RED WINGS ANNOUNCE 2018 DEVELOPMENT CAMP ROSTER
… First-Round Picks Zadina, Veleno, Rasmussen and Cholowski Slated to Attend Sold-out Camp …DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today announced the roster for their 2018 Development Camp, which will be held at the BELFOR Training Center inside Little Caesars Arena from Tuesday, June 26 to Saturday, June 30. The camp roster currently consists of 23 forwards, 13 defensemen and seven goaltenders.
The Red Wings will have four former first-round picks in attendance in forwards Michael Rasmussen (9th overall in 2017), Joe Veleno (30th overall in 2018) and Filip Zadina (6th overall in 2018) and defenseman Dennis Cholowski (20th overall in 2016). Rasmussen led the Red Wings in goals during the 2017 preseason and recovered from injury to produce 59 points (31-28-59) in 47 regular-season games for the Western Hockey League’s Tri-City Americans in 2017-18, before amassing 33 points (16-17-33) in just 14 postseason games to help Tri-City upset higher-seeded teams with back-to-back sweeps before being eliminated in the WHL’s Conference Finals. Veleno similarly finished the season on a high note, racking up 48 points (16-32-48) in 33 games with the Drummondville Voltigeurs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League after starting the season with 31 points (6-25-31) in 31 games as captain of the Saint John Sea Dogs. Veleno was the first player in QMJHL history to be granted Exceptional Player Status by Hockey Canada to allow him to enter the league as a 15-year-old, a year earlier than the league’s minimum age of 16.
Detroit’s top pick in 2018, and highest player selected (sixth overall) by the team since drafting Keith Primeau third overall at the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Filip Zadina recorded 82 points (44-38-82) in 57 games with the Halifax Mooseheads to lead all QMJHL rookies and win the Mike Bossy Trophy as the QMJHL’s best professional prospect. He also scored seven goals in seven games for the Czech Republic at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship as an underager. The final first-round pick in attendance, Cholowski, was signed by Detroit last spring and spent the season in the Western Hockey League, finishing eighth in the league in scoring by defensemen with a combined 66 points (14-52-66) between the Prince George Cougars and Portland Winterhawks before making his AHL postseason debut during the Griffins’ playoff run.
All 10 players selected by the Red Wings at the 2018 NHL Entry Draft on June 22-23 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas will be in attendance, joining Veleno and Zadina: forwards Jonatan Berggren, Ryan O’Reilly and Otto Kivenmaki; defensemen Jared McIsaac, Alec Regula and Seth Barton; and goaltenders Jesper Eliasson and Victor Brattstrom. The camp also includes all 11 players drafted in 2017, five selected in 2016, three chosen in 2015 and one drafted in 2013. This year’s roster also includes 11 free agent invitees and two goalies who the Red Wings signed as free agents within the last year: Kaden Fulcher, who earned a contract after attending Development Camp and Training Camp as a free agent last year and went on to win an Ontario Hockey League championship with the Hamilton Bulldogs, leading all goalies in the playoffs in goals-against average and save percentage; and Patrik Rybar, signed by the Red Wings in May after spending the last four seasons playing professionally in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. He made his men’s national team debut for Slovakia this season by serving as the third goalie at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Korea, and appearing in two games at the 2018 IIHF World Championship in Denmark.
