Non-game-day group Tweets from practice: Raymond not practicing

The Red Wings’ game-day players skated on Little Caesars’ ice surface around 10:30 AM today, preparing for the Wings’ exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Penguins (7 PM EDT start on DetroitRedWings.com/PittsburghPenguins.com), and after the morning skate, Joe Veleno and Carter Mazur spoke with the media.

The non-game-day players took to the ice at 12:10 PM, per MLive’s Ansar Khan, and Lucas Raymond was not among them:

Red Wings driving forward as preseason continues

As we wait for the Red Wings’ second unit to practice, DetroitRedWings.com’s Jonthan Mills posted a preview of tonight’s game between the Wings and Penguins:

Detroit is coming off a 2-0 shutout victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday. Christian Fischer and Vladimir Tarasenko both found the back of the net while goalies Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot combined for 22 saves, helping the Red Wings complete a two-game exhibition sweep of the Blackhawks.

“I thought we had an honest game for a preseason game,” Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde said. “I saw guys winning some lines, blocking some shots and managing the puck. A lot of positives on that end.”

Fischer said getting back into game shape and speed takes time, which is why he believes having a fast-paced Training Camp has been so valuable.

“We’ve had a helluva camp up to this point,” Fischer said. “We’ve had some very hard practices, the coaches are really hammering the systems and o-zone, d-zone, neutral zone. They’re some intense practices out there, but it just shakes all that rust off. That’s probably the biggest thing.”

According to Fischer, this year’s Training Camp feels different compared to last.

“We all know what we want to achieve,” Fischer said. “Starting with the leadership guys, with Larks, he’s driving the bus every day. It’s fun to be in practice with him.”

Red Wings-Penguins morning skate Tweets: Kane, Red Wings hope to extend winning streak vs. young Penguins lineup

The Detroit Red Wings will host the Pittsburgh Penguins this evening at Little Caesars Arena (7 PM EDT on DetroitRedWings.com and PittsburghPenguins.com).

The Penguins are sending a particularly “green” lineup to Detroit (no Crosby, no Letang, no Malkin, but former Wolverine Rutger McGroaty will play tonight) as their main lineup will be playing on Sunday for a Kraft Hockeyville game in Sudbury, Ontario, so the Wings will look to build upon their win over Chicago on Friday night by taking this young Penguins team seriously.

The Red Wings’ “game day” group took to the ice just before 10:30 AM at Little Caesars Arena; the non-game-day group usually skates after the game-day group at the adjacent BELFOR Training Center.

It appears that, per the Hockey News’s Sam Stockton, Patrick Kane will skate on a line with Dylan Larkin tonight; Ville Husso is scheduled to start and play the first 2 periods, with Sebastian Cossa relieving Husso in the 3rd period.

I’m wondering whether the Wings might go 11-and-7 this evening, given what MLive’s Ansar Khan is reporting:

‘Breakout’ expectations for Simon Edvinsson

The Athletic asked its NHL beat writers to pick each NHL team’s “biggest breakout candidate” for the upcoming season, and here’s what Max Bultman had to say about the Red Wings’ Simon Edvinsson:

Detroit Red Wings

Simon Edvinsson, D: Edvinsson came up late last season and made a positive impact for the Red Wings in a playoff chase that came up just short. Now, he’s slated for a full-time role in the top four where he should be able to use his long reach and skating to help kill plays and evade trouble on the breakout. Edvinsson may not pile up big offensive numbers right away, without a clear power-play spot, but if he can help tilt the ice more in Detroit’s favor he could be a major factor in its quest to turn the corner. — Max Bultman

Continued (paywall); Edvinsson is the consensus “breakout player” pick. We’ll see how well he does this upcoming season…I’m assuming that he’ll shine.

Morning Khan: Lyon hopes to establish himself as the Wings’ #1 goaltender

MLive’s Ansar Khan posted a morning column which discusses Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon’s attempts to earn the starting job in Detroit’s three-goalie crease:

Ville Husso and Cam Talbot have considerably more NHL experience than Lyon, but coach Derek Lalonde said during training camp that the goaltending job is wide open. Lyon, who appeared in a career-high 44 games and went 21-18-5, can grab it.

“My whole career I had to kind of work for every inch that I’ve gotten,” Lyon said. “So, my approach remains the same. Coming off last year, feel a bit more comfortable playing in the NHL and just trying to build on that confidence and I think that everybody in the locker room feels like we’re on a mission.”

Talbot, signed to a two-year deal in the offseason, was tested in the third period, making nine saves. Christian Fischer and Vladimir Tarasenko (power play) scored in the second period as the Red Wings moved to 2-0 and have allowed only two goals thus far.

“Our approach all along was a clean slate for the goaltending and we’re sticking to that,” Lalonde said. “And so far, I think all four goalies that have played have shown some positives. The positive with so many exhibition games is eight (games) is a lot of goalie looks.”

Lyon said the disappointing end to the season – missing the playoffs on a tiebreaker – left a bad taste.

“I’m sure everybody would probably say that but just tried to use it as fuel for the fire and felt like I put in a lot of work this summer and just excited and optimistic to get going,” he said.

Red Wings-Blackhawks wrap-up: efficient Wings, checking line sweep the Blackhawks

The Detroit Red Wings swept their preseason slate against the Chicago Blackhawks by defeating the Hawks 2-0 on Friday evening at Little Caesars Arena. Detroit also took down the Hawks 4-2 in Chicago on Wednesday, so this was a satisfying sweep of the hated Hawks (even if it is only preseason hockey).

Detroit will continue its preseason slate against the Pittsburgh Penguins tomorrow night (7 PM EDT start on DetroitRedWings.com) with Patrick Kane in the lineup and Ville Husso and Sebastian Cossa splitting goaltending duties (per DetroitRedWings.com’s Carley Johnston).

Neither the Red Wings nor the Blackhawks iced their preseason best on Friday–Detroit’s lineup consisted of the Tarasenko-Compher-Berggren line, the dominant Rasmussen-Copp-Fischer line, and mid-season form from Chiarot and Seider on defense, with an astute Alex Lyon in goal for the first two periods, but then there were a significant number of young players and the Wings’ two try-outs in Isaac Ratcliffe and Alex Chiasson.

Chicago’s lineup was very young, though it included Mt. Clemens’ Frank Nazar and fellow rookie A.J. Spellacy, and their best player was goaltender Arvid Soderblom, who stopped 29 shots…

But the Red Wings deserve full marks for serving as a strong under-card to the playoff-clinching Detroit Tigers thanks to an efficient first 40 minutes, registering a goal at 4:10 of the 2nd thanks to a pretty passing play from Rasmussen and Copp to Christian Fischer, and then a power play goal in which Vladimir Tarasenko took a set of passes from Copp and J.T. Compher, and #11 roofed the puck over Soderblom…

And when the Hawks pushed in the 3rd period, a superb 9-save performance by Cam Talbot (after Lyon stopped 13 shots) sewed up a shutout and a sweep.

It wasn’t the Tigers making the playoffs, but it was fun to watch, audio glitches from the Red Wings’ stream included.

Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde told the Free Press’s Helene St. James that he was satisfied with his team’s effort:

Tweets of note: Kane will skate vs. Pens; Husso and Cossa to split netminding duties

Per DetroitRedWings.com’s Carley Johnston, regarding Saturday night’s game vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins:

Red Wings-vs-Blackhawks preseason quick take: Undercard Red Wings efficient in a 2-0 victory over Sweep Home, Chicago

The Detroit Red Wings played the back half of a home-and-home series with the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night at Little Caesars Arena.

Detroit won their first game against Chicago 4-2 on Wednesday in the Windy City, and Friday’s lineup for the home opener was a little different:

The Red Wings were of course the undercard to the playoff-clinching Detroit Tigers on Friday night, but they were nonetheless efficient, defeating Chicago 2-0 on the strength of an even-strength goal by Christian Fischer (from Copp and Seider) at 4:10 of the 2nd, a 5-on-4 power play goal from Tarasenko (from Copp and Compher) at 12:32 of the 2nd, and fine performances by Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot, who stopped 13 and 9 shots, respectively.

Marco Kasper, ‘rink rat’

The Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan filed a notebook article which discusses both Alex Chiasson’s recovery from hip surgery and Marco Kasper’s evolution as a young pro hockey player:

If you’re looking for Marco Kasper, you can usually find him on the ice still working on his skills after practice. The Wings’ 2022 first-round draft pick (eighth overall) is a genuine rink rat, along with several other young Detroit players.

“It’s just us, all of the players, pushing each other,” Kasper said. “We all want to get better and really strive to be a hard-working team. Just working with the skill guys out there. That makes us get better.”

After a slow start last season, Kasper ended on an impressive note in Grand Rapids, with 35 points (14 goals, 21 assists) in 71 games. Kasper was one of the better Griffins in the playoffs, with seven points (four goals) in nine games. Kasper felt his first pro season in Grand Rapids was a big step in his career.

“I have a lot more confidence this year,” Kasper said. “We worked a lot last year in Grand Rapids. That was a big part for us young guys to develop, get a chance to adjust to the pro level over here in North America and just work on our game a lot.”

Lalonde has been impressed by the amount of work Kasper has put in.

“He doesn’t even look like the same athlete as last year at this time,” Lalonde said. “He built some confidence from his growth last year and that was very valuable for him. He’s got some attitude into camp this year, which is certainly a positive.”
