Red Wings-Stars Tweetcap: Captain Larkin delivers an OT Christmas present against the Star-studded Stars

The Red Wings ended their pre-Christmas schedule with a match-up against the scintillating Dallas Stars on Tuesday evening.

The Stars came into the game having won five straight games, and as Dallas began it’s “Fathers’ Trip,” they were looking to keep the good times rolling.

On Tuesday night, Dallas pushed Detroit to its limits. James van Riemsdyk would open the scoring at 9:23 of the 1st period, scoring off a lovely little pass from Michael Rasmussen at the side of Casey DeSmith…

But Dallas would score a PPG at 10:47 of the 2nd, from Roope Hintz, and Dallas would score a shorty at 19:16 as Jamie Benn ripped home a hard rebound through Gibson…

Emmitt Finnie jabbed a Lucas Raymond pass home from Lucas Raymond at 3:02 of the 3rd, however, and after Wyatt Johnston broke the game open with a 3-2 goal at 11:18 of the 3rd…

Dylan Larkin scored his 19th goal at 15:57 of the 3rd on the PP, and this happened in OT:

Captain Larkin’s 20th goal, at 34 seconds of OT, gave Detroit its 3rd win in a row and gave John Gibson his 8th in a row.

PREGAME: John Gibson and Casey DeSmith led their respective teams out onto the ice at Little Caesars Arena…

The Stars only post their starters…

But the Red Wings posted their full lineup:

1ST PERIOD:

The teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

GOAL: Michael Rasmussen chugged up the right wing side off a fine block by James van Riemsdyk, Rasmussen dumped the puck off the right wing boards at the blueline, got it back, and charged deep into the Stars’ zone, centered the puck and JvR put it home at the side of the Stars’ goal at 9:23.

Detroit 1, Dallas 0: James van Riemsdyk (9) from Rasmussen (6) and Edvinsson (9) at 9:23 1st.

PENALTY: Moritz Seider was called for holding at 18:22 of the 1st.

2ND PERIOD:

NO GOAL: Nate Danielson very explicitly cut off a pass by Marco Kasper and kicked it into the net, but he was pissed off when it was called off at 5:17 of the 2nd period.

PENALTY: Dylan Larkin tripped Wyatt Johnston at 9:03 of the 2nd period.

GOAL: Sadly, Detroit’s penalty-killers got caught out very long and Robertson blasted a slot shot through traffic, Rantanen got the rebound and turned and passed to Roope Hintz, who ripped a shot over John Gibson’s blocker as the Wings’ goaltender battled a screen, giving Dallas a PPG at 10:47.

Detroit 1, Dallas 1: Hintz (12) from Rantanen (36) and Robertson (22) at 10:47 2nd period, PPG.

PENALTY: Casey DeSmith tripped Emmitt Finnie and Rantanen served the penalty at 14:41 of the 2nd.

GOAL: Dallas’ Duchene walked around Simon Edvinsson, Moritz Seider slipped trying to block Duchene’s pass and Jamie Benn chipped a goal past a sliding John Gibson at 19:16 of the 2nd.

Detroit 1, Dallas 2: Benn (7) from Duchene (3) and Hryckowian (7) at 19:16 2nd period.

3RD PERIOD:

INJURY: James van Riemsdyk did not return to the bench for the 3rd period, reported TNT’s Brian Boucher.

PENALTY: Jacob-Bernard Docker infuriated Hryckowian by blasting Hryckowian with a nasty hit to the shoulder, and the Stars forward bit. He jumped JBD, and sat for roughing at 2:00 of the 3rd.

GOAL: ON a cycling power play, Emmitt Finnie jammed the rebound of a Lucas Raymond shot through DeSmith at 3:02 of the 3rd period.

Detroit 2, Dallas 2: Finnie (9) from Raymond (28) and Seider (22) at 3:02 of the 3rd period, PPG.

PENALTY: Axel Sandin Pellikka took a stick foul penalty at 7:13 of the 3rd period, sitting for hooking.

RETURN: James van Riemsdyk returned as Dallas began the power play.

PENALTY: Sadly, van Riemsdyk’s return gave Dallas a power play when he grabbed Nils Lundkvist in front of the ref at 10:59 of the 3rd.

GOAL: Wyatt Johnston scored his 20th goal via a pass from Miro Heiskanen to the slot, where the puck was tipped past Gibson at 11:18 of the 3rd.

Detroit 2, Dallas 3: Johnston (20) from Heiskanen (27) and Rantanen (37) at 11:18 3rd period, PPG.

PENALTY: Lucas Raymond gave Dallas its 5th PP with 13:30 gone for cross-checking Lybushkin.

PENALTY: Rantanen took a penalty for a pick on Edvinsson at 14:09 of the 3rd, giving Detroit 1:21 of a 4 on 4 then a short power play.

GOAL: Dylan Larkin took a pass from James van Riemsdyk and Lucas Raymond back-door and jammed it past DeSmith for his 19th goal and a game-tying mark at 15:57 of the 3rd period.

Detroit 3, Dallas 3: Larkin (19) from van Riemsdyk (2) and Raymond (29) at 15:57 3rd period, PPG.

OVERTIME: Detroit earned a point and headed to OT.

GOAL: Dylan Larkin scored his 20th goal via puck possession off a little shifty deke around Jason Robertson 34 seconds into OT!

Detroit 4, Dallas 3: Larkin (20) from Seider (23) and Raymond (30) at 34 seconds OT.
