Shayne Gostisbehere has signed with the Detroit Red Wings to a one-year, $4.125M deal. This is one of better signings by Yzerman today. Gostisbehere is a TOP4 offensive defenseman & who is also great on PP. For one year it’s good deal. pic.twitter.com/jxnsag4M8r— Andy & Rono (@ARHockeyStats) July 1, 2023
Shayne Gostisbehere, signed 1x$4ishM by DET, is a top four offensive defenceman with a great shot and excellent penalty differential. At his best in the offensive zone, pretty easy to beat off the rush. #LGRW pic.twitter.com/zkxfdDTvi1— JFresh (@JFreshHockey) July 1, 2023
Here’s CBS Sports’ take:
Gostisbehere recorded 13 goals and 41 points in 75 contests between Arizona and Carolina last season. Although the 30-year-old defenseman has had an up-and-down career, Gostisbehere is capable of serving in a top-four role and being a major asset on the power play. He should be put in a position to succeed with the Red Wings.
And MLive’s Ansar Khan confirms:
The move gives the team a left-shooting point man on one of its power-play units.
Gostisbehere, 30, split last season between Arizona and Carolina, collecting 13 goals and 41 points. He had no goals and three assists in 15 playoff games with the Hurricanes.
The Red Wings defense now features left shooters Jake Walman, Olli Maatta, Ben Chiarot, Gostisbehere and 2021 top pick Simon Edvinsson, who will be competing for a roster spot, and right shooters Moritz Seider, Justin Holl and Gustav Lidstrom.

The Free Press’s Helene St. James also confirms:
The Detroit Red Wings stayed busy into the evening as NHL free agency began Saturday, also adding Shayne Gostisbehere.
The 30-year-old defenseman agreed to a one-year deal worth $4.125 million. Earlier on the first day of free agency, the Wings signed right-shot defenseman Justin Holl. Gotisbehere adds to the left-side defense on a depth chart that already includes Ben Chiarot, Olli Määtta, Jake Walman, and that could get a push in training camp from 2021 first-round pick Simon Edvinsson.
Gostisbehere is a veteran of 538 NHL games.

Here’s the Red Wings’ press release:
RED WINGS SIGN DEFENSEMAN SHAYNE GOSTISBEHERE TO ONE-YEAR CONTRACT
… Blueliner Has Recorded 311 Points in 538 NHL Games With Flyers, Coyotes and Hurricanes Since 2014-15 …
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today signed defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere to a one-year contract with an average annual value of $4.125 million.
Gostisbehere, 30, split the 2022-23 season between the Arizona Coyotes and Carolina Hurricanes. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound defenseman recorded 31 points (10-21-31) and 28 penalty minutes in 52 games with the Coyotes before adding 10 points (3-7-10) and four penalty minutes in 23 games with the Hurricanes. Gostisbehere also dished out three assists and six penalty minutes in 15 postseason contests, helping the Hurricanes reach the Eastern Conference Final for the second time in five years. He spent the entire 2021-22 season with the Coyotes, notching 51 points (14-37-51) and 26 penalty minutes in 82 games. Originally selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the third round (78th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Gostisbehere was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team in 2015-16 after tallying 46 points (17-29-46), a plus-eight rating and 24 penalty minutes in 64 regular-season games with the Flyers. In total, Gostisbehere has racked up 311 points (87-224-311) and 187 penalty minutes in 538 games with the Flyers, Coyotes and Hurricanes since 2014-15. He also posted 16 points (2-14-16) and six penalty minutes in 23 American Hockey League games with the Adirondack/Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
Prior to turning professional, Gostisbehere played three seasons at Union College from 2011-14, compiling 82 points (22-60-82), a plus-70 rating and 85 penalty minutes in 119 games. As a junior, Gostisbehere was named Most Outstanding Player at the 2014 Frozen Four after leading the Flying Dutchmen to their first NCAA championship in program history, logging three points (1-2-3) and a plus-seven rating in a 7-4 win over Minnesota in the title game. He also helped Union capture three-consecutive ECAC tournament championships and two regular-season titles. Gostisbehere attended South Kent (Conn.) Prep from 2009-11, scoring 69 points (13-56-69) in 57 games. A native of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Gostisbehere skated with Team North America at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, recording four assists, a plus-four rating and four penalty minutes in three games. Gostisbehere won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship, finishing with two points (1-1-2), a plus-four rating and 25 penalty minutes in six appearances.
Update: Here’s Detroit Hockey Now’s Bob Duff‘s take on the Gostisbehere signing:
Gostisbehere’s presence should certainly provide a boost to the Detroit power play. His NHL career has seen the Pembroke Pines, Florida-born defenseman garner 311 points in 538 NHL games. Among his 87 goals, 27 are power-play markers. Of his 224 assists, 79 have come while his team was enjoying the man advantage. Both Seider and Gostisbehere accounted for 15 power-play points last season. The 2022-23 season would mark the fourth time during his NHL career that Gostisbehere accounted for a minimum of five power-play goals during a single season.
Traditionally, Gostisbehere performs as a top-four defender. He logged 20:49 of ice time per game last season. As an added bonus, the left-hand shot is equally comfortable skating on either side of the ice. On a Detroit team with a dearth of right-shot defenders, that will certainly prove to be beneficial.
The trade off with Gostisbehere is similar to Hronek, the man whose role he’ll basically be replacing. He can be very suspect when playing without the puck.
