Red Wings-Jets Tweetcap: Detroit gives Winnipeg a cold shoulder, winning 5-1

The Detroit Red Wings attempted to earn 2 out of 3 wins on their Midwestern road trip as they faced the Jets in frigid Winnipeg on Saturday night. It’s always difficult to play a struggling powerhouse–if you underestimate them, you’re cooked.

Worse for the Wings, Simon Edvinsson would miss tonight’s game with a lower-body ailment which requires more examination in Detroit. Winnipeg headed into tonight’s game at 5-1-and-2 over their past 8 games as well, so Detroit faced an uphill battle in Friendly Manitoba.

On Saturday night at the Canada Life Centre, the battle was indeed uphill, and the final score–a 5-1 victory for the Red Wings–did not reflect how incredibly close the game was for approximately 40 minutes’ worth of hockey.

Winnipeg actually opened the scoring at 10:08 of the 2nd as Connor Koepke beat Moritz Seider to the puck off a lost faceoff, but by the 15:50 mark of the 2nd, J.T. Compher would race up the right wing and stuff home the 1-1 goal…

And, well, you’ve got to read the rest of this one to find out what else happened. Needless to say, Compher’s 2 goals and John Gibson’s 25-save performance loomed large for the Wings here!

PREGAME: John Gibson and Connor Hellebuyck led their respective teams out onto the ice…

Winnipeg posted its Gustav Nyquist-less lineup after their morning skate…

And the Red Wings posted their lineup just prior to puck drop:

1ST PERIOD:

The teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

PENALTY: Morgan Barron sat at 14:10 for tripping J.T. Compher.

The PP wouldn’t deliver for the Wings, but Seider did a great job of steering Adam Lowry’s 2-on-1 into an easy stop for John Gibson, and Axel Sandin Pellikka looked very good working on the second unit.

2ND PERIOD:

PENALTY: At 3:04 of the 2nd period, Ben Chiarot sat for interference…On an iffy call as Morgan Barron sort of fell down.

GOAL: Off a faceoff in which J.T. Compher was waved out, Murray Barron won the draw from Emmitt Finnie back to Logan Stanley, he blasted a shot on Gibson and the rebound went to Connor Koepke, who backhanded the puck through Gibson before Seider could tie up his stick.

Winnipeg 1, Detroit 0: Koepke (4) from Stanley (9) and Barron (9) at 10:08 2nd period.

PENALTY: Mason Appleton got tripped heavily by Vladislav Namestnikov at 13:45 of the 2nd period.

GOAL: After the power play expired, Patrick Kane and Andrew Copp ground the puck out down low behind the net, they fed J.T. Compher at the front of the goal and he shoveled a puck off the goalpost and past Hellebuyck as Schenn leveled Compher.

Winnipeg 1, Detroit 1: Compher (7) from Copp (23) at 15:50 2nd period.

3RD PERIOD:

GOAL: Off a superb end-to-end rush, Emmitt Finnie carried the puck up ice, went left to James van Riemsdyk, JvR returned the favor to Finnie, Finnie fed J.T. Compher driving the left goalpost, and Compher stuffed the puck past Hellebuyck to give Detroit an early 3rd period lead.

Winnipeg 1, Detroit 2: Compher (8) from Finnie (12) and van Riemsdyk (10) at 1:43 3rd period.

PENALTY: Morgan Barron buzzed John Gibson behind the Wings’ net, tripped the Wings’ goaltender, and he sat for a trip at 5:02 of the 3rd.

GOAL: On a disputed play, Lucas Raymond would rim the puck around the goal and jam the puck into Connor Hellebuyck. The puck would bounce into the air over Hellebuyck and the crossbar, Marco Kasper would swat at the puck, but it would roll down, off the bar and behind the Jets’ goalie, affording Detroit a disputed but legal 3-1 marker.

Winnipeg 1, Detroit 3: Raymond (18) from Kasper (7) and Bernard-Docker (4) at 8:11 3rd period.

GOALIE PULL: Connor Hellebuyck headed to the Jets’ goal with 2:55 remaining.

GOAL: With Hellebuyck out, Patrick Kane sent the puck up to Andrew Copp, he chugged up the right side, missed the empty net, and fed Alex DeBrincat, who deposited the puck in the empty cage.

Winnipeg 1, Detroit 4: DeBrincat (27) from Copp (24) and Kane (22) at 18:11 3rd, ENG.

GOAL: Off a wonderful shot block by Lucas Raymond in the Red Wings’ zone, which broke Raymond’s stick, Marco Kasper blazed up the left wing, skated in 2-on-1 and ripped a shot through Connor Hellebuyck to seal the deal at 18:43 of the 3rd.

Winnipeg 1, Detroit 5: Kasper (5) from Raymond (40) at 18:43 3rd period.
