Here’s the Griffins’ press release:

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Griffins on Thursday announced their schedule for the 2022-23 American Hockey League season. It will mark the franchise’s 27th campaign overall, its 22nd as members of the AHL, and the 21st as the primary affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings.

Under fifth-year head coach Ben Simon, the Griffins will begin a 72-game schedule when they host the San Diego Gulls at Van Andel Arena on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. for Opening Night presented by Huntington Bank. This will be the first AHL season since 2014-15 in which all teams will play the same number of games, with standings order reverting to total points rather than points percentage.

This year’s schedule features 23 back-to-backs and two three-in-threes. The slate is comprised of 52 contests against Central Division rivals, four outings against the Atlantic Division, 12 matchups against the North Division and four games against the Pacific Division. The schedule includes an eight-game road trip from Oct. 22-Nov. 9, which ties for the team’s longest ever (March 22-April 5, 2009) and is by far the longest early-season road trip in franchise history, surpassing a trio of previous five-game trips in October or November (2009-10, 2011-12, and 2017-18).

“We are thrilled to welcome fans back to the Van for great entertainment and the opportunity to see future Detroit stars,” said Griffins president Tim Gortsema. “It should be an exciting year with lots of great prospects ready to make their mark with the Griffins, and we are eagerly looking forward to developing the next Moritz Seider.”

Highlights of the 2022-23 schedule include:

-Twenty-seven prime home dates (15 Fridays and 12 Saturdays) out of 36 games;

-The first-ever meeting against a team from Springfield;

-The return of Hartford to the schedule for the first time since 2008-09. Hartford’s general manager is former Griffins GM Ryan Martin;

-Matchups against San Diego for the first time since 2019-20;

-The Griffins’ first time playing both the reigning Calder Cup champion and runner-up (Chicago/Springfield) since 2008-09 (Chicago/Wilkes-Barre/Scranton), and just the fourth time ever (2005-06 Philadelphia/Chicago, 2003-04 Houston/Hamilton);

-The Griffins 25th annual New Year’s Eve celebration versus Milwaukee on Saturday, Dec. 31 (6 p.m. start), in addition to playing two days before Christmas (Dec. 23), one day after Thanksgiving (Nov. 25), and the day before Halloween (Oct. 30);
