Video: A bit of Scotty Bowman discussing Sergei Fedorov’s legacy on Local 4
On WDIV’s 6 PM news, Local 4 did a feature on the news that the Red Wings are retiring Sergei Fedorov’s #91, and Scotty Bowman received about 90 seconds’ worth of on-the-phone screen time, discussing Fedorov’s athletic abilities and his contributions to the 1998 Stanley Cup win.
Speaking of the 1998 Stanley Cup win, WDIV also re-posted their 1998 Stanley Cup special on their YouTube page:

A ‘top ten Sergei Fedorov moments’ list includes that 5-goal game vs. Washington
Daily Faceoff’s Tyler Kuehl compiled a list of Sergei Fedorov’s top 10 moments as a Red Wing, and individually speaking, it’s hard to top his 5-goal night vs. the Washington Capitals in December of 1996:
Five Goals vs. Washington
Of all the accolades that Fedorov brought home during his time wearing the winged wheel, there was one night when everything clicked for him and his closest teammates.
On Dec. 26, 1996, the Red Wings hosted the Capitals (you see a trend of Fedorov with/against the Caps, eh?) and reigning Vezina Trophy winner Jim Carey. Fedorov went off, scoring all five of Detroitâs goals in a thrilling 5-4 overtime win.
It was the second-most goals scored by a Red Wing in a single game, second only to Syd Howeâs six-goal outing 52 years earlier.
While the performance was as much of an accomplishment for Fedorov, it highlighted the power of the Russian 5 â Fedorov, Konstantinov, Igor Larionov, Vyacheslav Kozlov and Vyacheslav Fetisov. Konstantinov picked up four assists in the win. Larionov had a pair of helpers, while Fetisov had an assist as well. The group that first came together during the 1995-96 season ultimately played essential roles in the teamâs championship runs in the following years.
Continued; Kuehl weighs both great moments for Fedorov and some not-so-happy times, too.

Thoughts about Sergei Fedorov’s tricky legacy
Sergei Fedorov was the reason that I got into hockey. In the summer of 1991, my middle school friend Joe Kim kept on telling me about this great Russian player on the Red Wings who was blazing fast and tremendously talented.
So I started collecting hockey cards over the summer, and as I said yesterday, my dad took me to that pivotal exhibition game against Toronto on September 22nd, 1991 that sold me on hockey fandom.
Sergei scored one of the goals during that game, and he scored a hell of a lot more during his 13-year tenure with the Red Wings, dazzling fans, driving equipment managers crazy, and displaying his skill set and unbelievably high level of natural athletic talent. Fedorov wasn’t a player, he was a phenomenon, and a superstar whose ego was part of the package.
Today, the Red Wings announced that they’re retiring Sergei Fedorov’s #91 after a long, long wait on January 12th, 2026. The Red Wings’ media corps knew before the announcement, so they’ve already weighed in on Fedorov’s complicated legacy as a Red Wing for 13 years and then…Elsewhere…
So there was bad blood between Fedorov and the organization for a long time, even after the Winter Classic alumni game at Comerica Park, even after Fedorov was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015, for a very long time, honestly.
Whatever the issues were have been at least partially forgiven, and we’re going to see #91 head up to the rafters when the Carolina Hurricanes come to town on the 12th of January, but EliteProspects’ Sean Shapiro addressed the elephant in the room on his Substack:
