The Detroit Red Wings hoped to rebound from a difficult Saturday loss to the Boston Bruins as they eyed a sweep of their 3-game season series with the New York Islanders on Monday night.
The 8-8-and-5 Islanders had a record that the 8-10-and-2 Red Wings may very well envy in that it contains more points due to fewer regulation time losses, and the name of the game on Monday night was going to be attempting to earn a regulation time win.
On Monday night, Detroit honestly looked like it was going to lose a sleepy, boring game for so much of the game that it was silly, despite Moritz Seider revoking Anders Lee’s opening tally with a blast of his own, and when Kyle Palmieri scored 7:42 into the 2nd, Detroit seemed doomed to lose another 2-1 game…
But Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond scored goals only 2:33 apart halfway through the 3rd, Simon Edvinsson’s empty netter sewed things up, and in between, a fine defensive performance and a tremendous 29-save performance by Alex Lyon salvaged a very necessary 4-2 victory.
In pregame warmups, the presumed goaltenders from today’s morning skate led their teams out to the ice at the UBS Arena:
#Isles Semyon Varlamov (3-3-2, 2.60 GAA, .903 save pct.) and #RedWings Alex Lyon (3-4-0, 2.85, .908) lead the teams onto the UBS Arena ice for warmups.

The starters and scratches were as follows:
In the 1st period, Copp drew in for the opening faceoff opposite Pageau, with Rasmussen and Fischer on his flanks, and Chiarot and Petry were on defense.
The puck was dropped at center ice, and the Isles tied the draw up and chipped it into the Red Wings’ zone, where Petry gave it up to Horvat, the Isles’ D went D to D and fired a shot wide, Pageau and Horvat cycled for Lee in the slot, but they were repelled, and the Wings cleared the puck out to center, Lyon tapped a long shot away at the hash marks, and Petry set up Edvinsson to dump the puck wide of Varlamov.
New York could not penetrate the Wings’ end, so Tarasenko, Larkin and Raymond cycled, Palmieri could not clear, Seider worked wide and cycled for Edvinsson and Larkin FED RAYMOND FOR AN OPEN NET THAT RAYMOND COULD NOT CONVERT UPON, Seider pinched in from the point and cycled around the boards but the Islanders cleared the puck 1:40 into the 1st.
Motte, Compher and DeBrincat then cycled as well, Cholowski and the Islanders cleared off Holl, up came Holmstrom, he pushed it back to the D and the Isles shot wide, Holl and Johansson set up with 2:30 gone and Detroit changed lines.
New York pressed hard and Lyon blocked a point shot wide of the goal with his toe, Chiarot cleared the zone and the Islanders set up in their own end.
Lyon tapped the Isles’ dump-in to Petry, he went to Chiarot and Chiarot backhanded the puck deep, but Tsyplakov and Nelson battled to center ice, Fischer and Copp battled away and the Wings’ D pushed the puck deep for Varlamov to play…
Edvinsson and Seider tried to feed Copp, Copp fed Fischer and that was stopped by Varlamov 4:10 into the 1st.
When the Wings pushed the puck deep, the Isles regrouped 3 on 2, and Lyon made a TREMENDOUS STOP sans stick, Nelson, Pageau and Lee cycled and Lee scored the game’s first goal on a one-timer from the middle slot at 4:35.

Lee scored at 4:35 from Pageau and Dobson. 1-0 Islanders.
When the Red Wings worked the puck deep on the bump-up shift, the Islanders parried them back to center ice, Motte, DeBrincat and Compher menaced the Isles’ net, and Varlamov held on for a faceoff at 5:21.
Larkin and company came over the boards, lost an offensive zone draw and Hutton and the Isles skated into Detroit’s zone, Lyon blockered away a slot shot, and Lyon lost his stick again;
New York regrouped in its zone, skated into Detroit’s end, and Pageau, Horvat and Lee cycled, Seider and Edvinsson regruped and dumped the puck in for Berggren, Veleno and Kasper, who were pinned to the boards, and Wahlstrom and the Isles pushed into the Wings’ end.
Detroit recoiled and dumped the puck down ice, but Varlamov gave it away to Fischer, MacLean stopped Fischer and took over as the Isles worked up 3-on-3, Rasmussen reversed flow, Copp stole the puck to Chiarot it went and Tsyplakov battled the puck out of trouble.
At center Rasmussen pinched on a turnover and cycled around the back boards, but Palmieri pushed the Islanders into Detroit’s end and Raymond took over as the Isles changed at 7:45.
Detroit attempted to sustain possession in the offensive zone, but instead, Johansson was chased into his own end, Pulock and Cholowski went D to D for Cizikas, Pulock walked deep, dropped and a Red Wings defenseman was able to block the Isles’ shot.
DeBrincat’s line changed as Holl and Johansson waited, they pushed Rasmussen deep as he went off and Larkin battled in the Isles’ end, Tarasenko helped Seider reverse, Larkin centered for Raymond, who was blocked off, and the Isles had another 3 on 2 stifled by the Wings’ backchecking forwards.
New York’s Hutton set up at 9:23 of the 1st and skated out to center ice, lateralled to a teammate, and Detroit pushed back but iced the puck at 9:42.
The Islanders led 6-0 in shots as they worked an offensive zone draw back to the points, pushed the puck deep, and Detroit’s Veleno, Kasper and Petry took over, pushed the puck deep into New York territory, and Berggren blubbed a pass back to Petry, so Detroit changed at 10:21 and the Isles’ Palmieri broke away, gave the puck to Pulock battling Seider, Nelson centered for Nelson, Edvinsson had to steal a loose puck and he chipped so that the Red Wings could change.
11:00 into the 1st period, the islanders were stifled at center as Motte stole the puck from Engvall, Detroit worked the puck to the Isles’ line, but were stifled, and Johansson and Holl had to help bail out DeBrincat, Compher and Motte.
With 11:45 gone, the Larkin line came over the boards, Horvat and Pageau gave up a 3 on 2 that was quickly stifled, and New York pressed hard against Seider and Edvinsson, but Larkin charged in himself, was stopped, and the Islanders cleared and the Wings changed.
Kasper, Petry and Berggren cycled, Berggren was dumped heavily, and Detroit regrouped, with Kasper chipping, chasing, and Varlamov and the Islanders setting up in their own zone.
The Isles dumped and chased, Detroit regrouped with Veleno dumping the puck in, Varlamov played it to Copp and then Fischer, he fed the point and Moritz Seider blasted a slap shot through Varlamov to tie the game 1-1 at 13:25.

Seider scored from Fischer and Copp at 13:25 to make it 1-1.
On the post-goal shift, Detroit lost a deep offensive zone draw, the Islanders pressed to take the lead, and Holmstrom sent a shot wide, regrouped, Larkin trailed and tailed Holmstrom and he fell, drawing a penalty on Dylan Larkin.
At 14:03, Dylan Larkin sat for tripping.
On the penalty kill, Compher dialed in for the opening faceoff vs. Pageau at the Wings’ left circle, and the Isles won the draw to Pulock, Pageau fired a shot wide, and the Red Wings cleared the puck down the ice;

Dobson worked the puck up ice and Palmieri chipped and chased, New York could not hold the line and Motte nearly broke away, but was stopped by Tsyplakov at the Isles’ line.
New York then tried to break in and the Islanders’ Tsyplakov walked deep, dropped to Palmieri, Nelson found Tsyplakov, who was ran by Petry, and there was a loose puck in the slot but Edvinsson held the fort;
Cholowski sent Nelson a pass that Lyon stopped, the Islanders could not score during the power play…
But they cycled in the Wings’ zone, Fischer, Larkin and Detroit took control with 3:35 remaining, and Larkin cycled and circled before sending a 3-line pass to Tarasenko. He battled the Isles’ defense and they charged deep but Tarasenko cleared the zone, DeBrincat sent a shot in that was stopped by Varlamov…
Chiarot and Seider went D to D and shot and Varlamov stopped a shot with 3:00 left in the 1st.
Kasper drew in for a post-TV timeout draw, won it to the defense, and Holl’s shot was blocked and sent down the ice, and the Islanders were called for a penalty as MacLean sat for slashing at 17:15.
On the power play, Detroit’s Larkin drew in for a faceoff won to Seider, Raymond worked it down low and Larkin fed Seider for a wide shot, Raymond cycled to Seider, he fed Raymond and back it went, DeBrincat fed Raymond and Seider blew his interception, so the Wings regrouped at center, were stifled, and Nelson skated up and chipped deep against the Wings’ top unit.
Detroit really saw the Isles target Seider as Raymond, Tarasenko and Larkin battled deep, DeBrincat fed Edvinsson, he cycled for DeBrincat and DeBrincat was stopped and the Islanders cleared the puck.
Edvinsson set up with 32 left in the PP and the Wings broke in offside?
No, the referees called Edvinsson for interference with 27 left in the PP, and 1:11 left in the 1st.
The Islanders won the 4-on-4 draw in the offensive zone, George and Pulock cycled, Veleno and Kasper pushed the Isles back into their own zone, and New York began a 1:34 PP as Cholowski walked in, Lee dropped to Dobson, Lyon made a good stop and Detroit cleared the zone with 20 left in the 1st…
Dobson walked up ice, he was reversed by Larkin, the Isles’ Pageau fed Cholowski and he hit the outside of the post and that was the 1st period.

Tarasenko got a shot off on Varlamov before Dobson and the Islanders cleared Detroit’s foray into New York territory, and the Isles chipped and changed at 1:56.
Detroit’s Berggren chipped and Veleno chased, as did Kasper, but the Islanders iced the puck, negated the icing by getting to the puck first, and Johansson was bothered, Kasper helped and sent the puck to the line, where Berggren could not clear the zone, but he managed to dump the puck down ice so that the Red Wings could change.
DeBrincat fell vs. Matt Martin and the Wings changed lines, with Chiarot setting up in the Wings’ end and affording Petry an exchange before dumping and changing.

Detroit regrouped at center ice and went offside, so Compher’s line came out and lost the offensive zone line draw, and the Islanders went offside at Detroit’s line, affording the teams another neutral-zone faceoff.
