Red Wings-Kings Tweetcap: Devil’s night shootout delight

The Red Wings began a difficult stretch of 3 games to be played over the course of 4 nights in the state of California on Thursday evening, facing off against the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com arena.

On Thursday night and Friday morning, Detroit time, the Detroit Red Wings won a WILD game in Los Angeles, rallying from a 1-0 shorthanded deficit to the Kings, who opened the scoring 12:39 into the 1st shorthanded via an Alex Lafreniere goal…

By goals from Alex DeBrincat at 13:22 (on the same power play), Marco Kasper (on the second power play), and Kasper again at 14:45 of the 3rd…

But Los Angeles rallied with two even-strength goals with Darcy Kuemper on the bench, surrendering markers to Corey Perry at 17:47 of the 3rd and Quinton Byfield with only 1:33 remaining…

And everybody thought that Kevin Fiala chipped home the game-winner late in overtime, on a Kings power play, but his goal was negated for going into Cam Talbot’s crease by himself…

And Lucas Raymond scored in the shootout, Cam Talbot made three stops in the extra-extra-time session, and Detroit emerged with a 4-3 shootout victory.

PREGAME: Darcy Kuemper and Cam Talbot led their respective teams out onto the ice at Crypto.com Arena…

The Kings only list their starting lineup…

So we’ll rely on Zach Dooley, the LA Kings Insider, for Los Angeles’ lineup…

While the Red Wings post their lines just prior to game time:

1ST PERIOD:

The teams dressed the following starters and lineups:

PENALTY: At 9:16 of the 1st, Phillip Danault was called for tripping Axel Sandin Pellikka, with Detroit trailing in shots 6-2 to a Kings team that came out with a scintillating start.

Los Angeles’ big, heavy defenders were stifling Detroit big time early on, with LA taking a 7-3 shot lead after the Wings’ PP, and Detroit was basically playing LA’s game, especially with the Kings’ sticks and bodies in shooting and passing lanes.

Detroit began to wake up some 14:00 into the 1st, with Lucas Raymond and Dylan Larkin generating good chances…

PENALTY: Ben Chiarot got tagged for holding at 14:59 of the 1st, affording Los Angeles its first power play.

Detroit gave up 2 shots but killed the penalty well, affording Los Angeles little clear ice on the slop that is Crypto.com’s frozen gravel.

Elmer Soderblom got a great scoring chance with about 1:40 left in the 1st, blockered away on a breakaway by Kuemper…

And the first period ended in an 0-0 tie.

2ND PERIOD:

Detroit did a very good job of coming out for the 2nd period with intensity and pace–much better than the 1st period’s sort of passive play–and the Wings racked up shots on Kuemper and zone time in LA’s end of the ice as the period began.

The Wings won something like 7 of the first 8 faceoffs in the 2nd period, and both teams got wonderful chances on each other’s goaltenders as the teams traded chances over the course of the first 8 minutes, but nobody could penetrate the netminders.

Talbot made the biggest stop of the period, stopping Adrian Kempe with a gorgeous glove save at 10:09…

Wildly, Simon Edvinsson tipped a Quinton Byfield shot inadvertently past Cam Talbot toward the left goalpost, and the puck bounced right out into Talbot’s body at 11:12, and the Wings’ goalie held on for dear life…

PENALTY: Kevin Fiala tripped Alex DeBrincat at 12:28 of the 2nd period, affording Detroit its second power play.

GOAL: Detroit gave up an ugly shorthanded goal.

Emmitt Finnie won a draw back to Seider, but the pass Seider intended for DeBrincat went off his skate, Alex Laferriere skated in 1-on-1 and Emmitt Finnie could not stop Laferriere as he raced in and bounced the puck past Cam Talbot to make it 1-0 Los Angeles at 13:22.

Los Angeles 1, Detroit 0: Laferriere (3) from Byfield (7) and Ceci (2) at 12:39 2nd period, shorthanded.

GOAL: Detroit would tie the game as Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond played catch, dropped the puck down to Alex DeBrincat, and “The Cat” would rip a one-timer through Darcy Kuemper’s blocker hole at 13:22 of the 2nd period.

Los Angeles 1, Detroit 1: DeBrincat (3) from Raymond (7) and Seider (4) at 13:22 2nd period, PPG.

PENALTY: Then Joel Edmundsson took a cross-checking penalty off a Detroit flurry at 14:09 of the 2nd, affording Detroit another power play.

GOAL: Marco Kasper was able to tip a gorgeous shot by Axel Sandin Pellikka into the net behind Darcy Kuemper on the Wings’ second PP unit, and the officials reviewed the goal…Which counted at 15:46 of the 2nd period!

Los Angeles 1, Detroit 2: Kasper (2) from Sandin Pellikka (2) and Copp (4) at 15:46 2nd period, PPG.

Los Angeles pressed hard after the Wings’ goal, but Talbot made some astute stops, and Detroit boxed out the Kings’ efforts for the most part, giving Talbot the ability to see and stop pucks.

3RD PERIOD:

PENALTY: Only 2:43 into the 3rd period, Elmer Soderblom got called for tripping Andrei Kuzmenko, which wasn’t realistic given that Kuzmenko fell down after shooting the puck.

PENALTY: At 4:33 of the 3rd period, Andrew Copp was called for hooking Quinton Byfield, who fell into the boards awkwardly, giving the Kings an 11-second 5-on-3.

TIMEOUT: Los Angeles called timeout at 4:33 to rest their first PP unit.

Detroit killed the penalties with aplomb, though Talbot had to make some smart stops. Mostly, the Wings’ “diamond” PK, which was illustrated on FanDuel Sports Network Detroit with a small black line superimposed onto the ice, looked great.

Off a strange play where Marco Kasper gave up possession of a puck trying to force a pass in the offensive zone, Cam Talbot was bowled over by a King, and Kempe tried to tuck the rebound home from below the goal line, but Mason Appleton hugged the post with his skate.

Talbot made an IMMENSE stop when Ben Chiarot and Axel Sandin Pellikka got a little lazy on their coverage, and Brandt Clarke was able to get loose in front of the net, with Talbot anticipating the pass from below the goal line.

GOAL: Marco Kasper chipped the puck out of Detroit’s zone to Alex DeBrincat, and DeBrincat chugged up the left wing boards, paused, sent the puck across ice to Mason Appleton, and he reversed in the LA slot, finding Marco Kasper at the top of the Kings’ crease. Detroit took a 3-1 lead at 14:45 of the 3rd period.

Los Angeles 1, Detroit 3: Kasper (3) from Appleton (3) and DeBrincat (9) at 14:45 3rd period.

GOALIE PULL: Kuemper headed to the bench with 2:48 left in the 3rd period.

GOAL: Off a Marco Kasper faceoff loss to Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles sent the puck to the point, where Kevin Fiala and Adrian Kempe ripped the puck toward the net, and Corey Perry would jab a rebound marker into the goal past Cam Talbot at 17:47, affording Los Angeles a 3-2 deficit.

Los Angeles 2, Detroit 3: Perry (4) from Kempe (10) and Fiala (4) at 17:47 3rd.

GOAL: Los Angeles won the draw again and Quinton Byfield sent the puck tipped toward the net, it was blocked by Johansson, and Byfield ripped a rebound into the top shelf of the goal. No chance for Talbot, 3-3 tie at 18:27 of the 3rd period.

Los Angeles 3, Detroit 3: Byfield (3) from Kopitar (5) and Fiala (5) at 18:27 3rd.

IN OVERTIME…

PENALTY: Simon Edvinsson was called for a phantom slash at 3:58, affording LA a power play off a tremendous set of up-and-down rushes, dominated by LA more and more as overtime progressed.

GOAL? On the power play, Anze Koiptar was able to center the puck to Kevin Fiala, who was in the crease with Cam Talbot, and at 4:21 of the OT period, Los Angeles would have won 4-3…

INSTEAD, DETROIT KILLED THE PENALTY AND WENT TO A SHOOTOUT.

IN THE SHOOTOUT…

  1. The Wings of last season would’ve definitely lost that game.

Nice to see Kasper have a great game. Hope Gibson beats his old team tonight.
