The Detroit Red Wings began their post-Four Nations Face-Off schedule with a matinee game against the Minnesota Wild, kicking off a back-to-back slate of games (with a Sunday tilt against the Ducks squeezed into Detroit’s schedule) between the two teams.
On Saturday afternoon, the Red Wings lost a matinee that stung.
Detroit took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Alex DeBrincat, a 2-0 lead 5:41 into the 2nd on a disputed goal by Dylan Larkin, and after Vinnie Hinostroza tipped home a 2-1 goal, Lucas Raymond made it 3-1 early in the 3rd on the power play…
But Matt Boldy chipped into the lead at 13:07, Marcus Foligno tied the game at 18:29, and in overtime, Marco Rossi raced out of the penalty box, fanned on his shot on Cam Talbot, and Talbot fanned on his save, affording the Wild a 4-3 OT win at 3:35 of OT.
This was a penalty-filled game full of heavy hits, including one in which Andrew Copp injured his right arm trying to elbow Matt Boldy up high, and Detroit…
Just didn’t have its details right. The work ethic was fine, the fit and finish was not. So they got burned.
In pregame warmups, Cam Talbot led the Red Wings out onto the ice at Little Caesars Arena, and Marc-Andre Fleury led the Wild onto the visitors’ end:

And the Wings announced their “Kids’ Day” lineup just before game time:
Today's lineup! #LGRW pic.twitter.com/0JEjtePLUr
— Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) February 22, 2025
The starters and scratches were as follows:

In the 1st period, the Wild started Matt Boldy, Marco Rossi and Mats Zuccarello up front, with Jake Middleton and Brock Faber on defense, and Marc-Andre Fleury in goal;
The Red Wings started Lucas Raymond, Dylan Larkin and Marco Kasper up front, with Ben Chiarot and Moritz Seider on defense, and Cam Talbot in goal.
Rossi and Kasper facing off may be the first time that two Austrians were in their respective teams’ starting lineups.
Larkin and Rossi drew in for the opening draw, and the Wings marginally won it back to Chiarot, who was supported by Raymond. Seider chipped, Fleury reversed, and Larkin got a shot that just went wide, Chiarot held the rebound in and Kasper and Larkin worked it to Seider and Chiarot; the Wings could not get a shot on net, and the Wild went the other way;
Minnesota fired a shot wide with traffic in front of Talbot, and Detroit changed lines 53 seconds in.
DeBrincat, Copp and Tarasenko came out and pushed the puck deep, reset at center, with Johansson and Edvinsson sending a puck into DeBrincat for a dump-in, but Detroit did not chase, and instead, the Wild forced Talbot to make a stop-the-flow save at the side of the net.
FYI regarding Copp:

The Wings won the defensive zone faceoff, but the Wild chipped the puck back into the zone, Holl sprung Rasmussen but he was stood up at center, and Gustafsson sent the puck up to Rasmussen, who sent a backhand in on Fleury, who made an easy stop 2:09 into the 1st.
Compher, Veleno and Berggren came out and won the offensive zone faceoff to Chiarot and Seider, who reversed the flow, Chiarot was blocked, Seider got a slithery shot in on Fleury, and a scrum began behind the net, with Compher at its center.
At 2:28, Veleno drew in for a left-side faceoff, Berggren put a shot off Fleury’s stick, and the Wild cleared to center, Chiarot and Berggren pushed the puck back up the ice, and Detroit chipped and changed at 2:52, completing their 4-line rotation.
Simon Edvinsson tripped Trenin and Edvinsson was tripped in retaliation, yielding boos from the crowd and yells from the bench;
Then Talbot made a good stop on a point shot from Minnesota, the Boldy line retained the puck and Rossi was stifled by Talbot on the blocker side;
Detroit had more difficulty getting into the Wild zone in no small part because Fleury was active in playing the puck and serving as an on-ice coach, as he is wont to do…
The Wild were dominating possession and control of the puck, but they iced the puck at 4:43, and the Wild won their d-zone draw, affording themselves an easy clear vs. the Rasmussen line.
Kane set up Rasmussen for a chip, but Soderblom could not hold, so the Wings regrouped at center, and Rasmussen was set up by Chiarot for a good slot chance with 4 Wild players around him at 5:30;
The Wings continued to look a little flat, however…Which was to be expected.
In a last-man-back situation, Trenin red Edvinsson going for the puck in the corner and lost the puck to Minnesota, and Gustafsson made a turnover, but Berggren helped his Swedish teammates clear the zone at 6:15;
Minnesota streaked in as Boldy was stifled by Talbot soon after, and Larkin fed Chiarot for a centering pass that the Wild were able to block from getting to Raymond or Kasper;
Faber then charged to Detroit’s net almost unchallenged, and Talbot made a big stop at 7:27.
After the TV timeout, DeBrincat lost a d-zone draw, but blocked a shot, and Edvinsson and Johansson worked the puck up ice, where Tarasenko made a steal and COPP FED DEBRINCAT FOR A BACKHAND GOAL TO GIVE THE WINGS A 1-0 LEAD AT 7:54.

The goal read DeBrincat (25) from Copp (13) at 7:54 of the 1st. Backhand shot.
On the bump-up shift, Kane streaked up the left wing side and challenged Fleury, who made a strong stop;
As play continued, Seider made a STRONG hit on Middleton at the Wings’ blueline, and that afforded Talbot an easy glove stop from 60 feet out;
The Wild were quite happy firing long shots at the net and then cycling down low, however, and they were winning a lot of board battles for possession of the puck, so the Rasmussen line and the Edvinsson pair got held in by Khusnutdinov and the Wild, forcing Talbot to make a good stop at 10:36.
After the TV timeout, the Wild nearly sprung Hinostroza on a breakaway pass, they held the puck in the offensive zone, and Marcus Johansson cycled to Faber for Eriksson Ek, and he fanned on a slot chance that could have been deadly.
Talbot made another seal-and-stop-the-play save soon after, at 12:03, and the Wild were leading in shots 8-5, then 9-5 after Rasmussen lost a faceoff and former Wing Jon Merrill sent a shot into the belly of the Red Wings’ goaltender.
The Wings’ urgency was there, but their fit and finish were off, and so Detroit was incredibly lucky to have a 1-0 lead as the 13:00 mark hit, and Yakov Trenin was tripped by Gustafsson, who got away with one;
After a set of shots by the Wild, Raymond did a nice job of dekeing and dangling into the Wild zone and putting a shot off Fleury’s shoulder, and that was the Wings’ 7th of the period;
The Copp line kind of struggled to get the puck to settle down at 4:45, and as the 15:00 mark passed, the Wild’s fine neutral zone play yielded passes plucked off and a line change of sorts from the Wings, who reunited Compher and Kane, with Berggren on the other wing.
So Rasmussen, Soderblom and Veleno played alongside one another, and they gavve up a strong set of plays against the Eriksson Ek line, but they were able to close down the slot, and Detroit escaped a strong Wild shift with little harm inflicted upon the team;
Talbot made a good stop off a shot from the right wing half boards with 2:29 left in the 1st, and Seider and Chiarot got little help from the Compher line, but Seider made sure that Liam Ohgren could not screen Talbot as he faced a bomb of a shot from the Wild’s point.
Talbot then made a HUGE stop with 1:50 remaining, preventing a side-of-the-net tap-in by Foligno…
After Raymond and Kasper were unable to convert on an exchange that Kasper bumbled, the Copp line came out, and Seider got off a great chance that Fleury stifled;
Hinostroza then made a TREMENDOUS PASS TO MARCUS JOHANSSON, and TALBOT MADE A HUGE STOP TO RETAIN THE LEAD FOR DETROIT.

In the 2nd period, Larkin drew in for the opening faceoff vs. Rossi and tied it up again, but the Wild pushed the muck puck forward, and went offside only 7 seconds in…
So they got an offensive zone faceoff at the faceoff dot? That was a strange call by the refs…
Anyway, Larkin won the next faceoff, and Kasper and Raymond and Larkin cycled, Larkin sent a long shot in on Fleury, who made a tremendous stop on Marco Kasper, and Faber cleared the puck…
Seider blasted a Wild player in the neutral zone, and then Seider blocked Faber from taking a shot at the side of the Wings’ net…
The Wild were really playing well, stride-for-stride, against the Wings, spending more time in Detroit’s end than Detroit spent in Minnesota’s end.
Berggren, Compher and Kane got the cycle going and Berggren tipped a Kane pass just wide of Fleury some 2:30 into the 2nd, and the Wings at least got a line change and forced the Wild to ice the puck on their exchange;
Raymond then walked around the offensive zone, fed Chiarot and Seider, they walked the line and Chiarot’s long shot off the side of the net yielded a give-and-go between Larkin and Seider and a CROSSBAR by Raymond.
Veleno then got a TREMENDOUS wraparound chance, but Fleury made a stop on Soderblom at the side of the net, flopping and flailing, and a nice pick by Rasmussen yielded a good grinding shift by the Rasmussen line, which pestered the Wild defense.
And the first penalty of the game went to Detroit as Marco Rossi was called for hooking at 5:05.
On the power play, Larkin took the opening faceoff, won it to Kane, he lateralled to Raymond left wing side, Larkin blased a slot shot wide, Seider and Raymond exchanged with DeBrincat, back to Raymond to DeBrincat, to Raymond to Seider, shot blockered away, Raymond rebound for Larkin to Seider, Raymond to DEBRINCAT who thought he scored, but the puck went off the crossbar at 5:41.
The “goal” was reviewed, but the call on the ice was “no goal,” even though Dylan Larkin jabbed the rebound into the net, and the review was…DYLAN LARKIN SCORING THE 2-0 GOAL by JAMMING the loose puck in behind Fleury.

Larkin (24) from DeBrincat (23) and Raymond (39) at 5:41 of the 2nd, 2-0 Detroit. Loose puck jam-in.
Beat writer complains:
Good goal for Larkin, but that is baloney. Brenk is pointing good goal, horn goes off, so everybody stops playing, including most importantly, Fleury.
— Michael Russo (@RussoHockey) February 22, 2025
So first goal comes soon after Red Wings get away with clearly throwing the puck, second goal after that mess
Anyway, the Wings led in shots 7-1 at the 6-minute mark, but the Wild raced up the other way against the Larkin line and Justin Holl was called for tripping at 7:09.
On the penalty-kill, the Wild won the puck to Faber, Boldy and Zuccarello cycled with Faber, down low it went to Hinostroza, Faber and Boldy worked the puck and ZUccarello could not hold the zone;
Veleno, Compher, Seider and Chiarot then watched Boldy send a long shot in and Hinostroza tipped the puck over Talbot and then in behind Talbot to make it 2-1.

Hinostroza scored at 8:05 from Boldy. Power play goal, tip-in, 2-1 Detroit.
The Wild then really got in on the forecheck and got their physical game going, vexing the Red Wings and pinning Detroit to the boards, so the Wings had to do their best and Khusnutdinov hit the post 8:15 in, sending a long shot over Talbot’s glove, and Detroit was really on its heels…
Talbot made a nice stop off Drew Shore on a Wild 3-on-2, with the Wild generating shots on goal…
COPP got a great shot off on Fleury from DeBrincat at 10:40, and Fleury made a huge stop…
But the Wild kept pressing, and Minnesota could only be stopped by Spurgeon blasting a heavy shot over the glass and out at 11:19.
As play continued, the Wild were really dominating possession and control, while the Wings did a fair amount of standing around and watching the Wild cycle in Detroit’s zone, with an occasional clear or delayed offside affording Detroit some rare breathing room.
The Rasmussen line did a good job of cycling for Detroit in the offensive end of the ice, however, and they crashed and banged some bodies some 12:50 into the 2nd, but the Wild were able to survive Freddy Gaudreau losing a stick;
Soderblom made a good shot block with his, um, parts, too…
Marco Kasper was able to generate a shot that Fleury sticked away from the goal line;
At the other end, Trenin blasted a shot on Cam Talbot, who made a good stop, and the teams scrummed in the corner;
With the Wild doing a good job of shutting down the Larkin line, and the Rossi line plain old having a good defensive game, the Wings tried to get Berggren, Compher and Kane loose against lesser lines, but that line had some hiccups in the offensive zone;
Seider set up Berggren for a fine little shot on Fleury, and then Kane set up Rasmussen for crease tap-in that Fleury stifled;
On the next exchange, Kane fed it to the blueline, Fleury made a TREMENDOUS stop and then he stopped SODERBLOM’s rebound with 3:56 left in the 2nd.

When play resumed after the TV timeout, Compher helped Kane win a faceoff (Kane does not take faceoffs), Johansson and Edvinsson sustained a cycle, Berggren fed Kane and he just missed Berggren’s slot set-up, Edvinsson and Kane generated a shot on goal, Compher was tripped…
And the Wild got away with one…
As did Johansson on a Wild player in the defensive end.
The crowd became quite restless, and as it buzzed, Veleno and Soderblom fed Rasmussen for a TREMENDOUS chance that Fleury stopped again…
Veleno then got his slot chance that Fleury stopped, Gustafsson and Veleno fed Soderblom for a blocked chance, Raymond came on the ice and deked, but was double-teamed…
And Detroit was suddenly all over the Wild.
Talbot had to make a good stop on a point shot against, however, and Raymond was dumped by Boldy at center ice from behind, sans call there…
Finally, Copp could not clear the defensive zone, but ALEX DEBRINCAT DELIVERED A GIGANTIC HIT ON FABER AND THE WILD WENT NUTS, WITH MATT BOLDY CHARGING IN FROM THE POINT TO ATTEMPT TO ATTACK DEBRINCAT and the ENTIRE Red Wings roster…

And Andrew Copp got injured hitting Boldy with an elbow to the head, leaving the ice with an arm injury.
Boldy sat with 20 seconds remaining, getting 2-and-2 for roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct, but Copp also got a roughing penalty.
On the power play, the Wings lost the initial draw, and Seider, Raymond and Larkin could not connect, affording the Wild a 2nd period exit down 2-1 and 1:41 of PP time left for Detroit to start the 3rd.

Sadly, the Minnesota Wild challenged for goaltender interference, and the call on the ice was a goal, but DeBrincat slithered into the crease, so it was close.
It was a Tomas Holmstrom-type call, because DeBrincat did sneak into the crease by a couple of inches, but he didn’t make contact with Fleury.
The review took a while, and they called it a goal on the ice. Raymond (22) from Larkin (28) and Kane (20) at 22 seconds of the 3rd, 3-1. Snap shot goal from the slot.
So Minnesota took a penalty for delay of game at 22 seconds of the 3rd…
On the power play, the Wings won the opening faceoff and Larkin, Kane and DeBrincat could not connect, so the Wild cleared the zone;
Talbot set up DeBrincat to Kane for Larkin blocked off, DeBrincat could not hold the puck in deep in the zone, and so Talbot set up Seider for a drop to Raymond to Larkin tripped no call, and the Wild cleared the zone again…
The 2nd unit came out at 1:30 with Gustafsson setting up Tarasenko, who was blocked off and stopped…
Gustafsson set up and dropped to Berggren, working with Rasmussen, but again, the Wild cleared as Khusnutdinov out-battled;
Then Rasmussen and Berggren could not connect with Gustafsson, Talbot worked it up ice, and Detroit just rolled a line onto the ice as Kasper, Veleno and Soderblom battled but could not stop the Wild from skating up 3-on-2, yielding a seal from Talbot with 17:15 left.
As play continued, Kasper remained between Berggren and Soderblom;
Compher and Tarasenko were joined by DeBrincat;
Eriksson Ek fired a shot just over the glove of Talbot on a pass from Jonas Brodin at about 4:00;
And the Wings announced the following…
UPDATE: Andrew Copp will not return to today's game.
— Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) February 22, 2025
Before Minnesota was awarded a power play as Rasmussen was shoved into Fleury at 4:53 by Bogosian, and the refs saw red goaltender interference.
On the PK, Detroit won the initial defensive zone draw;
Minnesota raced up and dropped to Faber and Zuccarello at the point, Boldy to Faber shot by Zuccarello stopped Talbot, then Hinostroza was blocked off by Compher who cleared the zone;
Talbot stopped a dump-in with his stick, and Edvinsson was dumped, so Kasper and Veleno worked vs. Boldy, Eriksson Ek, Zuccarello, Hinostroza and Faber…
The Wild got a little too cutet for the most part, but Talbot made a big stop on Hinostroza from the right wing side;
Holl made a good block on Eriksson Ek;
Talbot made a nice stop on Eriksson Ek;
And the PK expired, with Rasmussen battling Faber as he walked in for a shot that was blocked.
Minnesota had hemmed the Wings in for a minute, but INSTEAD RASMUSSEN found a way to race in on a mini-breakaway, only to be STIFLED by Fleury;
8 minutes into the 3rd, Minnesota led in shots 27-25.
As play continued, Soderblom, Kane and Larkin worked together on an improvided line, and Talbot made a good right pad stop on Trenin, and Albert Johansson cleared a Marcus Johansson attempt to sustain possession;
Then the Wings and Wild began to trade rushes some 10:00 into the 3rd, which is never something that you want to see;
The Wild were targeting DeBrincat, too…
Larkin, Kasper and Raymond helped Johansson send a bomb in on Fleury that was blockered away…
And ZUCCARELLO was STONED by Talbot with 8:18 remaining, jamming pucks in the crease.
When play resumed, Middleton headed to the penalty box at 11:51 for tripping Moritz Seiderr, and Detroit headed to the PP.
On the power play, Seider helped dump the puck deep and then hold the puck in as Raymond and DeBrincat played give-and-go, Larkin was unable to stuff a Kane pass, Kane cycled as Gaudreau lost his stick…
Kane walked in, slid it back and Eriksson Ek stopped Seider, and he stole the puck from Seider, skated in on a breakaway, and Talbot stopped Eriksson Ek…
But Seider had to take a penalty, and Larkin got into trouble for pushing Eriksson Ek after he shoved the Red Wings’ Talbot.
Larkin sat for roughing, Eriksson Ek for slashing, and Seider got a slashing penalty as well at 12:43 of the 3rd.
So the Wings and Wild would play 4-on-4 for 1:09, and then the Wild would have a 51-second power play.
Compher lost the defensive zone draw and the Wild’s Brodin drew a penalty as Gaudreau was blocked off by Talbot, Johansson was blocked…
And on the delayed penalty, Matt Boldy walked into the slot, coming off the bench, and ripped the puck through Talbot to make it 3-2 with 6:53 remaining in regulation.

Boldy scored his 22nd from Marcus Johansson at 13:07, 3-2. Slap shot goal in the slot.
Tarasenko took a high-sticking minor at 13:07 as well, giving the Wild another power play.
As the 4-on-4 continued, Seider came out of the box and peeled back after a quick offensive foray to regain possession, Rasmussen chipped as the PK began, and Faber worked it into the Wings’ zone, Holl and Chiarot watched Boldy BLAST a shot into Talbot, and the Wings cleared the zone;
Hinostroza then skated back in, Boldy worked it to Rossi, Faber sent a shot into the slot and Talbot held the line, a Wild player lost a stick and the Wild brought Johansson out, Rossi sent it to Boldy at the point, and Tarasenko came out of the penalty box as the WINGS KILLED THE PP AGAINST.
As play continued, and the clock began to tick down, Talbot had to make a couple of big saves, and Bogosian sent some shots wide;
Detroit was able to change with 2:48 left and the Wild chipped and Detroit chased, Compher chipped…
But the Wild regained control and dumped and chased, with 2:20 left, Fleury left for the bench, and the Wild cycled 6 on 5…
Talbot made a good stop, but Rossi cycled for Zuccarello to Faber, to Boldy at the point, to Zuccarello to Faber center point, to Zuccarello LW half, through the crease but not in, with 1:35 left Boldy ripped a shot toward the net and Zucarello was stopped but Marcus Foligno was there at the side of the Wings’ net to make it 3-3 with 1:31 remaining.

As the announcers gushed over the Wild’s rally from a 2-goal deficit, Detroit looked to at least get the game to overtime…
But the Wild were in control of the puck, so they chipped and chased, Talbot cycled it around the boards but the Wild regained control, and Detroit desperately cleared, Minnesota chipped, Detroit chased and Rasmussen tipped a puck from distance on Fleury, and Minnesota tipped the puck out of the zone, ensuring overtime.
The third period ended with the teams tied 3-3.

IN OVERTIME…
Larkin, Gustafsson and Raymond started, but the Wild won the faceoff, Faber, Boldy and Eriksson Ek worked the puck up ice, and slowly but surely gained the offensive blueline…
Eriksson Ek broke in a bit but Larkin hooked him enough to stop him…
Faber worked it back as Raymond challenged the Wild defenseman, and Faber won the war;
Detroit changed 50 seconds in, but Gustafsson was still on tthe ice, and Boldy fed Rossi, he worked it out to Boldy, he changed, so Spurgeon took it to Rossi, through the middle to Zuccarello shot stopped, Kane tripped no call…YES PENALTY CALL.
The Wild were furious as Rossi was called for tripping with 3:38 left in OT.
ON THE 4-on-3 PP:
Larkin, Seider, Kane and Raymond drew in for the faceoff, vs. Eriksson Ek, Larkin was waved out of the faceoff and Kane came in, he got it to Raymond for Seider, Seider for Kane rt wing low, walked out to the slot, shot NO shot #2 NO and Ek cleared…
Seider raced up for Raymond right side looking for Seider point circling back walking to Raymond lw side sticks stops looks sticks shot wide and Eriksson Ek clears easily.
