Here’s the NHL’s press release:
NEW YORK (Nov. 2, 2021) – Detroit Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider, who led all rookies with eight assists and an average of 22:26 of time on ice across nine games, has been named the NHL’s “Rookie of the Month” for October.
Seider edged Red Wings teammate Lucas Raymond (4-5—9 in 9 GP), Nashville Predators left wing Tanner Jeannot (4-1—5 in 8 GP) and Florida Panthers goaltender Spencer Knight (2-0-1, 1.95 GAA, .929 SV%) for the honor.
Seider, who collected a pair of helpers in his League debut Oct. 14 vs. TBL, found the scoresheet in seven of his nine October appearances – including a five-game assist/point streak to close the month (Oct. 23-30: 0-5—5).
Seider’s eight assists/points were the most ever by a Red Wings defenseman through his first nine career NHL games, ahead of Nicklas Lidstrom (1-6—7) and Per Djoos (0-6—6). Only seven other defensemen in League history have collected as many helpers through their first nine career games, including active blueliners Will Butcher (10), Cale Makar (8) and Zach Werenski (8).
The 20-year-old Zell, Germany, native – who was selected by Detroit with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft – became the first Red Wings rookie (forward or defenseman) with at least eight assists in a calendar month since January 2002, when center Pavel Datsyuk posted eight in 13 games.
Seider also became the first defenseman on any team to earn “Rookie of the Month” honors since February 2020 (Quinn Hughes, VAN) and the first Detroit player (at any position) to claim the honor since center Dylan Larkin in November 2015.
