From the Yzerman presser: Simon Edvinsson has a lower-body injury, should be back for the start of the regular season; Carter Bear is good to go

According to Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman, prospect Carter Bear will be ready to go for training camp scrimmages and eventually the Red & White Game and exhibitions…

But Simon Edvinsson has a lower-body injury, and he won’t be back until around the start of the regular season.

Those were all the injuries of note from Yzerman.

He also stated that, as of right now, there are no Pro Try-Outs (PTO’s). They’re still talking with players and agents, but some PTO’s went elsewhere, and some are still debating where to go.

Update: Per MLive’s Ansar Khan:

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson will miss training camp and the preseason with a lower-body injury. General manager Steve Yzerman is hopeful Edvinsson will be ready for the start of the regular season on Oct. 9.

“We’ll have him ready to go sometime around the start of the regular season,” Yzerman said on Wednesday.

The Red Wings hit the ice for training camp Thursday in Traverse City.

Yzerman said forward Carter Bear, the team’s top pick in this year’s draft (No. 13) has been cleared to take part in camp after undergoing surgery for a torn Achilles in April. The Red Wings held him out of last weekend’s prospects games in Dallas as a precaution.

“He hasn’t really played games since March,” Yzerman said. “(He’s) practiced and skating with the guys and the staff’s thought was instead of throwing him right into a game in Dallas, the next step is here in training camp into more intense practice, scrimmaging, Red- White in Grand Rapids on Sunday and then get him into the preseason. So, he’s fine.”

Update #2: Per the Free Press’s Helene St. James:

Edvinsson, 22, had 31 points and a plus-12 rating in 78 games last season while averaging around 21 minutes per game, third-most on the team. He averaged around 90 seconds per game killing penalties.

Coach Todd McLellan and the Wings have a good handle on Edvinsson’s skill set, so there’s limited damage as far as figuring out where he fits in. And his absence does open room for McLellan to get more looks at newcomers Travis Hamonic and Jacob Bernard-Docker, who are vying for spots in the regular six rotation.
