Red Wings-Bruins Tweetcap: Detroit looked gassed while losing 3-0 to Boston

The Detroit Red Wings attempted to win in a Detroit graveyard in the Boston’s TD Garden on Tuesday, facing the Boston Bruins in a back-to-back affair.

On Tuesday evening in “Beantown,” Detroit’s gas tanks were simply empty as they played in their 10th back-to-back scenario against a rested Bruins team.

Boston would win 3-0 despite a spectacular performance from Cam Talbot, who valiantly stopped 38 of 40 shots as the Wings just couldn’t or wouldn’t get to the front of Jeremy Swayman’s crease.

The B’s goalie was good, too, stopping 24 shots, but the Wings were so exhausted mentally and physically that they just didn’t have the “oomph” to make it particularly difficult for Swayman or his teammates until late in the 3rd period, where the Wings emptied the tanks, but couldn’t narrow their deficit, and instead, the B’s would score an empty-net goal.

Perhaps the let-down was due to the excitement of the Fedorov jersey retirement game, or maybe the Wings were gassed after that rough 3rd period vs. Carolina, but in any case, the Wings lost a critical game, and they’re going to have to rebound after a 2-day break, when the Wings play San Jose on Friday and Ottawa on Sunday.

PREGAME: Cam Talbot and Jeremy Swayman led their respective teams out onto the ice…

The Bruins posted their lineup first…

And then the Red Wings chimed in:

James van Riemsdyk engaged in a pre-game interview with the TNT crew as well:

1ST PERIOD:

The teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

PENALTY: Alex DeBrincat was tripped by Elias Lindholm at the B’s blueline at 11:59 of the 1st period.

2ND PERIOD:

The B’s, of course, always take pride in their physical play…

PENALTY: Ben Chiarot got called for interfering with Mark Kastelic at 2:35 of the 2nd period. It was a strange take-down play and Chiarot was very angry at the refs for calling it when the rest of the game was so rough in general.

GOAL BOSTON: Regrettably, the Red Wings turned the puck over in their zone after a lost faceoff, Pavel Zacha took a pass from Mason Lohrei at the bottom of the faceoff circle, and Zacha rifled a shot through a partially-screened Cam Talbot at 10:59 of the 2nd period. The play started with James van Riemsdyk losing a puck battle because he was tripped, but that was ignored.

Boston 1, Detroit 0: Zacha (14) From Lohrei (15) at 10:59 2nd.

3RD PERIOD:

GOAL: At 3:49, All of Copp, Chiarot and Axel Sandin Pellikka got caught chasing the Bruins around the Red Wings’ zone, and Charlie McAvoy charged up from the blueline into the slot and backhanded a back-door pass to Fraser Minten, who was alone at the side of the goal, and Minten tapped the 2-0 goal past Talbot.

Boston 2, Detroit 0: Minten (11) from McAvoy (24) and Pastrnak (37) at 3:49 3rd.

PENALTY: Axel Sandin Pellikka sat for holding David Pastrnak, who sold the penalty, at 11:49 of the 3rd.

PENALTY: 1:11 into the B’s power play, Charlie McAvoy got tagged for holding Mason Appleton at 12:39 of the 3rd.

GOALIE PULL: The Wings pulled Cam Talbot with 4:07 left in the 3rd…

GOAL, BRUINS: And Mark Kastelic out-raced Lucas Raymond up the ice and scored the 3-0 marker at 16:01.

Boston 3, Detroit 0: Kastelic (7) from Jeannot (14) at 16:01 3rd, empty net.
