Red Wings-Hurricanes Tweetcap: Detroit loses 5-2 to Carolina, drops 6th straight in Raleigh

With the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference standings clustered tightly, the Red Wings headed into Carolina against a streaking Hurricanes team, needing to earn points by any means necessary.

Despite having won a solid victory over Ottawa on Thursday, the Wings play on an every-other-day basis until March 16th, so the stretch drive grind is really here.

On Saturday night in Raleigh, the Red Wings’ mistake-prone hockey afforded the Hurricanes their 6th straight win against Detroit at the Lenovo Center, with the sloppy Wings losing by a 5-3 tally.

The nearby-in-the-standings Sabres, Senators, Canadiens and Islanders all won, too, diminishing Detroit’s margin for error as the Wings head into Nashville for a 2 PM EDT start on Monday.

PREGAME: Cam Talbot and Fredrik Andersen led their respective teams out onto the ice at the Lenovo Center:

The Canes posted their lineup at 6:55 PM, minus their starters…

And the Red Wings posted their lineup a few minutes later…

1ST PERIOD:

The teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

GOAL: Simon Edvinsson made a bad decision to lackadaisically shoot the puck toward the goal as the “last man back” on the blueline, and Taylor Hall swiped the puck, broke in on a breakaway, and scored to make it 1-0 Carolina.

Carolina 1, Detroit 0: Hall (14) unassisted at 14:05 of the 1st period, breakaway goal.

PENALTY: With 40.9 seconds remaining in the 1st period, Albert Johansson was tagged with a tripping penalty for tugging at Gostisbehere.

GOAL: Shayne Gostisbehere sent a sneaky shot through the Wings’ defense, and Sebastian Aho tipped the puck off Simon Edvinsson’s stick, giving the Hurricanes a PPG and a 2-0 lead with only 8 seconds left in the 1st.

Carolina 2, Detroit 0: Aho (22) from Gostisbehere (30) and Jarvis (20) at 19:52 1st, PPG.

2ND PERIOD:

GOAL: Albert Johansson made a bad turnover at center ice, the Canes’ Scott Walker worked the puck up ice to William Carrier, and he fed Eric Robinson in the crease. Robinson jammed the puck through Talbot with Johansson and Axel Sandin-Pellikka watching at 2:52 of the 2nd period.

Carolina 3, Detroit 0: Robinson (11) from Carrier (7) and Walker (11) at 2:52 2nd period.

PENALTIES: Off a scrum behind the Canes’ net, Ben Chiarot and Andrei Svechnikov sat for roughing at 17:07 of the 2nd, yielding a 4-on-4.

GOAL: Dylan Larkin regrouped in the neutral zone, pushed the puck into the offensive zone, and sent a pass to Alex DeBrincat on the right wing. As Larkin drove the net, Edvinsson took a lateral pass from DeBrincat, and Simon roofed the puck over Andersen to make it 3-1.

Carolina 3, Detroit 1: Edvinsson (7) from DeBrincat (28) and Larkin (26) at 18:26 2nd period.

GOAL: Then J.T. Compher fed Moritz Seider for a shot that Seider was unable to score on, but Seider took the rebound, cycled up top and gave the puck to Patrick Kane, who fired a flickering shot through Andersen’s short side to make it 3-2 at 19:13.

Carolina 3, Detroit 2: Kane (9) from Seider (33) and Compher (12) at 19:13 2nd period.

3RD PERIOD:

GOAL: Off a cycle in which Taylor Hall and Jackson Blake hemmed in the Compher line for a significant chunk of time, Blake found Gostisbehere in the slot, and Gostisbehere roofed the puck over Cam Talbot to make it 4-2 at 2:18 of the 3rd.

Carolina 4, Detroit 2: Gostisbehere (10) from Blake (19) and Hall (17) at 2:18 3rd period.

GOAL: Jackson Blake took a pass from his own blueline and skated up the right side, Moritz Seider had pinched poorly, and Simon Edvinsson had to take the pass…So Blake fired a shot through Talbot to make it 5-2.

Carolina 5, Detroit 2: Blake (17) from Hall (18) and Gostisbehere (31) at 5:30 3rd.

PENALTY: Emmitt Finnie drew the Wings’ first power play of the game at 6:42 of the 3rd, via a Sean Walker trip.

PENALTY: And Dylan Larkin tripped Jordan Martinook at 7:07 of the 3rd, negating the power play.

PENALTY: Simon Edvinsson sat for 4:00 for high-sticking a tooth out of Taylor Hall’s mouth at 15:09 of the 3rd period.
