The Detroit Red Wings may have glimpsed their future as they eyed the 9-9-and-3 Boston Bruins on Saturday night. The Bruins fired coach Jim Montgomery on Monday, and are beginning to revise their roster under coach Joe Sacco.
As the Atlantic Division continues to pull away from the Red Wings, there’s definitely urgency for the 8-9-and-2 Red Wings to sort out their difficulties internally, lest they share the Bruins’ fate.
On Saturday night, the Red Wings played a really great 40 minutes of hockey, but they lost their “oomph” in the 3rd, and that was enough to drop a 2-1 decision to the Boston Bruins.
Detroit went 0-for-3 on the PP, which did not help, but Cam Talbot stopped 27 fine saves, Raymond got a goal and Larkin got his 300th assist, and the Wings should not have been out-shot 13-4 in the third period in which they had a power play and a lengthy stretch of 6-on-4 time, in which they hit two crossbars behind Jeremy Swayman.
But there is progress here, and the Islanders await on Monday.
In the pregame warmups, Jeremy Swayman led the Bruins out to the ice at Little Caesars Arena…

The starters and scratches were as follows:
In the 1st period, Larkin and Zacha drew in for the opening faceoff at center ice, with Raymond and Tarasenko on Larkin’s flanks, and Edvinsson and Seider matched up against the Pastrnak line. Talbot and Swayman started in goal.
Larkin tied up the draw and Seider chipped and Detroit chased, but Boston cycled out of the zone and Edvinsson was the last man back.
Boston regrouped at center, dumped, chased, and Seider gave it up to Pastrnak, but Talbot made a HUGE STOP in the slot, and Detroit pushed back the other way to force Swayman to make a stop.
Kasper mucked up the next faceoff and Kane and Petry exchanged, Kane fired off a Bruins leg, Petry and Chiarot tried to send a puck on net but it went wide, and Detroit regrouped at its blueline 1:10 into teh game.
DeBrincat, Kane and Compher cycled with Gustafsson, Motte fed Berggren Gustafsson nearly scored and the B’s cleared their zone.
Detroit dumped in on Swayman, but the B’s pushed the Wings out to their blueline, and the Wings regrouped again…
Chiarot and Compher could not connect and the B’s broke out, Talbot reversed flow to Motte, Boston took over and backed into its zone, and the B’s chipped and changed at 2:30.
Chiarot walked to center, dumped, Lohrei and McAvoy reversed, Pastrnak carried in but Seider bumped him and skated out to center, Fischer got a shot off on Swayman, Edvinsson pinched, and Tarasenko dropped to a Bruin, and Raymond took over, reversing and finding Larkin behind the net. He saw Edvinsson back door and he tried to feed Tarasenko in front, but he could not.
Raymond then skated in and fired a shot on Swayman at 3:34.
The Wings lost the offensive zone faceoff, and the B’s negated their own icing play, forcing Kasper, Chiarot and Petry to battle down low before the B’s couldn’t hold the puck in.
At center, Kasper and Kane had trouble, so the B’s chipped and chased, centered teh puck to the blueline, and Talbot stopped Lindholm from the point.
Detroit then drew in for a defensive zone draw that Copp lost, Boston pushed the puck out front, and Rasmussen, Gustafsson and Holl back-checked, Copp fed Rasmussen for a break but Rasmussen was held up by Carlo, and Copp helped as did Fischer, but the B’s pushed the puck around the back boards and into center ice.
Holl and Berggren worked the puck deep into the B’s zone, but it rolled out of play, and Detroit regrouped at center, with Motte losing a faceoff and the B’s regrouping as they went offside;
So Chiarot carried the puck to the B’s line, they reset and skated into Detroit’s zone, and Petry iced the puck at 5:32.
The start to the game was rather mucky and somewhat sleepy.
Compher won a d-zone draw, Chiarot chipped and the B’s retained, with Talbot stopping a point shot with his glove.
Compher lost the next draw and the B’s cycled vs. Seider and Edvinsson, reversing to the point, but Detroit was able to clear the zone, and Boston regrouped as Detroit changed lines.

Motte, Compher, Chiarot and Petry came out as the 2nd unit, lost a blueline draw, and Boston skated in, worked the perimeter, and Motte raced away right wing side, he battled McAvoy and reversed.
Tyler Johnson took over behind his own net and skated out to center, Boston chipped, and chased,d but Seider, Fischer and Edvinsson were able to generate some offensive pressure on the PK.
With 20 seconds left on the PK, Geekie cycled to the line, Johnson sent a shot toward the net and he scored a goal as the puck hit someone in front–Moritz Seider–as the Bruins had 2 players crashing Talbot’s goal.

Compher lost another draw, however, and the B’s cleared the zone easily.
Talbot, Tarasenko, Kasper, Compher, Copp & company gave the puck up to Marchand, the B’s chipped the puck away, and the power play expired.
Tarasenko then walked the puck into a Bruin and wide, Chiarot and Gustafsson fired pucks into Swayman, and he held on at 11:10.
After a TV timeout, the Wings won the offensive zone draw to Gustafsson, he fired a puck wide, Holl fed Rasmussen, Gustafsson sent another blast toward the goal, but the B’s blocked Detroit off, and the Wings changed lines.
Gustafsson fed Fischer, he was blocked off, Petry reversed for Fischer, Chiarot held the line for Petry, he fired a shot near goal, and Detroit regrouped at center at 12:10.
Detroit pushed the puck deep but Swayman played it around, Boston regrouped, and McAvoy fed Marchand, the B’s chipped and changed themselves, and Larkin was held up, yielding an icing against.
Detroit won the d-zone draw and eventually cleared the zone, DeBrincat got a long shot in on Swayman, and Kane held the line with Kasper, Detroit bumped, Kane regrouped at center, and Seider and Edvinsson worked the puck to center.
Kasper and DeBrincat fed Kane on the right wing for a dump-and-change, Motte helped Gustafsson send the puck deep once, twice, and Detroit went offside with 13:45 gone in the 1st.
The Red Wings lost a faceoff at the offensive zone blueline but skated up and pushed the puck deep anyway, and when the B’s cleared, Detroit regrouped and forced the B’s to defend.
Motte fed Berggren for a pass that nearly became a breakaway…
The B’s chipped and chased,d Edvinsson battled and Copp helped push the puck out tand down, Rasmussen regrouped at center, he lateralled it to Edvinsson via Compher, and Rasmussen couldn’t back-door score.

Boston dumped and changed, DeBrincat, Kasper and Kane were stifled but regrouped, then lost control again.
Boston walked deep, Kasper flicked the puck off the glass and out, the B’s regrouped and attacked again, and Kasper could not clear, Geekie fed Pastrnak and Talbot made a HUGE stop.
