Red Wings-Maple Leafs Tweetcap: resilient Red Wings rally from 2-0 hole, defeat Toronto 6-3

The Detroit Red Wings looked to bounce back from an embarrassing opening-night loss as Detroit hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs, kicking off a home-and-home series between the teams.

On Saturday night, things did not start well for the Detroit Red Wings. Only 2:27 into the 1st period, Calle Jarnkrok jammed a Nicholas Roy pass into the net behind Cam Talbot, and at 12:29 of the 1st, Roy scored himself on a rush with Rielly and Nylander that had Seider and Chiarot hitting each other in confusion…

But Marco Kasper opened the scoring for Detroit 8:56 into the 2nd, Lucas Raymond scored goal #99 at 14:55, Patrick Kane scored a glorious marker at 18:10…

And while Max Domi made things sweaty and nervous for every Wings fan in LCA at 238 with a 3-3 marker, Raymond would score goal #100 on the power play at 6:45, and Simon Edvinsson and Andrew Copp would score empty-netters to make a 4-3 win look like a rout.

Cam Talbot stopped 20 of 23 shots; Detroit fired 33 on Anthony Stolarz, who stopped 29.

Detroit went 1-for-4 on the PP and killed 2 Toronto power plays.

It was Detroit’s first win of the young season, and the teams will reprise their roles in Toronto at 2 PM EDT on Monday, October 13th.

PREGAME: The Red Wings hit the ice at Little Caesars Arena just before 6:30 PM:

And the Hockey News’s David Alter offered a different kind of experience:

These remain sharp:

Both teams listed their lineups…

1ST PERIOD: The Red Wings and Maple Leafs dressed the following starters and lineups:

Both teams came out flying and Detroit generated a couple of 2-on-1’s, including a Marco Kasper backhand that went wide…

But Toronto was mastering turnovers in Detroit’s zone, and the Wings had some hiccups early.

NHL.com had a sense of humor as well:

GOAL: Sadly, Detroit suffered a turnover at the Wings’ blueline, and Chris Tanev ripped the puck to Nicholas Roy, the puck bounced strangely to Calle Jarnkrok, and he jabbed the puck into the net past Talbot’s right toe.

TORONTO 1, DETROIT 0 at 2:27 1st. Jarnkrok from Roy and Tanev.

Detroit was doing a great job in Toronto’s zone, streaking up the ice and cycling with support, but the turnovers through center ice and in the Wings’ own zone were affording Toronto unearned momentum and chances on Talbot.

GOAL: Nicholas Roy tipped down a Morgan Rielly shot while battling Ben Chiarot and Moritz Seider, with Calle Jarnkrok in front as well, and it was 2-0 Toronto at 12:29.

TORONTO 2, DETROIT 0. Roy from Rielly and Nylander at 12:29 1st.

Auston Matthews then hit the crossbar on the next shift, from the low slot…

PENALTY: thankfully, J.T. Compher was tripped by Brandon Carlo at 16:35, affording Detroit a needed power play.

The first unit did a lot of over-passing despite some good puck possession, and Toronto killed the penalty.

2ND PERIOD: Toronto was down a forward:

The Leafs held possession on Detroit for the first couple of minutes, and then the Red Wings flexed and really pushed well, but the Wings couldn’t finish, and Toronto continued to get more and more regular chances on Talbot.

Bergrren got tied up with Stolarz, but the Red Wings could not score with the Leafs’ goaltender down and out…

Talbot did make a TREMENDOUS stop on Auston Matthews point blank off a very rare Sandin Pellikka turnover.

GOAL: Patrick Kane won a battle at the right half boards, slid the puck diagonally to Marco Kasper, and he chipped a puck over Anthony Stolarz’ glove at 8:56.

TORONTO 2, DETROIT 1. Kasper from Kane and DeBrincat at 8:56 2nd period.

Toronto’s goalie continued to stifle Detroit, however…

GOAL: Larkin, Finnie and Raymond cycled hard in the offensive zone, Finnie fed Larkin behind the net, Nic Roy’s skate tapped a Larkin pass to the back door and Raymond stuffed the puck into the goal to tie the game 2-2 at 14:55.

TORONTO 2, DETROIT 2. Raymond from Larkin and Finnie at 14:55 2nd period.

GOAL: Albert Johansson slithered a shot off Stolarz, but the puck came to Alex DeBrincat, he laterally passed the puck to Patrick Kane, who lifted his stick to let DeBrincat know he was open, and Kane ripped a one-timer into the net at 18:10.

TORONTO 2, DETROIT 3. Kane from DeBrincat and Johansson at 18:10 2nd period.

3RD PERIOD:

PENALTY: Axel Sandin Pellikka was called for an interference minor at 1:02 of the 3rd period.

Detroit killed the penalty as the Leafs got a goalpost chance from Auston Matthews, but then…

PENALTY: Auston Matthews was called at 1:42 for high-sticking Ben Chiarot.

The teams played 4 on 4 for 1:20, and…

GOAL: Max Domi let Morgan Rielly push the defense back, Seider and Chiarot got crossed up, and Domi fired against the grain, JUST getting the puck through Cam Talbot at 2:38.

TORONTO 3, DETROIT 3. Domi from Rielly at 2:38 3rd period.

Detroit did not score on its short power play.

PENALTY: Oliver Ekman-Larsson was called for tripping at 5:42 of the 2nd period.

GOAL: Lucas Raymond RIPPED a back-door pass from Patrick Kane, off a lateral pass from Alex DeBrincat, over Anthony Stolarz and in at 6:45 of the 3rd.

TORONTO 3, DETROIT 4. Raymond from Kane and DeBrincat at 6:45 3rd. PPG.

PENALTY: At 7:21 of the 3rd, Max Domi pulled Jonatan Berggren down to give himself a breakaway. That’s tripping.

Detroit did not score on the power play, and instead, Domi nearly scored on a breakaway that Cam Talbot’s toe stifled.

PENALTIES: Bobby McMann and Simon Edvinsson sat for roughing at 11:54 after getting into a tussle at the Leafs’ blueline. 4 on 4.

Lucas Raymond was kneed by OEL and then cross-checked by Rielly in the Leafs’ zone. No calls.

PENALTY: Jonatan Berggren sat for hooking in the Toronto zone at 14:56 of the 3rd period, on his first shift in about 8 minutes. Bad penalty…

Detroit killed the penalty, barely, by Talbot, and Knies and Edvinsson then tried to fight, but the linesmen got in the way.

GOAL: Edvinsson scored an empty-net goal at 18:39 from Cam Talbot.

TORONTO 3, DETROIT 5. Edvinsson from Talbot at 18:39, ENG.

GOAL: Andrew Copp scored another empty-netter from no one but himself at 19:55.

TORONTO 3, DETROIT 6. Copp, unassisted, ENG.
