Per Michigan State University:
East Lansing, Mich. — Michigan State sophomore netminder Trey Augustine (South Lyon, Mich.) has been announced as one of 10 semifinalists for two major national awards on Thursday, Feb. 13. Augustine is among the semifinalists for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) James E. Sullivan Award, which annually honors the top amateur athlete in the United States, as well as the Mike Richter Award, given annually to the top netminder in college hockey.
The AAU Sullivan Award honors the most outstanding collegiate, Olympic or similar level athlete in the United States. It has been presented annually by the AAU since 1930 as a salute to founder and past president of the Amateur Athletic Union, and pioneer in amateur sports, James E. Sullivan. Based on the qualities of leadership, character, sportsmanship, and the ideals of amateurism, the AAU Sullivan Award goes far beyond athletic accomplishments and honors those who have shown strong moral character.
Augustine is one of two repeat Richter semifinalists from 2024, and is joined on the list by Albin Boija, Maine, Matt Davis, Denver; Jacob Fowler, Boston College; Thomas Gale, Holy Cross; Josh Kotai, Augustana; Simon Latkoczy, Omaha; Cameron Rowe, Western Michigan; Alex Tracy, Minnesota State; Lawton Zacher, Brown. The semifinalists and winner are chosen by a panel of voters from across the hockey community. The panel includes coaches from each conference as well as members of the national media, professional scouts and representatives of USA Hockey.
The winners of both will be announced in mid-April. The Richter Award ceremony will be held on Friday, April 11 in St. Louis, Mo. as part of the “Friday at the Frozen” event in which the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, the Richter, the Tim Taylor Award (National Rookie of the Year) and the Hockey Humanitarian Award are presented to winners in front of the assembled college hockey community between the NCAA semifinals (April 10) and finals (April 12). The 95th AAU Sullivan Award Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2025 at the New York City Athletic Club.
AAU selected 39 semifinalists, which includes premier collegiate athletes, Olympic champions, and paralympic stars. The one-week voting period to determine the finalists will open to the public on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 and will close on February 25, 2025. The complete list of semifinalists can be found here.
