Red Wings-Senators Tweetcap: overtime magic from DeBrincat, Detroit prevails over Sens

The Detroit Red Wings and a pissed off Ottawa Senators team faced off on Sunday afternoon at Little Caesars Arena.

Ottawa was far from vulnerable playing the back half of a back-to-back slate of games, because the inconsistent Sens blew a 2-goal lead en route to an 6-5 overtime loss to Montreal on Saturday night. Ottawa aimed to avenge their January 5th loss to the Wings with James Reimer in their crease.

On Sunday evening at the Pizzarena, the Red Wings had a very rough start against the speedy Sens, who blazed out to a 2-0 lead with 2 goals scored over the course of 39 seconds (Batherson and Cozens scored), but Axel Sandin Pellikka gave the Wings a foothold with a 1st period goal only 2 minutes after the Sens went ahead 2-0…

Detroit dug deep in the 2nd, and scored 2 goals (Raymond and a gorgeous van Riemsdyk through-the-legs marker) to make it 3-2, but Shane Pinto would tie the game 3-3 with 55 seconds left in the 2nd, on the power play…

The 3rd would solve nothing, but this happened in OT:

So the Red Wings prevailed 4-3 in overtime over Ottawa, with John Gibson stopped 19 of 22 shots, and James Reimer stopping 30 of 34 in his return to NHL action. Reimer arguably got the Sens a point, but Detroit needed two, and the Wings got ’em.

PREGAME: John Gibson and James Reimer led their respective teams out onto the ice at LCA…

The Senators posted their lineup first…

And the Red Wings posted their lineup closer to puck drop:

Before the game, the Wings honored Patrick Kane’s 500th goal, too:

1ST PERIOD:

The teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

GOAL: The Senators overloaded the slot as Thomas Chabot deked through the Wings’ defense, Gibson made one stop, Gibson stopped the second shot, but Drake Batherson stuffed the Sens’ third shot past Gibson to open the scoring at 4:26 of the 1st period.

Ottawa 1, Detroit 0: Batherson (19) from Zetterlund (10) and Chabot (12) at 4:26 1st period.

PENALTY: Andrew Copp got tagged for holding at 4:47 of the 1st.

GOAL: Sanderson held the blueline, Batherson shoveled the puck toward the slot and Dylan Cozens shoveled the puck into the net at 5:05 of the 1st.

Ottawa 2, Detroit 0: Cozens (15) from Tkachuk (17) and Batherson (25) at 5:05 1st, PPG.

PENALTY: Nick Cozens hit Moritz Seider high and hard and was called for elbowing at 5:22 of the first period.

GOAL: On the power play, Patrick Kane shoveled the puck back to Axel Sandin Pellikka on the cycle, ASP ripped a wrister through an Andrew Copp screen, and Detroit got on the board at 7:16 of the 1st period.

Ottawa 2, Detroit 1: Axel Sandin Pellikka (6) from Patrick Kane (21) and Andrew Copp (21) at 7:16 1st period.

PENALTIES: Brady Tkachuk and Thomas Chabot sat for Ottawa and Elmer Soderblom and Mason Appleton sat for Detroit, all for roughing…And Ottawa was called for too many men at 8:00 as well, giving the Red Wings a power play.

PENALTY: Moritz Seider got called for tripping at 16:56. A bit of a phantom call. But, thankfully, Detroit killed the penalty.

2ND PERIOD:

GOALL: After an up-and-down second period, Lucas Raymond took a set of passes from Ben Chiarot and then Marco Kasper, Raymond deked, juked, and fired a tremendous shot through and over James Reimer to make it 2-2!

Ottawa 2, Detroit 2: Raymond (15) from Kasper (5) and Chiarot (7) at 6:06 2nd period.

INJURY: Lucas Raymond got clipped in the chin by Ridly Greig on a fly-by at 9:42, and…

PENALTY: As Raymond headed off to take his concussion test, Greig sat for interference at 9:42 of the 2nd period.

PENALTY: David Perron tripped Emmitt Finnie at 16:17 of the 2nd and was tagged for “holding” despite getting his stick into Finnie and then letting it go as Finnie fell.

GOAL: As Detroit cycled on the power play, Kane and DeBrincat won a battle down low, the puck was pumped back to Seider, he saw Alex DeBrincat, lateral pass to Dylan Larkin, shot stopped Reimer, and James van Riemsdyk ripped a rebound between his legs, top shelf to give Detroit a 3-2 lead.

Ottawa 2, Detroit 3: van Riemsdyk (13) from Larkin (20) and DeBrincat (27) at 16:53 2nd period, PPG.

PENALTY: Elmer Soderblom did something kind of stupid in clipping Ridly Greig behind the play, in the chin, and he sat for interference at 18:00 of the 2nd…

GOAL: And, of course, Shane Pinto redirected a Claude Giroux pass in with his foot, legally, to make it 3-3 at 19:05 of the 2nd.

Ottawa 3, Detroit 3: Pinto (14) from Giroux (25) and Perron (15) at 19:05 2nd, PPG.

3RD PERIOD:

RETURN: Lucas Raymond returned from his injury and played well.

PENALTY: Brady Tkachuk tripped Emmitt Finnie and sat for tripping at 49 seconds of the 3rd period.

As of halfway through the 3rd, Detroit’s PP was 2-for-5 in 8:30, Ottawa 2-for-3 in 3:23.

OVERTIME:

GOAL: The Senators nearly scored off the opening draw when Brady Tkachuk was sprung off the bench, but instead, Tim Stuetzle lost the puck to DeBrincat, he fed it to Copp, Copp went back to DeBrincat over the blueline and DeBrincat sent a massive snapper through James Reimer to score the 4-3 winner only 36 seconds into OT.

Ottawa 3, Detroit 4: DeBrincat (26) from Copp (22) at 36 seconds of overtime!
