The Detroit Red Wings faced a stiff test in battling the 15-8-and-2 New Jersey Devils on Friday afternoon.
The Red Wings hoped to make hay while the sun still shined upon its 4-of-5-games home stand, and the Devils and Sunday’s opponent, the 11-7-and-3 Vancouver Canucks, would provide the most difficult opponents (at least in theory).
On Friday afternoon, Cam Talbot gave up 5 goals on 31 shots against in his 500th game…
And the Red Wings learned a costly lesson, giving up 3 power play goals in 3 power plays against, scoring only 1 power play goal in 4 PP’s for, and surrendering a 2-0 lead in the 1st period, then a 3-2 lead in the 2nd period, all en route to a 5-4 loss to the Devils.
The Red Wings cannot lose the special teams battle any more–we know that–and they were far too passive in the 2nd, period, where the Wings were out-shot 17-6.
Ultimately, bad special teams play and passive play killed Detroit in this very long, winding game, and the Wings will have to salvage the home stand with a win against the difficult Canucks on Sunday.
In pregame warmups, Jacob Markstrom led the Devils out to the ice at Little Caesars Arena…

Statistics: Here are the Game Summary and Event Summary:

0 for 3 on the PK alone cost them this game. At this point, it’s completely unacceptable. Sure, some of it is personnel, but the focus here is on coaching.
I also want to point out one other play in what was a pretty frustrating game. 9 mins or so to go in the 3rd, Wings down a goal. Fischer is fed in the slot and gets a great shot off that’s stopped.
OK, fine, great chance and they don’t all go in, we get it.
But watch what happens next. It’s not just Fischer who’s offside: Copp is actually lollygagging even further behind him on the far side of the ice from the camera, making absolutely zero effort to clear the zone even though by this point the Wings have the puck again and are attacking at center ice.
This leads to the offside call. IN THE THIRD, IN A ONE GOAL GAME.
It’s past time plays like this lead to consequences for veteran players. This play was also absolutely unacceptable, just one of so many that nobody ever talks about. Where’s the accountability? Where’s the effort? I would’ve tried hard to be onside in a goddamn beer league game than Copp did in a one goal NHL game on a team that’s clearly going to have to scratch and claw for every standings point to even SNIFF the playoffs!
This effort problem…this just one example of an ongoing issue. If Lalonde is unwilling or unable to use harsher techniques like scratches and demotions to get players to wake up, he’s gotta go.
The PK situation alone suggests new coaching is warranted, but these zero effort plays have plagued this team all season. When is enough enough?
