Red Wings-Flyers Tweetcap: Detroit wins in a 6-3 romp over Philadelphia

The Red Wings needed to win Thursday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers to continue their incredibly unlikely but possible playoff chase.

So, on Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena, the Red Wings got the job done, and did so in emphatic fashion, winning 6-3 over the Flyers.

Dylan Larkin scored a hat trick and had 4 points; Moritz Seider had 1 goal and 4 assists for 5 points; Patrick Kane had a goal and 2 assists for 3 points; John Gibson got the win by stopping 13 of 15 despite leaving after the 2nd period with an undisclosed injury, and Cam Talbot stopped 10 of 11 in relief.

1ST PERIOD:

The teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

PENALTY: Matvei Michkov took a penalty for punching David Perron after Perron elbowed Michkov at 2:07.

GOAL: After Dan Vladar flashed the leather on DeBrincat’s forehand shot off the first power play flourish, the second power play faceoff went to the point, Moritz Seider fed Lucas Raymond at the left wing dot, and DeBrincat backhanded the puck into the top shelf at 2:26 to give Detroit a 1-0 PPG.

PENALTY: Justin Faulk took an interference penalty at 2:45 of the 1st.

PENALTY: Tyson Foerster took a penalty for holding the stick at 9:57 of the 1st period.

GOAL: After the Flyers killed the Red Wings penalty, the Flyers cycled the puck back to Porter Martone on the point, he blasted a shot toward the net that went off both Andrew Copp’s foot and Christian Dvorak’s stick, and the game was tied 1-1 at 13:24.

PENALTY: With 1:34 left in the 1st period, Ben Chiarot headlocked Owen Tippett in the corner of the Wings’ right wing boards. So he sat at 18:27.

2ND PERIOD:

PENALTY: Owen Tippett was called for goaltender interference after running John Gibson on accident, butt first…

GOAL: And Moritz Seider blasted a pass from Patrick Kane through a partial Dylan Larkin screen and through Vladar to make it 2-1 Detroit at 32 seconds of the 2nd.

GOAL: Then Patrick Kane fed the puck down low to Dylan Larkin at the right side of the net, Larkin spun and fired a shot top shelf over Dan Vladar’s blocker at 1:50 of the 2nd period.

PENALTY: At 2:43, Seider grabbed Porter Martone in the Wings’ left half boards, Martone fell and that’s a holding minor.

PENALTY: At 4:15, Justin Faulk gave the Flyers a short 5-on-3 by tripping Owen Tippett.

GOAL: Off a fine block from Albert Johansson, Dylan Larkin blazed away on a 3-on-1 shorthanded, Larkin avoided Tyson Foerster’s backcheck and scored off Vladar’s blocker to make it 4-1 Detroit, shorthanded.

GOALIE CHANGE: Samuel Ersson took over for Dan Vladar after the Larkin goal.

PENALTY: Justin Faulk was called for “hooking” at 8:58 of the 2nd period on an incredibly weak slash across the hands.

GOAL: Off a missed coverage by Moritz Seider, Porter Martone literally stepped off the goalpost and took a lateral pass from Trevor Zegras and jammed home the puck before Gibson or Seider could get it.

GOALIE CHANGE: Cam Talbot came into the game at 10:40 of the 2nd as John Gibson left for unknown reasons.

3RD PERIOD:

GOAL: Off a Simon Edvinsson pinch up the left wing side, Andrew Copp chipped the puck back to Moritz Seider center point, he found Edvinsson down low on the left wing side, and Edvinsson fed Patrick Kane back-door to make it 5-2 at 7:01 of the 3rd.

PENALTIES: Trevor Zegras (elbowing) and Albert Johansson (roughing) sat at 10:20 of the 3rd period. 4 on 4.

GOAL: Dylan Larkin and Moritz Seider blazed in 2-on-2 on the 4-on-4, Seider fed Larkin and he kicked and shot a blast over Ersson’s glove to make it 6-2, giving Larkin 5 points and a hat trick on the night.

Detroit 6, Philadelphia 2: Larkin (34), hat trick goal, from Seider (50) and Raymond (50) at 11:39 of the 3rd period.

PENALTY: At 13:15 of the 3rd period, Simon Edvinsson high-sticked Emil Andrae and sat for 2:00.

GOAL: The Flyers’ Denver Barkey got behind the Red Wings’ defensive pair of Albert Johansson and Jacob Bernard-Docker, as did Luke Glendening, and the former Red Wing backhanded a high shot over Cam Talbot to make it 6-3 at 18:09 of the 3rd.
