Red Wings-Rangers Tweetcap: DeBrincat, Raymond and Detroit out-duel Rangers’ Quick

The Detroit Red Wings had lost 4 of their past 5 games heading into a match-up with the New York Rangers on Sunday night, who were 7-3-and-1 in their past 12 games heading into Sunday night’s affair.

At Madison Square Garden on Sunday night, the Red Wings managed to defeat the New York Rangers 2-1, though there was a near-brawl at the end of the game…

Alex DeBrincat opened the scoring at 9:30 of the 2nd on a power play, scoring a gorgeous goal from Raymond and Kane, but Miikka Zibanejad would tie the game at 11:59 on the Rangers’ own power play–a borderline call on Moritz Seider for “delay of game”–and it took the Red Wings a 14-shot 3rd period to solve the tremendous Jonathan Quick, with Lucas Raymond finishing off the game at 16:13 of the 3rd from Larkin and Seider.

Quick stopped 40 shots for the Rangers, while Talbot stopped a sturdy 18 for the Red Wings, and Detroit went 1-for-6 on the PP and 1-for-2 on the PK.

PREGAME: Jonathan Quick and Cam Talbot led their respective teams out onto the ice at MSG:

The Red Wings actually listed their lineup first…

And we’ll rely on Rangers beat writer Johnny Lazarus for the Rangers’ lineup…

As the team only lists its starters, at puck drop:

1ST PERIOD:

The teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

The Red Wings and Ranger more or less traded rushes for the first 8-10 minutes of the 1st period, with no team sustaining momentum in the other team’s end for lengthy periods of time.

That’s not to say that it was a pedestrian 1st period: Detroit and New York both displayed their skills and managed to push each other hard, but Jonathan Quick was continuing his mastery of the Wings with save after save, and when Talbot was tested, he calmly stifled the Rangers’ attempts.

The Rangers really came on in the period’s final 2:45, pushing heavily toward the Red Wings’ goal as Detroit made some mistakes in coverage, but Talbot held on and the Wings’ defense did, too.

PENALTY: Moritz Seider took an interference penalty at 18:41.

Andrew Copp actually got the best chance of the 1st half of the PP thanks to a shorthanded break, but Jonathan Quick made a huge stop to stifle Copp’s breakaway.

2ND PERIOD:

Detroit had 41 seconds of PK time to start the 2nd period, and the Wings killed the penalty.

After Michael Rasmussen hit the goalpost behind Jonathan Quick…

PENALTY: Gavrikov was called for tripping at 4:04 of the 2nd period.

Detroit did not score on the power play, though they generated several opportunities with Axel Sandin Pellikka working the first unit with Larkin, Raymond, Kane and DeBrincat, and Seider working the second unit with Copp, Danielson, Finnie and van Riemsdyk.

PENALTY: Laba was then called for hooking Patrick Kane in the offensive zone at 7:54 of the 2nd period.

GOAL: Detroit managed to cycle the hell out of the Rangers on the power play, and it appeared that Lucas Raymond riffled a shot through Jonathan Quick at 9:30 of the 2nd period…but Alex DeBrincat tapped the puck home before the puck crossed the goal line.

Detroit 1, New York 0: DeBrincat (9) from Raymond (15) and Kane (6) at 9:30 of the 2nd period, PPG.

PENALTY: Moritz Seider was called for “delay of game” for chipping the puck out of play with one skate over the blueline.

GOAL: Of course, the New York Rangers were stifled as Cam Talbot was unable to stop Zibanejad from jabbing the rebound of a Rangers shot into the goal at 11:59 of the 2nd period.

Detroit 1, New York 1: Zibanejad (7) from Cuylle (5) and Panarin (13) at 11:59 of the 2nd, PPG.

PENALTY: Sam Carrick was called for holding J.T. Compher’s stick at 12:54 of the 2nd period.

Detroit did not score on the power play, and in fact, another blueline bobble by Moritz Seider yielded a Zibanejad breakaway that was fired wide of Cam Talbot.

The Red Wings dominated the 2nd period shots-wise, but Trocheck nearly scored 19:00 in, when his shot went off Ben Chiarot’s butt and under Talbot instead of into the top shelf of Detroit’s goal.

The Rangers were particularly dangerous at the end of the 2nd period, with the Wings taking their eye off the puck, but Detroit did OK and managed to survive.

3RD PERIOD:

PENALTY: Will Cuylle was called for tripping at 6:39, after some good rushes and time of possession for both teams, affording Detroit a crucial power play.

PENALTY: At the end of their first power play, Laba was called for slashing at 8:38, affording Detroit 2 seconds of a 5-on-3.

Detroit did not score on either power play, mostly because Zibanejad’s butt stopped a Patrick Kane shot, and the Rangers did a fine job of keeping the Wings from the front of Quick’s sight lines.

GOAL: Lucas Raymond did an amazing job of scoring on the Wings’ 41st shot, cycling around the net and chipping the puck past Jonathan Quick as he flailed and his defense tried to over-cover Dylan Larkin to make it 2-1 Detroit.

Detroit 2, New York 1: Raymond (5) from Larkin (12) and Seider (9) at 16:13 3rd.

GOALIE PULL: Jonathan Quick headed to the bench with 2:03 remaining, but had to return to the net with 1:49 left as Artemi Panarin iced the puck…

GOALIE PULL: The Rangers pulled Quick again with about 1:10 remaining, and the Rangers launched a full-out assault on Talbot…

TIMEOUT: With 48.8 left in the 3rd, the Rangers called timeout.

The teams had a bench-clearing brawl of sorts after Mason Appleton fired the puck into an empty net and Jonathan Quick came off the bench furious:
