Steve Yzerman made another low-risk signing within half an hour of free agency starting.
He signed forward Bobby Ryan to a one-year deal worth $1 million. Ryan, 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds, is a former 20-goal scorer who still has the skill set to help provide a much-needed boost to the Detroit Red Wings‘ offense. Ryan most recently played for the Ottawa Senators.
In 833 career games split between the Senators and Anaheim Ducks, who drafted Ryan at second overall in 2005, Ryan has 254 goals and 301 assists.
Ryan can slot right into the top six, playing on the second line with Robby Fabbri and Valtteri Filppula or FIlip Zadina. He’s a right-shot, offensive-minded veteran who, at 33, is trying to keep a foothold in the NHL.
Ryan was limited to 24 games in 2019-20, spending roughly three months attending an NHL assistance program for alcohol abuse. Ryan returned to the Senators lineup Feb. 25, and record a hat trick one game later. He was awarded the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for perseverance and dedication to hockey by the Professional Hockey Writers Association after the season ended.
He was bought out by the Senators in late September, making him a free agent.
ESPN:
The Detroit Red Wings have a one-year, $1 million deal with former Ottawa Senators forward Bobby Ryan.
The Senators bought out Ryan’s deal last month. Ryan had two years left on his contract at a $7.25 million cap hit and was owed $15 million in real cash.
Ryan won the Masterton Trophy, the NHL’s award for perseverance, on Sept. 7 after publicly sharing his struggle with alcohol issues. The 33-year-old forward entered the NHL/NHL Players’ Assistance program on Nov. 20 to get help for his addiction issues.
A four-time 30-goal scorer earlier in his career, Ryan has struggled in recent years. The 33-year-old had 15 goals and 42 points in 2018-19 and eight points in 24 games this past season.

From the Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan:
Ryan, 33, is signing a one-year deal worth approximately $1 million with the Wings.
Ryan had five goals and three assists in 24 games with Ottawa last season. Ryan missed a portion of the season beginning in November to enter the NHL/NHL Players Association player assistance program, for alcohol abuse.
Ryan returned on Feb. 25 and scored three goals for Ottawa in a 5-2 victory over Nashville.
A former No. 2 overall pick in 2005, Ryan has played in 833 regular-season games with 555 points (254 goals, 301 assists).
Ryan scored at least 30 goals each season from 2008-12 while in Anaheim — but never scored more than 23 goals in Ottawa.
WDIV’s David Barkowiak Jr.:
The Detroit Red Wings have signed right wing Bobby Ryan to a one-year contract, the team announced Friday.
Ryan, 33, was awarded the NHL’s Masterton Trophy this past season after a battle with alcohol abuse. The award goes to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Ryan had taken an extended leave of absence from the Ottawa Senators starting in November to enter the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program, citing his issues with alcohol abuse.
However, he returned to play in February and scored a hat trick in his first home game back in action.
Ryan was a first-round pick — 2nd overall — by the Anaheim Ducks in 2005. He has 254 goals and 301 assists in 803 career NHL games.
