Red Wings-Blackhawks preseason quick take: It’s a Tweetcap as the Red Wings lose 4-2

The Detroit Red Wings kicked off a busy stretch of 3 preseason games to be played over the course of 3 nights tonight in Chicago, where they lost a 4-2 decision to the Chicago Blackhawks.

Chicago opened the scoring only 2:09 into the 1st period, scoring the 1-0 goal via one Corey Perry:

The Hawks rushed out to a 6-2 shot advantage before Detroit was able to push back some 10:00 into the 1st, narrowing the shot deficit to 7-5…

But William Wallinder took a holding penalty at 10:03, and Chicago headed to the power play.

Detroit killed the penalty.

As the game continued, the Red Wings were icing the following lines:

Rasmussen-Copp-Perron

Kostin-Veleno-Berggren

Soderblom-Anisimov-Hirose

Doucet-Anisimov-L’Esperance

McIsaac-Wallinder

Chiarot-Holl

Johansson-Rafferty

Husso

Hutchinson

At the 16:59 mark, Tyler Johnson sat for the Hawks due to a trip on Johansson, and the Red Wings headed to the power play.

The Wings were not successful on their power play, but they generated momentum.

Ultimately, Detroit pushed back to take a 14-13 shot lead as the 1st period expired with Chicago leading 1-0. The Wings, from Nate Danielson on out, had a very good second half of the 1st.

In the 2nd period, a minute in, Jonatan Berggren drove up the left wing side and slithered a pass across the slot to Joe Veleno, who scored the 1-1 goal at 1:00 of the 2nd.

The game-tying goal read Veleno from Berggren and Chiarot at 1:00 2nd period.

At 1:16, Colin Murphy tripped Berggren, and Murphy headed off for tripping.

Instead, the Hawks went in on a 2-on-0, but MacKenzie Entwhistle fell.

The teams traded rushes for a good chunk of time, with the Blackhawks earning the majority of possession time in the Red Wings’ end, but Detroit did a good job of blocking shots and ensuring that their sticks were in passing lanes, so the Hawks got a bit bogged down.

The Red Wings changed goaltenders halfway through the game, while the Blackhawks stuck with Mrazek:

Speaking of “falling for it,” how bad is the Connor Bedard hype machine?

Well, Albert Johansson got tripped by Tyler Johnson, and, well…

Things got bogged down as the 2nd period progressed, and Chicago scored a 2-1 marker as Connor Murphy ripped a top-shelf marker through Michael Rasmussen’s stick and over Michael Hutchinson:

The 2-1 goal read Murphy from Bedard and Hall at 15:30.

Bedard did blow by Chiarot and Holl to draw a penalty at 16:14 of the 2nd…

But MacKenzie Entwhistle flubbed a shot off the post with a wide-open net behind Hutchinson gazing at him, and the Wings escaped the power play down by only one goal.

Detroit trailed 22-17 in shots at the end of the 2nd period.

In the 3rd period, the Blackhawks established possession and control of the puck in Detroit’s end for about the first five minutes’ worth of play, but Detroit pushed back as best they could, back-stopped by some smart Hutchinson stops.

When Veleno, Kostin and Berggren got on the ice for the first time, they generated a couple of scoring chances, and Kostin found Veleno for a sneaky snapper that was screened in part by Berggren at 4:49, tying the game at 2-2.

Detroit got hemmed in for a bit as the Hawks made the Wings’ defensive zone coverage look as sloppy as it was, but the Wings kept Chicago to the outside for a bit…

But Bedard raced into the Wings’ zone, Ben Chiarot picked him off with a leg check, and Joe Veleno got caught hacking Colton Dach at 8:36 of the 3rd, yielding a 3rd penalty kill…

And late in the power play, Corey Perry scored his second goal, making it 3-2 at 9:59 of the 3rd, from Hall and Bedard.

I know the Wings over-covered Bedard, but I don’t like Wallinder getting lost between Perry and Hall, nor do I like Hutchinson diving to stop Perry. It’s a cascading set of errors there.

Connor Bedard actually got called for a penalty at 13:42, due to tripping Albert Johansson, and the Red Wings headed to a desperately-needed power play, down by a goal…

Chicago killed the penalty–on a night where Rasmussen, Copp and Perron really struggled, and both Wallinder and Soderblom struggled with puck control…

When some rough stuff broke out between Artem Anisimov, Klim Kostin, Nick Foligno and Isaak Phillips, well…

Detroit got the offensive zone faceoff as an advantage, but Danielson, Perron, Copp and Rasmussen cycled, re-set, Chiarot came onto the ice as the 5th man, and he fired a hard shot that Rasmussen tipped wide of Mrazek.

Nate Danielson made a lazy lay-in and the Hawks got an easy clear;

Detroit changed with 2:20 remaining, and Dach fired wide of the empty net;

Detroit called a timeout with 2:00 remaining, and Soderblom, Veleno and Berggren were replaced by the vets and Danielson, and David Perron took a penalty at 18:22, forcing Hutchinson back into the Wings’ net

And Connor Bedard scored his first goal, an empty-netter as the Red Wings tried to pull Hutchinson, from Mrazek at 18:51 of the 3rd.

Just call him Hockey Jesus 2.0.

Caley Chelios is a fantastic broadcaster, but her sarcasm here left much to be desired:

Tomorrow, the Red Wings will travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins (7 PM EDT on SportsNet Pittsburgh), and they’ll wrap up the 3-in-3 in Toronto on Thursday (7 PM EDT on ESPN+); the preseason closes on Saturday as the Wings host the Leafs (7 PM EDT on Bally Sports Detroit and the NHL Network).

Statistically, here are the Game Summary, Event Summary and Roster sheets, which I now have to access through the NHL’s Media website…

Update: Sportsnet posted 10:24 of highlights from the Connor Bedard Show:
