And WOOD TV8’s Cameron James posted a video report regarding today’s affair:
The Free Press’s Helene St. James also posted a morning article which discusses coach Todd McLellan’s goals for Detroit’s 8-games-in-12-nights exhibition season:
Sunday’s Red-White Game in Grand Rapids – slated to have the same two, 20-minute period format as the three scrimmages in Traverse City – concludes training camp. The Wings begin their exhibition schedule Tuesday against the Chicago Blackhawks; for eight games, the competition on the ice will take better shape as the Wings won’t just be looking across at someone wearing the same uniform.
“All of a sudden it’s a different color jersey and the emotions start to heat up a little bit,” McLellan said. “We’ll be watching for that.”
…
The slate of exhibition games projects to allow every skater to appear in at least four. The games also play a crucial role this fall, as the Wings have yet to work on special teams.
“There’s phases to the exhibition games,” McLellan said. “The first few we’re going to play a lot of different guys in different situations. We haven’t even talked about power play or penalty kill or anything like that. The games tend to be ragged. You really see instinctual-type hockey. There’s a few things we worked on that we expect to see. But we actually want to see some mismatches to see if individuals can handle it. That’s the first phase.
“The second phase is we start to whittle things down and make decisions and then those last two games, you’re starting to really fine-tune your power play, combinations are a lot more of what we will see during the season, and you’re going with a much more mature, we think this might be our lineup, roster.”
