Red Wings-Stars Tweetcap: Detroit rallies in the 3rd period but falls in OT to the scintillating Stars

The Red Wings faced a particularly stiff task on Saturday night, heading into Dallas to face a Stars team that boasted a 13-0-and-1 record over their past 14 games…

And Detroit hasn’t won at the American Airlines Center in a very long time. Dallas entered tonight’s game with a 15-game point streak against Detroit (with the Wings’ last win coming in Dallas in 2016).

Given the Wings’ injuries, the match-up felt like “David vs. Goliath on ice.”

On Saturday evening in Dallas, the Red Wings were pancake flat for the first two periods, surrendering a 2-0 lead while Dallas out-shot Detroit 17-8, but in the 3rd period, Detroit out-shot Dallas 14-6 and got goals from Simon Edvinsson and Lucas Raymond (both at even strength), and forced overtime…

Where Thomas Harley broke in vs. Simon Edvinsson and a valiant John Gibson, and Harley fired a perfect shot over Gibson’s blocker to give Dallas yet another two-point, OT win.

This one felt like a gut punch after the Wings battled back so expertly in the 3rd period.

PREGAME: John Gibson and Jake Oettinger led their respective teams out onto the ice…

The Red Wings announced a bit of a roster boost given that Larkin, Copp, Rasmussen and Brandsegg-Nygard are all out with injuries right now…

The Stars don’t post their full lineup, so DLLS Stars’ Sam Nestler will provide the Stars’ lines…

Dallas posted it starting lineup…

And the Wings revealed that David Perron would play on Detroit’s 2nd line to start, with Emmitt Finnie sliding into Michael Rasmussen’s spot on the 3rd line:

1ST PERIOD:

The teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

PENALTIES: David Perron headlocked Miro Heiskanen and the duo took penalties. Perron went for slashing and Heiskanen for roughing at 3:34 of the 1st period.

GOAL: Off a strange board battle, Wyatt Johnston spun off Lucas Raymond, went to the net, and the puck somehow fluttered over John Gibson’s blocker to make it 1-0 at 8:57 of the 1st period.

Dallas 1, Detroit 0: Johnston (36) from Bourque (18) and Lundkvist (6) at 8:57 1st.

PENALTY: Dominik Shine slashed a Star at the Wings’ blueline at 10:33 and sat for the slash.

2ND PERIOD:

PENALTY: Colin Blackwell took a little tumble off a little tug and Moritz Seider sat for hooking at 25 seconds of the 2nd period.

GOAL: Michael Bunting scored a weird goal as Jason Robertson skated into the slot 3-on-2, passed the puck to Justin Hryckowian, and when the puck was reversed, it rolled off a Red Wings player’s skate and right to Bunting, who swept the puck in past Gibson at 2:19.

Dallas 2, Detroit 0: Bunting (14) from Hryckowian (13) and Robertson (43) at 2:19 of the 2nd period.

PENALTY: Nathan Bastian sat for interference at 2:30 of the 2nd period.

PENALTY: J.T. Compher took a dumb slashing minor at 10:48 of the 2nd period.

PENALTY: Lucas Raymond was called for “hooking” at 12:31 of the 2nd period, giving Dallas 19 seconds of a 5-on-3.

3RD PERIOD:

PENALTY: Esa Lindell got tagged for interference at 33 seconds of the 3rd because Compher went down easy.

PENALTIES: Justin Faulk, sans stick, grabbed Jason Robertson, and for some reason, both were called for penalties at 3:35 of the 3rd period. Faulk sat for holding, Robertson for cross-checking.

GOAL: On a solid offensive rush, Moritz Seider laterally passed the puck to a pinching Simon Edvinsson, he shot on Oettinger, Oettinger juggled the puck and put it between his own legs with his glove, making it 2-1.

Dallas 2, Detroit 1: Edvinsson (9) from Seider (38) and van Riemsdyk (13) at 6:51 3rd period.

PENALTY: Marco Kasper was cross-checked from behind by Tyler Myers at 7:44 of the 3rd period.

GOAL: John Gibson made a fine stop, the Red Wings broke out 4 on 3, DeBrincat fed Finnie blazing through center ice, he went to the right side of the net and tapped the puck over to Lucas Raymond in the slot. Raymond blubbed the puck, tipped it down and followed it toward the empty net, scoring to tie the game 2-2!

Dallas 2, Detroit 2: Raymond (21) from Finnie (14) and DeBrincat (33) at 16:34 3rd period.

IN OVERTIME…

GOAL: Detroit over-committed to regaining the rebound from a shot by Marco Kasper, and Wyatt Johnston sent a tremendous pass up to a pinching Thomas Harley, he raced in right wing vs. Simon Edvinsson and Gibson, and Harley fired a perfect shot over Gibson’s blocker to win the game.

Dallas 3, Detroit 2: Harley (6) from Johnston (37) at 2:05 of overtime.
