Two things: A bit of praise for ASP, and a potential trade scenario

Of Red Wings-related note this morning:

  1. As you’ve already seen and read here, Red Wings prospect and Skelleftea AIK defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka is an intriguing prospect, but he’s rough around the edges. Detroit Hockey Now’s Kevin Allen discussed the fact that Wings fans can watch ASP closely thanks to a certain ice hockey .gif maker…

Thanks in no small part to IcehockeyGifs-provided video, Detroit fans have been able to enjoy watching Simon Edvinsson, Elmer  Soderblom, Marco Kasper and William Wallinder grow up in the SHL.

That tradition will continue this season with defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka playing for Skelleftea. His gifted puck-moving style will undoubtedly lend itself to some entertaining video highlights.

Sandin Pellikka contributed a goal and an assist to help Skelleftea down Tappara in a Champions Hockey League matchup. He played 16:53, giving him an average of 17:30 minutes per game in his three CHL contests. The SHL launches Sept. 14.

“He’ll have a good season in Skelleftea,” said Dan Cleary, the Red Wings’ Director of Player Development. “The SHL is a strong league.”

2. And Bleacher Report’s Lyle Richardson issued “Bold Trade Predictions” this morning, discussing the probable cost of any possible Mark Scheifele-to-Detroit scenario:

Mark Scheifele to the Detroit Red Wings: Since Steve Yzerman took over as general manager in 2019, the Detroit Red Wings have been rebuilding their roster. After Detroit missed the playoffs for the past seven seasons, he could be in the market for an impact player to help his club become a postseason contender.

That player could be Mark Scheifele. The 30-year-old center tallied a career-best 42 goals last season with the Winnipeg Jets. However, it’s uncertain if he’ll sign a contract extension before his eligibility for unrestricted free-agent status next July. That’s why he sits at No. 6 on our September Trade Block Big Board.

Scheifele could provide a welcome boost to the Red Wings offense while providing experienced depth as a first- or second-line center. He carries an average annual salary of $6.1 million for this season.

That salary could be difficult for some teams to take on given the flattened cap leaving most with limited cap space. However, it won’t be an issue for the Red Wings.

If the Wings wait until the trade deadline, they could accrue a projected $23.9 million in cap space, more than enough to take on Scheifele. With $30.9 million in cap room for 2024-25, they also have space to re-sign him if he proves to be a good fit and is willing to stay in Detroit.

If the Jets trade Scheifele, they could seek a young player as well as a prospect and/or a first-round pick. Yzerman could offer up prospects such as Carter Mazur and William Wallinder along with an NHL roster forward such as Joe Veleno.

I really dislike the idea of trading Mazur, the only real “s*** disturber” in the Wings’ system, or Wallinder, a potential defensive stalwart, but Richardson’s discussing a realistic request for return on Scheifele.

He’d definitely cost a 1st round pick, plus a prospect, plus a contributing young player.

  1. Hey George…. I know you’re more or less just passing along the information so just wanted to do a quick comment on my take. I think the return is accurate…. I just don’t see the fit for the wings…. Stevie isn’t about to give up that much for A) a potential rental and B) someone at the age of 30 that doesn’t fit into the core long term. I can see the merit behind the trade but it doesn’t seem realistic for the wings. (Also personally I’m not a fan) I think if we’re targeting a Winnipeg player it should be Kyle Connor it would definitely take more to get him but feel like he’d be better suited all around.

  2. Agree with Cory. Do not want Scheifele even if it takes less to get him. Kyle Connor is the guy I want from Winnipeg and I would definitely give up more for him. Something like… Raymond, 1st round pick and Mazur/Wallinder. Imagine a top line of Connor, Larkin and DeBrincat.

  3. I personally am not willing to give away Mazur before he has even got his chance. Something about that kid screams, patience will be rewarded
