Here’s NHL.com on Holl:

Justin Holl signed a three-year, $10.2 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. It has an average annual value of $3.4 million.

The 31-year-old defenseman had 18 points (two goals, 16 assists) in 80 regular-season games for the Toronto Maple Leafs last season and one assist in six Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round (No. 54) of the 2010 NHL Draft, Holl has 82 points (11 goals, 71 assists) in 285 regular-season games for the Maple Leafs and three assists in 25 playoff games.

Here’s more from Helene St. James

Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman filled his vacancy for a right-shot defenseman with Justin Holl.

The 31-year-old was signed for three years with an annual average value of $3.4 million on Saturday’s opening day of free agency. The Wings had an opening after trading Filip Hronek at the deadline to the Vancouver Canucks.

Holl does not have the offensive skills that Hronek brought, but Holl will strengthen the Wings’ top-four defense corps.

Holl (6 foot 3, 197 pounds) adds size to the Wings’ back end. He’s a bit older than the core group that is in the mid-20s, but certainly not nearing retirement age. The Wings’ depth of right-shot defenders now reads Moritz Seider, Holl, and Gustav Lindström.

The Hockey News’s Mike Stephens also weighed in:

Holl has proven to be a capable puck-mover and penalty-killer throughout his time in Toronto, logging upwards of 20 minutes in average ice time in the club’s top four in each of his past three seasons. Offensively, though, Holl offers little value, finishing the 2022-23 season with just two goals and 16 assists for 18 points in 80 games, even spending two separate stints as a healthy scratch both in the regular season and playoffs.

Not to mention, Holl has become notorious among Maple Leafs fans for his lapses, with the 31-year-old struggling to show poise with the puck and making questionable decisions in pressure situations.

Nevertheless, though, Holl is a mobile right-shot defender who can succeed in transition, which is clearly what the Red Wings are looking for. A yearly price tag of $3.4 million, however, is incredibly steep.

Stay tuned. More moves are continuing to roll in.

As did MLive’s Ansar Khan:

The Detroit Red Wings filled their void for a right-shooting defenseman Saturday by signing Justin Holl to a three-year deal with an annual average value of $3.4 million.

Holl, 31, has averaged 20 minutes a game the past three seasons with Toronto and is good penalty killer. He has decent size (6-4, 210) but isn’t a physical player. He won’t provide a lot of offense (career highs of three goals, 23 points).

He struggled in the playoffs (minus-7 in eight games, in scratched four games).

Here’s the Wings’ press release:
