Red Wings-Panthers Tweetcap: Detroit’s ‘ratted out’ as Florida pushes past Detroit late, sweeps home-and-home series

The Detroit Red Wings haven’t established a solid record against the Florida Panthers of late. But the NHL standings remain incredibly tight, so Detroit headed into a set of Sunshine State games (Detroit plays in Tampa Bay on Thursday) with a must-win battle against the Panthers on Tuesday evening.

At Amerant Bank Arena, the Red Wings held a 3-2 lead going into the final couple of minutes of the 3rd period, but a pair of Carter Verhaeghe goals at 18:30 and 19:45 afforded Florida a tie and then a 4-3 victory over the Red Wings, who got some bad bounces, lost Andrew Copp’s services in the 2nd period, and will be incredibly PISSED OFF about a terrible, terrible collapse.

PREGAME: John Gibson and Danil Tarasov led their respective teams out onto the ice…

FloridaPanthers.com’s Jameson Olive posted the Panthers’ lines…

Because the Panthers only post their starters…

And the Wings posted their lineup ten minutes before puck-drop:

1ST PERIOD:

The teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

GOAL: Vinnie Hinostroza got a tip-in goal in his return to Florida’s roster at 9:48 of the 1st period, with Gustav Forsling setting up a breakout and Jesper Boqvist sending a slick pass up from the right wing half boards.

Florida 1, Detroit 0: Hinostroza (4) from Boqvist (6) and Forsling (20) at 9:48 1st.

PENALTY: Matthew Tkachuk hacked the hell out of Ben Chiarot at 13:30 of the 1st period, and sat after Chiarot did a fly-by to express his disgust.

Detroit did not score on the power play. It had one “good look” as Alex DeBrincat nearly tapped a Lucas Raymond pass in behind Tarasov, but the Panthers’ goalie’s toe snuck out.

2ND PERIOD:

GOAL: As Detroit dominated the early going in the 2nd period, Andrew Copp and Alex DeBrincat regrouped at center ice, DeBrincat buttonhooked at the Panthers’ blueline, he passed to Mo Seider, who blasted a shot at the net, and Patrick Kane jabbed the rebound home.

Florida 1, Detroit 1: Kane (10) from Seider (37) and DeBrincat (31) at 3:54 2nd period.

PENALTY: Andrew Copp tripped Mikkola at 4:09 of the 2nd period.

Florida was unable to score on their power play, because…

PENALTY: Sam Bennett took a penalty for hooking Michael Rasmussen who was in on a shorthanded breakaway at 5:07, yielding 1:01 of a 4-on-4 and 59 seconds of PP time.

Detroit was unable to score on their power play.

PENALTY: Simon Edvinsson couldn’t deal with a rolling puck on Panthers ice, so Mackie Samoskevich took the puck away from Edvinsson at the left wing half boards, and Edvinsson tripped up Samoskevich at 10:45 of the 2nd period, with #77 sitting for the trip.

Florida did not score on their power play.

GOAL: An Andrew Copp faceoff win bounced off a Panther to the left wing half boards, where Justin Faulk raced in, ripped a backhander and it eluded Tarasov to make it 2-1 Detroit at 12:59.

>

Florida 1, Detroit 2: Faulk (12) from Copp (29) at 12:59 2nd period.

INJURY: Tomas Nosek fell on Andrew Copp’s calf, and Copp had to leave the ice with Piet Van Zant’s help, not putting any weight on his left leg at 12:59 of the 2nd period.

INJURY: Michael Brandsegg-Nygard left the Wings’ bench, according to Ken Daniels, sometime around 16:00 into the 2nd period.

PENALTY: Alex DeBrincat barely tapped the stick out of Matthew Tkachuk’s hands at 18:18 and DeBrincat sat for a soft slash.

3RD PERIOD:

Return and an injury update: Michael Brandsegg-Nygard returned to the Wings’ bench to start the 3rd period, but Andrew Copp did not:

As such…

GOAL: Off a weird play in which Justin Faulk lost his stick, and Lucas Raymond had to give Faulk #23’s blade, Florida worked the puck back to Mikkola on defense, and he ripped a shot through a Jesper Boqvist/Justin Faulk screen to make it 2-2 at 5:09 of the 3rd period.

Florida 2, Detroit 2: Mikkola (3) from Hinostroza (8) at 5:09 3rd period.

GOAL: 1:22 later, Marco Kasper took an Emmitt Finnie pass off a fine Justin Faulk break-out pass and Kasper broke in behind the Panthers’ defense to score the 3-2 marker at 6:32.

Florida 2, Detroit 3: Kasper (7) from Finnie (13) and Faulk (22) at 6:32 of the 3rd.

GOALIE PULL: Tarasov headed to the bench with 2:05 left in the 3rd…

GOAL: Simon Edvinsson was unable to clear the puck and Florida’s Mikkola blasted a shot toward the net. Matthew Tkachuk dug the puck off a Wings defenseman’s shin pad and backhanded the puck to Carter Verhaeghe, who scored on a screen shot at 18:30.

Florida 3, Detroit 3: Verhaeghe (18) from Tkachuk (10) at 18:30 3rd period, 6-on-5 goal.

GOAL: Florida caught Detroit on a horrific change with 14.1 seconds left in the 3rd period, and it cost Detroit the game. With Moritz Seider tied up by Bennett, Tkachuk fed Verhaeghe in the slot, and he ripped a shot through Gibson off Faulk’s skate and it was 4-3.

Florida 4, Detroit 3: Verhaeghe (19) from Tkachuk (11) and Bennett (26) at 19:45 of the 3rd.

GOALIE PULL: With 15 seconds left, Detroit pulled Gibson. It did not pay off.
