Red Wings-Rangers set-up and morning skate Tweets, part 1: Shesterkin starts for NYR; Rempe not playing

The Detroit Red Wings face the New York Rangers this evening (7 PM EDT on Bally Sports Detroit/MSG Network/NHL Network/97.1 FM), opening up a home-and-home series which will conclude on Thursday in Detroit.

The 1-and-1 Red Wings are coming off a 3-0 victory over the Nashville Predators on Saturday night, while the Rangers possess a 1-0-and-1 record thanks to a 6-5 overtime loss to Utah on Saturday.

This game is an NHL Network exclusive, so it will not air on streaming services tonight, and Thursday’s game is an ESPN+/Hulu exclusive, so that will be difficult to watch as well.

Per the New York Rangers’ game preview, the Wings will be skating uphill tonight:

The Rangers have earned at least one point in 11 of their last 12 games against Detroit (9-1-2) and 18 of their last 20 games against the Red Wings, dating back to Jan. 22, 2017 (13-2-5 record).

MLive’s Tyler Kuehl also notes that the Rangers are on a hell of a scoring streak to start the season:

While Talbot stood on his head, Detroit cannot allow some of the best teams in the league to have extended time in its zone.

The Rangers are certainly one of those teams. With players like Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider, the Blueshirts have one of the deeper offensive arsenals in the NHL. The Rangers began the 2024-25 season with a 6-0 drubbing of the Pittsburgh Penguins last Wednesday, but slipped up with an overtime loss to the Utah Hockey Club on Saturday night.

NHL.com posted a more optimistic factoid about the Red Wings ahead of tonight’s game…

Detroit Red Wings at New York Rangers (7 p.m. ET; BSDET, NHLN, MSG)

The Red Wings (1-1-0) and Rangers (1-0-1) will play twice in the next three days beginning Monday at Madison Square Garden. Forwards Alex DeBrincat (two goals, one assist) and Lucas Raymond (three assists) each have three points to lead Detroit. Artemi Panarin‘s four points (two goals, two assists) lead New York.

The Rangers hit the ice at MSG just around 10:20 AM:

Meanwhile, near the Red Wings’ locker room…

Etc. etc.:

Jonathan Quick usually starts against the Red Wings, so this is a bit of a surprise.
