Red Wings-Devils Tweetcap: Detroit loses Gibson but Shine bright in New Jersey

The Detroit Red Wings attempted to snap a 1-1-and-1 streak against a back-to-back-game-playing New Jersey Devils team on Sunday night in Newark, New Jersey.

At the Prudential Center, the Red Wings slowly but surely woke up in the 1st period, scored a rare even-strength goal off a “Larry Murphy” snap shot from Moritz Seider (1G, 2A), John Gibson stopped 21 shots, and all was well with the Wings (JvR scored a PPG at 6:37 of the 2nd) as the 2nd period wore down…

But Timo Meier shoveled Lucas Raymond into John Gibson at 19:55 of the 2nd, and Gibson tried to shake off the cobwebs, but didn’t return for the 3rd…

Thankfully, Dominik Shine scored his first NHL goal 10:24 in the 3rd, and Cam Talbot stepped up in stopping 9 shots to give the Wings a 3-0 win, crucial for Detroit’s Eastern Conference standings situation as the 4-game road trip begins.

PREGAME: John Gibson and Jacob Markstrom led their respective teams out onto the ice…

The Devils relied on Amanda Stein’s impeccable penmanship to post their lineup…

And here are the Red Wings’ lines:

1ST PERIOD:

The teams iced the following starters and lineups:

GOAL: After methodically moving the puck up the ice, the Kane line cycled around the back boards, Andrew Copp passed the puck to Patrick Kane on the half boards, Copp headed to the net, Kane fed Moritz Seider at the point and Seider wristed a high snapper over Jacob Markstrom’s shoulder to make it 1-0 at 3:20 of the 1st.

Detroit 1, New Jersey 0: Seider (8) from Kane (26) and Copp (28) at 3:20 1st.

PENALTY: Luke Hughes headed to the penalty box at 4:43 of the 1st.

Detroit did not score on the PP as the Devils dominated with shorthanded chances, accumulating a 6-2 shot lead.

PENALTY: Andrew Copp sat for slashing at 11:20 of the 1st period.

PENALTY: New Jersey got tagged for too many men on the ice at 12:39 of the 1st period. Arseny Gritsyuk served the penalty.

Also:

END OF PERIOD.

2ND PERIOD:

PENALTY: Andrew Copp was called for high-sticking at 29 seconds of the 2nd period.

Detroit killed the penalty.

PENALTY: John Kovacevic was called for interference at 5:43 of the 2nd period.

GOAL: The Red Wings did a very good job of cycling and grinding it out behind the Devils’ net, Patrick Kane chugged the puck back to the line and Moritz Seider’s high wrister was tipped down by James van Riemsdyk to make it 2-0 at 6:37 of the 2nd period.

Detroit 2, New Jersey 0: van Riemsdyk (15) from Seider (35) and Kane (27) at 6:37 2nd period, PPG.

PENALTY: Brenden Dillon laid out Andrew Copp with a fine hit that was illegal because it interfered with Copp at 13:35 of the 2nd period, yielding an interference minor.

Detroit did not score on the PP, but Justin Faulk got a great chance on a mini-breakaway that Markstrom snapped out of the air with his glove.

PENALTIES: John Gibson was hurt after Timo Meier tossed Lucas Raymond into the Red Wings’ goaltender at 19:55 of the 2nd period, and Gibson was shaken up, so the teams both met in the corner and both Ben Chiarot and Timo Meier were tagged for interference at 19:55 of the 2nd period.

Gibson appeared to shake off the hit…But he did not return for the 3rd period.

3RD PERIOD:

GOALIE CHANGE: Gibson was replaced by Cam Talbot for the 3rd period.

Oh yeah, by the way:

GOAL: Off a lovely cycling attempt by Moritz Seider and James van Riemsdyk’s centering pass through the crease, Dominik Shine scored his first NHL goal at 10:23 of the 3rd period, making it 3-0.

Detroit 3, New Jersey 0: Shine (1) from van Riemsdyk (12) and Seider (36) at 10:23 3rd period.

PENALTY: Simon Nemec took a tripping call on Michael Brandsegg-Nygard at 15:45 of the 3rd period.
