Kulfan’s notebook: Yzerman weighs in on Berggren, Edvinsson and other young players

The Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan filed an evening notebook in which he discusses more highlights of Steve Yzerman’s pre-training camp press conference, and among Kulfan’s topics of interest are Yzerman’s remarks regarding the Red Wings’ younger players:

Forward Jonatan Berggren, 22, had 21 goals and 43 assists with the Griffins, and could be in consideration for an NHL roster spot with a good training camp.

“Jonatan had an outstanding year,” Yzerman said. “He adjusted well. I saw him in Detroit last week and he’s in excellent shape. He quietly went about his business (last season) and did well. I’m very interested to see him in the preseason. He’s an interesting one. He’s worked real hard and I’m real happy with his attitude and determination. He’s one for all of us to follow closely.”

Defenseman Simon Edvinsson, 19, the Wings’ 2021 first-round draft pick, will be in the running for a roster spot with the Wings. But Yzerman stressed Edvinsson’s age and North American pro inexperience are factors.

“Moritz (Seider) had the benefit of playing a year in the AHL (with Grand Rapids) and going over during the pandemic to Sweden and got an extra year of development before he stepped in,” Yzerman said. “Simon has a good chance, but I can’t sit here and definitively say he’ll be in the lineup on opening night.”

Yzerman wants to make sure Edvinsson is playing regularly this season, and playing in different situations.

“I don’t want him in and out of the lineup and not getting an opportunity on special teams, at least of the units,” Yzerman said. “We’ll figure out which level he’s ready for.”

Continued; we forget about Jonatan Berggren at our peril!

Daily Faceoff’s McKenna ranks the Red Wings’ ‘interesting’ goaltending tandem 15th out of 32

Daily Faceoff’s Mike McKenna posted a list ranking every NHL team’s goaltending pairs, and he gives the Red Wings’ tandem of Ville Husso and Alex Nedeljkovic a right-in-the-middle-of-the-rankingd, well, ranking:

15. Detroit Red Wings: Ville Husso & Alex Nedeljkovic: I think the Red Wings might have the most intriguing tandem in the NHL. Husso is fresh off a breakout season with the St. Louis Blues. And Nedeljkovic just endured a year behind one of the worst NHL defenses I’ve seen in quite some time. The two netminders are different stylistically. Husso is very structured. Nedeljkovic plays with more flow and can jumpstart a breakout with his puckhandling. Both are looking to establish themselves as true No. 1 goaltenders in the NHL. There is motivation and opportunity aplenty in the Motor City.

Prospect round-up: Tuomisto plays 20:37 in TPS Turku win

Of Red Wings prospect-related note today:

In the Finnish Liiga, Antti Tuomisto finished even with 4 shots in 20:37 played as TPS Turku won 4-1 over JYP.

If he’s not in North America (he left the University of Denver after last season), at least he’s getting a fair amount of playing time.

DHN’s Allen reviews the Red Wings’ injury list

As noted by the Red Wings after Steve Yzerman’s presser this morning, the Red Wings’ GM stated that Andrew Copp would not make his Red Wings debut until sometime during the first week of the regular season, and Detroit Hockey Now’s Kevin Allen took note of Yzerman’s remarks regarding his injured players:

“I don’t anticipate (Copp) participating in the preseason games but I expect him ready to go in roughly a week, if not sooner, into the regular season,” Yzerman said as he met with media to discuss the start of training camp this week.

This Red Wings will be in Traverse City Thursday through Monday. The team will play its first preseason game next Tuesday at Pittsburgh. The following night they will play the Chicago Blackhawks at Little Caesars Arena.

According to Yzerman’s update, Walman will be back in the middle of November.  Fabbri and Pysyk won’t be back until after New Year’s Day.

“I anticipate — and it’s a cautious return for Robby — sometime in the New Year, sometime after Jan. 1, maybe Jan. 15,” Yzerman said.

Yzerman also said that Red Wings prospect Chase Pearson (140th overall in 2015) won’t be at training camp. “Chase is dealing with some personal things and is out indefinitely,” Yzerman said.

DHN’s Brown discusses potential fourth-line candidates

Detroit Hockey Now’s Nate Brown examines the players in the mix for spots on the Red Wings’ fourth line, presuming that Andrew Copp does return to the lineup healthily during the first week of the regular season:

Givani Smith: Smith is one of those guys who hasn’t really had a full chance to demonstrate what he brings to the table. Last season, he was one of the few Red Wings who exchanged in physical battles and was often out there doing what he could to agitate the opponents. His offensive game never really got going because he was either a healthy scratch or his role was to play “heavy” hockey.

This really feels like the opportunity for Smith to make his presence known.

Joe Veleno and Michael Rasmussen: Many once slotted Veleno in as a top six forward. The former 2018 first round pick is still only 22, but looks firmly cemented as a top nine forward. But the question around him is more about whether he’ll be on the wing or down the middle. The latter certainly seems the safer bet, but perhaps new coach Derek Lalonde sees something different.

The same goes for Rasmussen. The hulking forward really came into his own during the second half of the season and arguably was one of the best Red Wings on the roster during that stretch. He, too, can shuffle between wing and center, but seems the likelier option at this point to be anywhere from the second to the fourth line.
