cossa was named to Hockey Canada’s World Junior Selection Camp roster this morning. Cossa is one of three goalies on the roster, so he’s a lock; Donovan Sebrango, a Grand Rapids Griffins defenseman, is a dark horse candidate to make the team.

Tweet of note: Red Wings revive an old tune to celebrate 3,000 wins

The Red Wings posted a Tweet this morning celebrating their 3,000th win last night vs. Boston with a clip of, “Red Wings, My Red Wings” from the early 80’s:

Dear Gord, this is so 80’s…

Press release: Red Wings, Labatt Blue Light Foundation team up to help restore hockey rinks

From the Red Wings comes this press release:

Labatt Blue Light and Detroit Red Wings Foundation Team Up to Invest in Hockey Rinks Across Michigan
“Pass-It-Forward” Promotion Allows Fans to Re-Direct Labatt Blue Light Beer Rebates Toward Restoration of Rinks   .

DETROIT – Labatt Blue Light has teamed up with the Detroit Red Wings Foundation to “Pass-It-Forward” and invest to improve community ice rinks across the state of Michigan. During the month of December, fans who purchase a Labatt 24-pack will have the option to receive an $8 rebate from Labatt USA, or they can choose to forego it, and Labatt USA will redirect the rebate to the Detroit Red Wings Foundation. Labatt USA and the Detroit Red Wings will also make separate donations to the Detroit Red Wings Foundation. With the rebates and corporate donations, up to $30,000 in funds will be available to restore ice rinks for local communities and recreational hockey players.

“Throughout Michigan, Labatt Blue Light and hockey go hand-in-hand,” said Scott Suppes, Labatt trade marketing manager. “With such a loyal base of Labatt drinkers and hockey fans across the state, this program allows Labatt to support the communities that drink our beer. Partnering with the Detroit Red Wings Foundation, we look forward to restoring rinks for hockey players and Michigan residents to enjoy.”

“Joining forces on this new Pass-It-Forward promotion provides an exciting opportunity to help rinks throughout Michigan gain access to vital improvement funds,” said Kevin Brown, director of community impact for the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers “Together with Labatt Blue Light and generous Red Wings fans, we’ll continue to grow the legacy of Hockeytown in cities and towns across our great state.”

According to Arrowhead Promotions, an industry leader in promotions working with Labatt Blue Light on this initiative, localizing donations through rebates is a unique endeavor.

“Arrowhead Promotion administers thousands of promotions each year for our clients, and rarely do we see marketing efforts designed to not only promote their brand but also to demonstrate their commitment to make the world a better place,” said Bud Schneider, Arrowhead Promotion & Fulfillment President. “Arrowhead Promotion and Fulfillment Co is proud to partner with Labatt Blue Light on this Pass-it-Forward promotion.”

The Detroit Red Wings Foundation will provide an opportunity for ice rinks in Michigan to apply for improvement grants from the Pass-It-Forward promotion in early 2022. Details regarding eligibility and the application process will be released after the retail promotion has concluded.

Prospect news: Gustav Berglund loaned to Farjestads BK

According to Expressen’s Hugo Hogland, HockeySverige.se’s Rasmus Kagstrom and Hockeynews.se’s Alexander Nilsson, Red Wings prospect Gustav Berglund has received a promotion.

His Swedish Allsvenskan club, Mora IK, has loaned Berglund, a 6’2,” 201-pound right-shooting defenseman, to Farjestads BK.

In Farjestad, the 20-year-old Berglund will be united with fellow Wings prospect and fellow defenseman Albert Johansson.

Berglund was a 2019 draft pick, as was Johansson, and Berglund needs to have a step-forward season with Farjestad to earn the same kind of entry-level contract that Johansson has already received.

Khan in the morning: Win over Bruins shows incremental progress

MLive’s Ansar Khan filed a morning column regarding the Red Wings’ 2-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night, discussing the substance of the Wings’ 3,00th franchise win:

“It wasn’t pretty, but it was the kind of win we needed,” Dylan Larkin said. “It feels great to grind one out and get a greasy win here.”

The Red Wings (11-9-3) equaled a season-high three-game winning streak. The Bruins fell to 11-8-0.

Alex Nedeljkovic made 41 saves, allowing only David Pastrnak’s goal at 6:20 of the third period during a five-on-three power play. But Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill lauded the strong defensive effort in front of him.

“We gave up shots, but we didn’t give up a whole bunch of chances,” Blashill said. “When we did, he did a good job.

“I thought we protected the back post pretty well. I thought we took away the real Grade A chances. For me this would be more of a team defense success than just one player. Certainly, Alex did a good job. The game against St. Louis (4-2 win last Wednesday), he stole us a game. That wasn’t the case tonight. I thought we played very good defensively, much better than we have.”

ESPN’s Power Rankings discuss players who should step up (like Nick Leddy)

ESPN’s Kristen Shilton posted a set of power rankings this morning, focusing on the player(s) on each NHL team’s roster who need to step forward, and she’s correct in noting that there’s a Wing who has yet to step up on a consistent basis who plays on defense:

24. Detroit Red Wings

Previous ranking: 24
Points percentage: 0.543
Upcoming schedule: vs. SEA (Dec. 1), vs. NYI (Dec. 4), vs. NSH (Dec. 7)

Nick Leddy. The Red Wings have leaned on their young guns, but veterans like Leddy can pitch in more. The 12th-year blueliner hasn’t always asserted himself this season, and it has shown in his seven assists and minus-seven rating through 22 games. And his overall possession numbers (currently on the wrong side of 50%) could be improved, as well. With a few adjustments, Leddy can be a stabilizing force on Detroit’s back end.

Continued; I’ve been okay with Leddy’s overall play, as he’s skating alongside a risk-taker in Filip Hronek, but Leddy started very strongly and got worse, to the point that he’s really struggling right now. It’s just time for #2 to start turning things around.

Red Wings-Kraken mini preview: Seattle’s won 2 straight, 4 of 5 going into first match-up with Detroit

The Detroit Red Wings now stand at 11-9-and-3 after their 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday, and the Wings turn right around and battle the 8-13-and-1 Seattle Kraken (7:30 PM Wednesday on Bally Sports Detroit/ROOT Sports Northwest/97.1 FM)…

And the Kraken’s record belies the fact that they’ve won 2 straight and 4 of their past 5 games. Seattle just wrapped up a stretch of 3 games in 4 nights, including their 7-4 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Monday, so the team didn’t practice on Tuesday.

As such, our brief game preview will look back at Seattle’s win over Buffalo as our, “Getting to know the Kraken” narrative.

We begin with NHL.com’s Heather Engel’s recap of Monday’s Kraken win

Red Wings-Bruins wrap-up: In the year 3,000…ugly wins still count

The Detroit Red Wings’ 2-1 victory over the Boston Bruins was as improbable as it was real–a win in which the Red Wing were out-shot 42-16, out-attempted 67-37, and out-chanced by a similarly lop-sided margin…

But it was a win in which Alex Nedeljkovic was not the only star. Filip Zadina scored a rare goal, Marc Staal scored a rarer goal in a fine performance, and the Red Wings first nursed and then slowly but surely took control of a game in which the Boston Bruins dictated the offense, but not necessarily the flow thereof (or the lack of flow).

The Wings will take their 3rd straight victory with them as they head home to Detroit to battle the Seattle Kraken on Thursday at Little Caesars Arena (7:30 PM EST start on Bally Sports Detroit/ROOT Northwest/97.1 FM), and that game’s not going to be easy: Seattle sits at 8-13-and-1, but they’ve won 4 of their past 5 games, so they’re coming on (and lying in wait for the Wings at LCA).

Now our friends from Boston were justifiably annoyed to be without the services of Brad Marchand (suspension) and coach Bruce Cassidy (COVID protocol), which were sizeable absences, but Taylor Hall told NESN’s Sean T. McGuire that the B’s tried to roll with the punches
