Red Wings-Flames Tweetcap: Detroit ropes a knuckle-biter in Stampede City

The Detroit Red Wings faced a Calgary Flames team that had gone 7-2-and-1 over the course of their past 10 games on Wednesday night, with Calgary hoping to sweep a 4-game home stand. Detroit was looking build upon a 2-game winning streak as they entered a set of 3 games to be played over the course of 4 nights.

On Wednesday night in Calgary, the Red Wings won a WILD ONE in the Saddledome, roping Calgary up 4-0 over the first 40 minutes of play, only to surrender 3 goals in the 3rd period, and emerging with a 4-3 victory (in no small part thanks to a 34-stop performance by John Gibson).

Alex DeBrincat would open the scoring with a nice little give-and-take from Patrick Kane at 1:02, and at 4:33, Axel Sandin Pellikka ripped a one-timer from DeBrincat through Logan Cooley…

At 7:41, DeBrincat would score his second goal of the game from Andrew Copp, and at 9:09 of the 2nd, Larkin would score from Raymond on a glorious break-away-from-the-pack race…

But Joel Farabee was given a penalty shot as the Simon Edvinsson-less Wings (Edvinsson suffered a “lower-body injury” and left the game after 2 periods of play) surrendered a rush where ASP got caught hooking Farabee, and he beat Gibson over the glove one-on-one at 8:02…

At 9:07, Matt Coronato would make it 4-2, and at 14:40, MacKenzie Weegar blasted a shot through a sea of Red Wings and Flames to make it 4-3…

But Detroit held on and emerged with a victory that was waaaaaaay harder than it should have been to grab, especially with the Edmonton Oilers resting at home, waiting for tomorrow night’s affair.

PREGAME: John Gibson and Devin Cooley led their respective teams onto the ice at the Scotiabank Saddledome:

The Flames only post their starters…

So we’ll rely on FlamesNation’s Ryan Pike for the Flames’ line combinations…

And the Red Wings posted their lineup just prior to puck drop:

Tonight’s game was nationally televised on Sportsnet, too…

And the old Saddledome has some legendary “walks”…

1ST PERIOD:

The teams dressed the following starters and lineups (Ken Daniels explained that Bernard-Docker was injured, thus the inclusion of Travis Hamonic):

GOAL: Only 1:02 into the 1st period, DeBrincat, Copp and Kane chugged up the gut, Copp drove the net and deferred puck to Kane, Kane charged up the right wing and laterally passed the puck to Alex DeBrincat, and DeBrincat ripped a shot in through Devin Cooley to make it 1-0 Detroit at 1:02 of the 1st.

Detroit 1, Calgary 0: DeBrincat (15) from Kane (8) and Copp (11) at 1:02 1st.

GOAL: Patrick Kane set up the play and dropped to DeBrincat on the right wing side near the blueline. Axel Sandin Pellikka dropped into the left wing side at the low dot and ripped a one-timer through Cooley with Copp driving the net again to make it 2-0 Detroit at 4:33.

Detroit 2, Calgary 0: Axel Sandin Pellikka (3) from DeBrincat (18) and Kane (16).

PENALTIES: John Gibson got poked by Kevin Bahl after the play as Calgary rallied late in the 1st, and Gibson went after both Bahl and Ryan Lomberg.

As a result, Lomberg and Klapka sat for roughing, and Hamonic and Gibson sat for roughing, all at 18:11.

2ND PERIOD:

PENALTY: At 2:32 of the 2nd period, Marco Kasper went for holding Nazem Kadri.

PENALTY: Blake Coleman was called for tripping Emmitt Finnie at 3:51. The teams would play 4 on 4 for 34 seconds.

PENALTY: Dylan Larkin tripped up Nazem Kadri at 4:27 of the 2nd, negating the Wings’ power play.

GOAL: After the Red Wings killed the penalty, Andrew Copp stole the puck from a Flame at the left wing half boards, he fed Alex DeBrincat, and DeBrincat chipped the puck top shelf to give Detroit a 3-0 lead at 7:40…

Detroit 3, Calgary 0: DeBrincat (16) from Copp (12) at 7:41 2nd period.

Then Devin Cooley stopped James van Riemsdyk on a pure breakaway.

GOAL: Dylan Larkin took a flipper that bounced away from a Flames defenseman at the Wings’ blueline, he raced up the right wing side away from 3 Flames defenders, chugged up the gut and went blocker side on Cooley to make it 4-0 Detroit at 9:09 of the 2nd.

Detroit 4, Calgary 0: Larkin (17) from Raymond (23) at 9:09 2nd.

PENALTY: Then Jonathan Huberdeau drew a penalty on Andrew Copp for holding at 9:35 of the 2nd…

And Detroit was out-shot 15-8 in the 2nd, but emerged up 4-0.

3RD PERIOD:

INJURY: There was bad news from Ken Daniels in that Simon Edvinsson had left the bench after blocking a shot with his left foot late in the 2nd period. Detroit was down to 5 defensemen.

FYI:

PENALTY: Adam Klapka clipped Moritz Seider from behind, forcing Seider down on his own tailbone, and after James van Riemsdyk let Klapka know that his move wasn’t kosher, Klapka retaliated, and sat for 2:00 for roughing at 6:33 of the 3rd.

PENALTY SHOT: Axel Sandin Pellikka hooked Joel Farabee on a breakaway and that was a penalty shot penalty.

GOAL: Farabee would score over Gibson’s glove to convert on a shorthanded penalty shot goal at 8:02.

Detroit 4, Calgary 1: Farabee (8), unassisted, penalty shot, shorthanded.

GOAL: Calgary hit Compher into Rasmussen behind the Flames’ net, raced up 3 on 2, and Nazem Kadri found Matt Coronato to make it 4-2 at 9:07 of the 3rd.

Detroit 4, Calgary 2: Coronato (10) from Kadri (21) at 9:07 3rd period, 1:05 after the 4-1 goal by Farabee.

There was a penalty-possible situation with 7:30 remaining in the 3rd period when Dylan Larkn poked the puck into Cooley and Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee pile-drove Larkin into the ice behind the goal, but Larkin got up sore and angry, and nothing more.

GOAL: MacKenzie Weegar blasted a heavy shot through three Red Wings, including Michael Rasmussen, and Weegar found the back of the net to make it 4-3 at 14:40 of the 3rd.

Detroit 4, Calgary 3: Weegar (2) from Andersson (15) and Kadri (22) at 14:40 3rd.

GOALIE PULL: Logan Cooley headed out of the net with 1:30 left in the 3rd.
