Red Wings-Blue Jackets quick take: Patience and ‘finishing’ afford Detroit a 4-1 win

The Detroit Red Wings attempted to defeat a team that’s had its number of late in the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night–Columbus’ record vs. Detroit was 11-3and-2 over the past 16 meetings–and Joonas Korpisalo sure as hell made the Red Wings’ life hard.

That being said, the Red Wings were patient as Korpisalo pitched a 31-save shoutout over two periods, and in the third period, Lucas Raymond scored his first goal, Tyler Bertuzzi scored his fifth, and when Boone Jenner scored a PPG marker to make it 2-1, Detroit responded with a pair of empty-net goals by Vladislav Namestnikov and Adam Erne to take a 4-1 decision.

Ultimately, Detroit out-shot Columbus 45-23, Detroit out-attempted Columbus 63-50, and Detroit did lose Raymond to a dirty check by Jack Roslovic, and we’re all waiting for an update there…

But this was a complete game by the Red Wings, and Detroit’s now 2-0-and-1 heading into a stretch of playing 3 more games over the course of the next 5 days.

The Red Wings iced the following lines:

While Columbus warmed up with the following:

The starting lineups consisted of the following:

In the 1st period…Began with the teams’ respective fourth lines facing off, and Columbus won the opening draw, chipped and chased, and Detroit parried the play, with Givani Smith skating in 1-on-1 to generate the game’s first shot only 12 seconds in.

Gustav Lindstrom and Marc Staal were able to generate two more shots on Korpisalo before Givani Smith tried to fight a Blue Jackets defenseman, and 31 seconds in, the Wings changed lines.

The Rasmussen line then generated some zone time with Nick Leddy and Moritz Seider doing some hard work in the offensive zone; they were followed by the top line, which battled the Columbus line including Yegor Chinakov, the heralded rookie, and Detroit had rolled all four lines by the 2:10 mark of the 1st…

With Pius Suter sending a puck off Joonas Korpisalo just under 2:20 into the 1st period.

Detroit raced out to a 5-0 shot advantage some 3 minutes into the 1st period, and the Wings kept shooting and kept cycling in the offensive zone…

And at the next stoppage in play, Givani Smith tried to get into another fight.

Ultimately, Michael Rasmussen did a fine job of chugging the puck up and in to Adam Erne, and Erne fed Rasmussen in the slot for a backhand shot that resulted in Detroit’s first scoring chance 5:15 into the 1st.

A few days ago I mentioned that the Wings seem to be moving North-South better than in years past.

Here’s a nice little example from Namestnikov, Erne and Rasmussen #LGRW pic.twitter.com/8WvlPsPCP8— Nolan Bianchi (@nolanbianchi) October 19, 2021

Columbus was quite ornery, trying to challenge every Red Wings player who got anywhere near their goaltender, and the Wings held their temper for the most part, but took no shit.

Pius Suter nearly jabbed the puck free from Korpisalo on a bad puck read by the Columbus goaltender…

At the first TV timeout at 7:22, Detroit was leading the shots 7-0 and their attempts were 8-0.

As play resumed, Detroit began to find Columbus was slowly but surely waking up, and the Wings admittedly got a little sloppy in terms of their puck control as Columbus’ wise stick-checking stifled Detroit’s offensive game, but the Wings held fast–and held onto the puck for the most part…

And by the time Thomas Griess stopped the puck off a redirection some 8 minutes into the 1st, giving Detroit its first save, Detroit found its hands full as the plucky Blue Jackets came to life.

Gustav Lindstrom was having an outstanding 1st period, and he made a great play to feed the puck down low to Lucas Raymond, but his centering pass to Tyler Bertuzzi was gobbled up by Korpisalo.

A bad pas by Filip Zadina yielded a scoring chance for Columbus when Zach Werenski flipped the puck in on Greiss, but Greiss made the stop…

And Columbus headed to the penalty box as Patrik Laine got tagged for slashing at 11:17.

Regrettably, the first thing the Wings did was turn the puck over, but Nick Leddy’s speed negated his own mistake;

Filip Zadina fired a heavy shot off Korpisalo’s toe;

Greiss fed the puck to Hronek to clear the zone off a Blue Jackets mini-break;

Ultimately, the Blue Jackets were able to stifle most of the Red Wings’ power play chances, however, and it was an ugly affair overall. Columbus was too easily able to chip pucks off Wings sticks and win one-on-one battles for the puck.

The best scoring chance of the PP happened as it expired, and Greiss had to stop Gustav Nyquist on a 2-on-1.

Greiss made a FANTASTIC stop on another 2-on-1, stopping Yegor Chinakov on a break-in with Jack Roslovic…

Thomas Greiss denies Yegor Chinakhov of his first NHL goal #LGRW pic.twitter.com/bYDqAo5PgF— Nolan Bianchi (@nolanbianchi) October 20, 2021

And when Dylan Larkin and Tyler Bertuzzi raced the other way on their own 2-on-1, the duo over-passed, affording Korpisalo an easy stop.

Larkin and Bertuzzi get a 2-on-1, but stay a little too tight and aren’t able to get a decent look from it.

Looked like Bert was gonna try to do a little criss-cross and Larkin just didn’t #LGRW pic.twitter.com/xJ2zdfD6IW— Nolan Bianchi (@nolanbianchi) October 20, 2021

Ultimately, Detroit led the Blue Jackets in shots 12-6 some 15:26 into the 1st, but the attempts were 15-8, and Columbus was closing the gap in more ways than one.

Detroit DID generate some scoring chances in the Blue Jackets’ end as the period began to wane, and Givani Smith got caught cross-checking Harrington repeatedly, yielding a penalty-kill at 17:06.

Smith gets cross checked, gives it back rather inconspicuously, and is now headed to the box as CBJ goes on the power play #LGRW pic.twitter.com/jlifvGRHnX— Nolan Bianchi (@nolanbianchi) October 20, 2021

On the PK: Stephens, Rasmussen, DeKeyser and Hronek started the PK, won the initial draw, and cleared it out of trouble;

Columbus set up, and Werenski got caught hand-passing the puck to a teammate;

Columbus continued to cycle the puck in Detroit’s zone, but active sticks were breaking up their passes and sending pucks into the crowd instead of toward the Red Wings’ net.

Columbus did a good job of persisting as the Wings’ 2nd unit worked opposite the Blue Jackets, with Staal, Lindstrom, Gagner and Namestnikov getting backed in, but Detroit was able to kill the penalty.

The 1st period ended without incident, and Detroit out-shot Columbus 13-8, but the attempts were 16-14 Detroit.

In the 2nd period…The 2nd period began with the Blue Jackets chipping in the puck as Nicklas Lidstrom spoke with Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond, and Detroit had to work very hard to keep Columbus off the board off a wraparound attempt that Greiss kicked the net off to prevent from happening.

Columbus really looked like it was buzzing to start the 2nd period, and Rasmussen, Erne and Namestnikov surrendered a 3-on-2 that Seider and Leddy stopped, Rasmussen chipped and changed, and 1:10 into the 2nd, Columbus had Detroit on the run.

That being said, Robby Fabbri got the Wings’ first shot on Korpisalo on a lone rush shortly after the Wings changed, and Detroit cycled in the Blue Jackets’ zone as Suter, Zadina, Staal and Lindstrom worked the puck through the perimeter.

The Wings looked pretty good overall, and Mitchell Stephens sent a wraparound attempt of his own to Sam Gagner, who put the puck off the crossbar.

As Detroit found its own sea legs, Gagner fed Smith in front for a puck jab that Korpisalo stopped, and the Wings raced out to a 16-8 shot lead some 3 minutes into the 2nd period.

Detroit continued to cycle the puck in deep, with Filip Hronek chipping a one-timer off Korpisalo, and Tyler Bertuzzi fed the puck to Lucas Raymond for a jam job that, again, Korpisalo denied.

The Bertuzzi-Larkin-Raymond line is BUZZING #LGRW pic.twitter.com/e5gPL9Gpja— Nolan Bianchi (@nolanbianchi) October 20, 2021

Columbus served its own chances up against Greiss some 5 minutes into the 2nd, but Greiss made some wise stops, and Detroit made some good blocks in terms of both shots and passes to prevent the Blue Jackets from scoring.

Columbus’ fourth line was giving it to the Wings, and Zach Werenski hit the crossbar behind Greiss some 5:50 into the 2nd…

Ultimately, Columbus began to cycle in the Wings’ zone, and Detroit got very lucky that the TV timeout hit with 7:01 gone in the 2nd.

The shots were 10-2 Detroit in the 2nd and 23-10 Detroit overall, but the attempts were 30-23, more indicative of Columbus’ status as still very much so in the 0-0 game.

Worse, Moritz Seider got tagged with Delay of Game at 7:04, and on the penalty-kill, Detroit leaned on Thomas Griess to keep the game scoreless.

Columbus wasn’t demonstrative or decisive with the puck, however, and Detroit was able to chug up ice as Namestnikov and Rasmussen got a 2-on-1 opportunity that Rasmussen could not finish as Korpisalo made a big stop.

Namestnikov should have shot the puck. The pass gave Korpisalo the time necessary to get into the play and set up for a save.

The Wings got a little crossed up toward the 10-minute mark, but Greiss continued to make smart stops, and Detroit was slowly but surely taking control of the puck and moving the nexus of play into Columbus’ zone.

Off a really good cycling play, Filip Zadina charged toward the net and put the puck off Korpisalo and the goalpost, but Korpisalo was able to get his glove on the puck before Zadina could put it in the back of the net.

11 minutes into the 2nd period, Larkin fed DeKeyser, DeKeyser fired a slot shot in on Korpisalo, and the Blue Jackets’ resident wall in the net kept Columbus even at zeroes.

Detroit was doing a good job of keeping Columbus to the perimeter in the defensive zone, winning battles in the neutral zone, and pushing the pace of play in the Blue Jackets’ end, but Korpisalo was seeing the puck, and Detroit did not have enough rebound opportunities or screens to make Korpisalo’s job hard.

At 12:54, Moriz Seider got cut by Cole Sillinger, but Sillinger only got 2 minutes for a high stick…

On the power play, Detroit drew another penalty as Sean Kuraly got tagged for tripping at 13:20, giving Detroit 1:34 of 5 on 3 PP time.

Detroit won the opening faceoff, Raymond, Seider, Hronek, Larkin and Bertuzzi worked the perimeter, and Seider fired a shot on net that Korpisalo could see…

Columbus won the next faceoff and cleared the zone, so Hronek lugged the puck in himself, found Seider, Detroit cycled to Raymond down low, Hronek fed Larkin, and Raymond whiffed wide on the one-timer.

Bertuzzi could not center the puck, Larkin found Hronek, he fed Larkin, back and forth it went, and LARKIN TRIED TO JAM THE PUCK INTO THE GOAL but Korpisalo fishtailed the goalpost…And kept the puck out of the goal.

Gagner, Rasmussen, Fabbri, Zadina and Leddy worked the 2nd unit, Detroit was held to the end boards, and Columbus got a 2-on-1 where Nyquist fired the puck wide as Sillinger came out of the box…

The 5 on 4 ended, too, with the Wings firing shots wide of the net.

With 4 minutes remaking in the 2nd period, Detroit was dominating possession and control of the puck, Detroit was dominating shots–30 to 12–and Korpisalo was dominating the game.

Smith, Zadina and Stephens did a good job of working their way around the Blue Jackets’ zone to help Lindstrom and Staal cycle the puck, but Columbus was persistent, and as Detroit changed…

The Wings’ attempts to generate scoring chances were stifled by good Blue Jackets blocks and sticks, and Columbus nearly scored…But Dylan Larkin made a great stick lift on Alexandre Texier, keeping things scoreless.

Detroit ultimately out-shot the Blue Jackets 18-4 in the 2nd and 31-13 on the night (attempts were 43-28 Detroit), but the Wings couldn’t make Korpisalo’s life hard.

Stats through 2. ?#LGRW pic.twitter.com/Helyuvbrnb— Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) October 20, 2021

The scoring chances were listed at 14-4 Wings after 2 periods, too, so it wasn’t as if the game was boring. It was fun to watch. Just no goals.

In the 3rd period…The Red Wings started the period with their second line, and Zadina, Suter and Fabbri battled the puck into the Blue Jackets’ zone, surrendered a rush, and Bjorkstrand sent the puck just wide of Thomas Greiss.

Columbus was able to cycle the puck down low, and Robby Fabbri made a huge block on Laine before Laine shot a puck on Greiss himself.

Detroit needed to pick up their play, and so the Larkin line took to the ice, surrendered a shot by Roslovic that went high and wide, and afforded Columbus a 3-on-2 in which Thomas Greiss chipped the puck out of play…

But off the glass, thankfully, so the Wings did not take a penalty.

Columbus’ Harrington hit the outside of the post;

Detroit was then afforded the first power play of the 3rd period thanks to a bad trip by Harrington on Erne, and Harrington headed to the box at 2:15.

On the power play, Hronek, Rasmussen, Erne, Zadina and Seider started the PP, and while Columbus got the first scoring chance, Seider walloped the Blue Jackets forward;

Zadina sent a hard shot wide, Detroit tried to cycle, managed to do so, and Seider fed Hronek, he gave the puck to Erne, got it back, Seider really quarterbacked things well, and the first unit changed…

The Larkin unit was unable to enter the zone easily, so Leddy fed Larkin for a second rush, the Wings cycled on the half boards, and Raymond was STONED by Korpisalo TWICE off a great feed from Bertuzzi.

That was the end of the power play.

Gustav Lindstrom got a good scoring chance after the PP expired, too, but the Blue Jackets blocked his shot out of play.

Columbus really had a lot of jump as the Wings recovered from the mediocre power play, and the nexus of play was pushed into the center ice area, especially because the Wings did not do a good job of winning stick battles for the puck…

And when Boone Jenner fired the puck into Greiss of a slap shot from 35 feet out, it was emblematic of the, “Hell, this might work?” night.

Ultimately, however, Moritz Seider made a nice play to Nick Leddy in his own zone, Leddy fed the puck to Larkin, who dashed through center, and at 6:17, Lucas Raymond ripped a heavy shot over Korpisalo’s glove to make it 1-0.

Lucas Raymond scored the 1-0 goal from Dylan Larkin and Nick Leddy at 6:17, making it 1-0.

The Red Wings continued to press Columbus as best they could after their goal, with Rasmussen and Namestnikov getting a little “too cute” on a 3-on-2…

Adam Boqvist fired a heavy shot in on Griess that was stopped easily…

Detroit managed to regain conttrol of the puck, and a Marc Staal shot was STONED by Korpisalo as Robby Fabbri tried to put the rebound in…and Filip Zadina was stifled, too.

Leddy nearly fed Bertuzzi for a one-timer, but his pass was blocked…

And when Lucas Raymond chipped the puck to Dylan Larkin at the offensive blueline, Larkin settled the puck, found Tyler Bertuzzi, and Bertuzzi roofed the 2-0 goal over Korpisalo’s blocker.

Tyler Bertuzzi made it 2-0 from Larkin and Raymond at 8:53 of the 3rd.

Bizarrely, Vladislav Namestnikov headed to the box alone for roughing at 9:38 despite being roughed up by a Blue Jackets defenseman…

And on the penalty-kill…

Stephens, Hronek, DeKeyser and Gagner worked quite well to block Blue Jackets shots and passes, and that unit got off the ice quickly;

Bertuzzi, Rasmussen, Lindstrom and Staal then got to work, and they were less aggressive, but Columbus sent pucks wide and high, so Detroit was able to successfully kill more of the penalty;

Stephens and Gagner also had a good shift, working with Seider and DeKeyser…

And the penalty was killed with Griess grabbing a Roslovic shot.

Disappointingly, Lucas Raymond was hit from behind by Jack Roslovic, and Roslovic drew a penalty on Tyler Bertuzzi for retaliating.

On the penalty-kill, Columbus really worked the puck well…

And Boone JENNER SCORED A DAMNED EFFING GOAL over Thomas Greiss’s glove to make it 2-1.

Jenner scored the 2-1 goal from Jakub Voracek and Patrik Laine on the power play at 12:50.

Detroit did its best to close out the game without Raymond, and Erne and Rasmussen nearly connected on a couple of plays, but Columbus was stout defensively–to their credit…

With 4:18 left in the 3rd, we hit a TV timeout, and Columbus pushed damn hard to tie the game thereafter, forcing Detroit into an icing call with 3:45 remaining…

But Detroit did a good job of “killing” the icing call, and Detroit did a good job of re-taking control of the puck for the most part.

Columbus certainly played with pace and speed, but the Red Wings were determined to end the game in regulation, and they put the pedal down.

Korpisalo was pulled with 1:48 left, and Greiss and the goalpost made a big stop off Bjorkstrand…

But Adam Erne fed Vladislav Namestnikov for a 3-1 empty net goal.

Namestnikov made it 3-1 from Erne and Staal with 1:14 remaining. Detroit led 3-1.

In the final minute of play, Columbus did not let up by any means, pulling Korpisalo again, but Greiss was stout, and Adam Erne was set up by Vladislav Namestnikov to make it 4-1 Detroit with 9.9 seconds remaining in the 3rd period.

Erne scored from Namestnikov and Rasmussen at 19:48 to make it 4-1.

We hear from Tyler Bertuzzi after he scores his fifth goal of the season, which also turns out to be the winner Tuesday night. #LGRW pic.twitter.com/UkuIsr4yPS— Bally Sports Detroit (@BallySportsDET) October 20, 2021
