Mike Green out for the season due to neck surgery

From the Red Wings:

MIKE GREEN TO UNDERGO NECK SURGERY; WILL MISS REMAINDER OF 2017-18 SEASON

Detroit, MI…The Detroit Red Wings today announced that defenseman Mike Green will undergo surgery on his cervical spine and will miss the remainder of the 2017-18 season.  Green missed seven games from Feb. 17-28 with the injury but returned to the Detroit lineup on March 2 at Winnipeg.  He re-aggravated the injury during the team’s practice on March 21 at Little Caesars Arena.  The procedure is scheduled for April 5 at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and will be performed by Dr. Frank Cammisa.  A minimum two months of recovery time is expected.

Green, 32, has appeared in 65 games for the Red Wings this season.  He leads all Detroit defensemen in assists (25) and points (33), while ranking second among blueliners with eight goals.

  1. I guess this isn’t the kind of lingering issue you advertise, but
did anyone know going into this season (or when we signed him) that Green was potentially one not so heavy hit from (Erne) from being wiped out right before the trade deadline? And vulnerable enough that he could reaggravate that injury soon after (in practice no less) to the point he’d need major surgery?

Does anyone know when and how the original injury to Green happened?

  2. Management needs to insist on spinal safety period. They never should have waited. It makes me a bit disgusted that it$ okay to play a game and risk permanent injury or worse. Its HIS NECK! How more vulnerable to impact can a body part be??

Mr. Green proves to be a great Red Wing and I would welcome him back healthy next year…..as long as some other veteran types are released.

    Be Well!
