Red Wings-Jets Tweetcap: a little sleepy farewell to 2025 goes Detroit’s way, 2-1 over Winnipeg

The Detroit Red Wings began a set of 3 game to be played over the course of 4 days and nights by hosting the Winnipeg Jets at Little Caesars Arena. Winnipeg’s had a rough season thus far, but the Wings didn’t want to be the team that hosted the start of a season-salvaging victory.

On Wednesday night at LCA, the Red Wings prevailed 3-1 in a real sloppy, sleepy victory over the Jets.

Winnipeg out-shot Detroit 25-19 and out-shot-attempted Detroit an ugly 55-34, but the Wings held on thanks to a 24-stop effort from John Gibson and a superb 18-shot-bock effort by his defense in front of #36.

Dylan Larkin broke open the scoring only 8:22 into the 1st period, on a power play marker from Seider and Raymond, and Mason Appleton gave Detroit a 2-0 lead at 14:48 off a lovely set of passes from Rasmussen and Compher…

Detroit sort of sailed through a 2nd period that wasn’t all that awake, and while the Jets put the hammer down in the 2nd and 3rd, out-shooting Detroit by a 20-9 cumulative total, Logan Stanley was the only Jet to dent Gibson, scoring at 7:04 of the 3rd period, and the Wings killed a power play to Winnipeg at 8:24 and held on from there.

PREGAME: John Gibson and Connor Hellebuyck led their respective teams out to the ice at LCA:

There was an on-ice reunion during warmups as well:

The Jets post their lineup card in the middle of the day, and there were no changes to the lineup as of game time…

And the Red Wings posted their lines a lot closer to puck drop:

1ST PERIOD:

The teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

PENALTY: Josh Morrissey elbowed the face of one Dylan Larkin at 7:12 of the 1st period, and sat down with a roughing penalty as a result.

GOAL: Dylan Larkin set up on the power play, and worked the cycle from Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond, who set up what would be a long shot that Hellebuyck never saw. Larkin would score his 21st at 8:22 of the 1st.

Detroit 1, Winnipeg 0: Larkin (21) from Seider (24) and Raymond (32) at 8:22 1ST period.

GOAL: Off a scramble play at center ice, where Demelo fanned on a dump-in, J.T. Compher and Mason Appleton roared in 2-on-1, they beat the Jets’ Brayden Schenn with a lateral pass, and Appleton tucked the puck under Hellebuyck’s blocker. Schenn tried to clear the puck and put it into his goal instead at 14:48.

Detroit 2, Winnipeg 0: Appleton (5) from Compher (9) at 14:48 1st period.

2ND PERIOD:

PENALTY: Vladislav Namestnikov hit Moritz Seider into the end boards and sat for cross-checking at 1:04 of the 2nd period.

PENALTY: Patrick Kane took a hooking penalty at 4:13 of the 2nd period.

PENALTY: Winnipeg’s Cole Perfetti hooked James van Riemsdyk and sat at 12:20 of the 2nd period.

PENALTY: Only 20 seconds later, Dylan Larkin was called for slashing at 12:40 of the 2nd period.

3RD PERIOD:

GOAL: Logan Stanley took a turnover by the Wings and ripped a shot through John Gibson’s 5-hole off passes from Toews and Perfetti, making it 2-1 at 7:04.

Detroit 2, Winnipeg 1: Stanley (7) from Toews (8) and Perfetti (7) at 7:04 3rd period.

PENALTY: Dylan Larkin was called for holding at 8:24 of the 3rd.

GOALIE PULL: Winnipeg pulled Hellebuyck with 2:28 left in the 3rd.
