Red Wings-Hurricanes Tweetcap: Detroit wins round 2 of a heavyweight series

The Detroit Red Wings hosted the Carolina Hurricanes in a battle of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference on Monday at Little Caesars Arena. If the Wings won, they’d own the East outright heading into a Tuesday night back-to-back in Boston; if the Canes won, they’d stand atop the Eastern Conference.

On Monday night at Little Caesars Arena, the game lived up to the hype. On a night where both teams were able to earn some calls that were spurious, Andrew Copp scored the overtime winner as Detroit took a 3-0 lead, blew it in the 3rd period on 2 power play and 1 shorthanded goal by Carolina, and John Gibson was stout in stopping 31 of 34 shots as Detroit won 4-3 in overtime…

PREGAME: John Gibson and Fredrik Andersen led their respective teams out onto the ice at LCA:

The Wings wore special stickers on their skates that imitated Sergei Fedorov’s white Nike skates:

The Canes post their starters and lines…

And the Wings released their lineup just prior to puck drop:

1ST PERIOD:

The teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

PENALTY: Jaccob Slavin got tagged for tripping at 37 seconds of the 1st period.

GOAL: James van Riemsdyk scored in the final seconds of the PP, slithering the rebound of a tipped Moritz Seider shot past Fredrik Andersen at 1:32.

Detroit 1, Carolina 0: van Riemsdyk (12) from Seider (26) and Raymond (35) at 1:32 of the 1st, PPG.

NO GOAL: Logan Stankoven batted the puck into the goal with his hand, and he was furious when the refs ruled it “no goal” at 4:50 because he felt that Axel Sandin Pellikka’s stick tipped the puck home.

PENALTY: Jackson Blake sat for hooking Dylan Larkin’s hands at 10:49 of the 1st period.

PENALTY: At 14:48 of the 1st period, Moritz Seider tripped Taylor Hall and sat for said tripping minor.

2ND PERIOD:

GOAL: After a set of board battles in which Andrew Copp and Ben Chiarot did a tremendous job of cycling to the right of Fredrik Andersen, Alex DeBrincat snuck into the slot, Copp found DeBrincat and #93 rifled a shot through Fredrik Andersen to make it 2-0 at 1:28 of the 2nd period.

Detroit 2, Carolina 0: DeBrincat (24) from Copp (20) and Chiarot (6) at 1:28 of the 2nd period.

GOAL: Albert Johansson raced up the gut after Alex DeBrincat dropped the puck to Patrick Kane, and Johansson took Kane’s pass and riffled a shot through Fredrik Andersen to make it 3-0 at 4:54 of the 2nd period.

Detroit 3, Carolina 2: Johansson (1) from Kane (20) and DeBrincat (24) at 4:54 2nd period.

PENALTY: Jacob Bernard-Docker unwisely tripped Eric Robinson and sat for a tripping minor at 14:30 of the 2nd, as the Canes were dominating the Wings by cycling down low in Detroit’s zone.

3RD PERIOD:

PENALTY: Albert Johansson was called for cross-checking at 2:52 of the 3rd period. It was egregious.

GOAL: Jackson Blake slithered a sneaky shot through the Wings’ coverage through John Gibson, from the left faceoff dot, via a deflection off a Wing at 4:42 of the 3rd period, on the power play.

Detroit 3, Carolina 1: Blake (14) from Hall (14) and Nikishin (13) at 4:42 3rd, PPG.

PENALTY: K’Andre Miller sat for holding Elmer Soderblom at 6:47 of the 3rd period.

GOAL: Off a shorthanded 2-on-1, Seth Jarvis tapped in a lateral pass to make it 3-2 Detroit as the Wings gave up a shorthanded goal.

Detroit 3, Carolina 2: Jarvis (21) from Aho (27) at 7:56 3rd period, shorthanded.

PENALTY: Moritz Seider was called for…um…something…with 4:42 left in the 3rd period…Or, as it turns out, Lucas Raymond was called for a slash at 15:18. In any case, it was a weak call.

PENALTY: Ben Chiarot high-sticked Seth Jarvis accidentally at 15:48 of the 3rd. 5 on 3 for Carolina for 1:31.

GOAL: Shayne Gostisbehere top-shelfed the puck through Simon Edvinsson and over Gibson’s blocker with 3:01 left in the 3rd.

Detroit 3, Carolina 3: Gostisbehere (6) from Aho (28) at 16:59 3rd, PPG.

PENALTY: At 17:30, Taylor Hall tripped Michael Rasmussen, giving the teams 18 seconds of 4 on 4 and then 1:42 of PP time to Detroit.

OVERTIME:

GOAL: Andrew Copp tipped home and Alex DeBrincat pass very late in overtime, but he did so by cross-checking Shayne Gostisbehere, and the Canes were furious about what happened.

Detroit 4, Carolina 3: Copp (8) from DeBrincat (25) at 3:27 OT.
