Red Wings-Islanders quick take: Late, ugly wins still count

The Detroit Red Wings attempted to rebound from an 1-2-and-1 road trip and a three-game winless streak as they hosted the 7-7-and-5 New York Islanders on Thursday evening.

As the Red Wings kicked off a stretch of 6 games to be played over the course of 11 nights, and a stretch in which they’ll play every other night until December 9th, the Wings neared the “quarter pole” of their season at 7-9-and-2, rather desperately needing to sort themselves out in order to turn their season around.

On Thursday night, the Red Wings “won ugly,” but they won, rallying in the 3rd period from a 1-0 deficit to defeat the New York Islanders 2-1. Jonatan Berggren scored at 15:14 and Lucas Raymond scored at 19:08 to give the Red Wings the victory, with Alex Lyon stopping 22 shots and Detroit taking 31 of their own.

With Boston coming in on Saturday, and the Islanders likely to be steamed on Monday in Long Island, the Wings needed this one, bad, and while some of the details were not elegant, the game counts as a win.

In the pregame warmups, Alex Lyon and Ilya Sorokin took to the ice at Little Caesars Arena to lead their teams out for their respective pregame skates…

Hello Irony Alert…

The teams dressed the following lineups…

The starters and scratches were as follows:

In the 1st period, after Pavel Datsyuk dropped a ceremonial faceoff at center ice…

The game got underway, with Bo Horvat drawing in opposite Andrew Copp for the opening faceoff:

Copp got tossed due to Rasmussen jumping in early, and Horvat won the draw to his D, who pushed the puck to the Wings’ blueline, but Detroit chipped, Fischer chased, the Wings worked the puck back to the blueline for Seider and Edvinsson, and Horvat nearly broke in 1-on-1 with Edvinsson, but the Islanders were called for a hand pass at 27 seconds of the 1st.

Larkin, Tarasenko and Raymond joined the fray and worked with Chiarot and Petry to cycle the puck down low, but the Islanders stripped the puck away from Detroit’s forwards, pushed the puck to the Red Wings’ line, regrouped, and Pulock centered for Tsyplakov, and Detroit attempted to get a home-run pass from DeBrincat to Kane…

And the Red Wings headed to a power play as Pulock got tagged for hooking at 1:18.

On the power play, Detroit started Larkin, DeBrincat, Raymond, Kane and Seider, and DeBrincat drew in, won the draw to Larkin going forward, and Kane cycled, but the Isles chipped and chased.

Seider walked deep himself and dropped to Raymond, Kane fired a long shot in on Sorokin sans screen, and he was stifled easily.

Larkin won the next draw, Kane, Raymond and Seider worked the perimeter to DeBrincat, back to Seider, and Sorokin made a stop;

Seider fed Kane right wing, and the Islanders cleared the puck easily;

1:00 into the PP, Kasper, Tarasenko and company were not able to penetrate the Islanders’ zone, so Gustafsson regrouped, fed Kasper, Tarasenko dropped to Gustafsson and he fired the puck off Simon Holmstrom, which went out to center ice.

The goal was credited to Simon Holmstrom from Curtis Mayfield at 5:51 of the 1st. 1-0 New York Islanders.

On the bump-up shift, the Islanders continued to press, but Copp, Chiarot and company dumped the puck in on Sorokin and the Wings hit their first TV timeout at 6:52.

When play resumed, the Larkin line worked the puck deep as Raymond fed Larkin and he centered it blindly, so the Isles skated up and in 3 on 2, Pageau cycled for the lien, Romano was blocked off, and Detroit broke out and changed as Sorokin stopped a very long Raymond shot.

The Kasper line took into the Isles’ zone, and New York chipped the puck down ice for an icing against at 7:47.

The Wings won the deep zone draw, but DeBrincat lost the puck and Detroit had to regroup at center.

The Islanders broke free on the next stretch of play, but Horvat blew out his chance, over-skating the puck, and Rasmussen, Copp and Fischer worked with Seider and Edvinsson to block off everything but a point shot by Cholowski;

  1. GM, you really sell short just what a disaster the Isles’ goal was for our usual suspect Gusty. just the ritual one goal a night this defense is gifting the other team.

    good win, they deserved it and they looked motivated.

  2. They don’t ask how….

    The tide will change on offence. Razor, Larks, Berger, Kasper, ADB are all playing like it’s a privilege to play in the NHL. Berger deserves more time on the ice. He’s getting boned by the cluster of inconsistent forwards.

    I’m hopeful Kane & Tara will turn things around.
