Red Wings-Hurricanes quick take: Wings out-work and out-block the Canes

The Detroit Red Wings attempted to snap a 3-game losing streak while hosting the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night. The Red Wings trailed the Hurricanes by 6 points in the Wild Card standings, and Detroit needed to make up some ground.

The Wings’ first period wasn’t pretty, but Detroit played a tremendous final 2 periods’ worth of hockey, out-working, out-hustling, out-grinding and especially out-blocking the Carolina Hurricanes, winning 3-1.

Detroit blocked 31 Carolina Hurricanes attempts, with Danny DeKeyser blocking 7 shots alone, and 6 players blocking 3 shots apiece…

When shots got through to Jimmy Howard, Howard was excellent, stopping 28 of 29 shots, and at the other end of the ice, DeKeyser, Zetterberg and Daley scored goals on Scott Darling.

Khan: Wings need to get Green in a game

MLive’s Ansar Khan believes that the Red Wings need to get Mike Green healthy enough to skate so that his trade value isn’t negatively affected by his neck injury:

It is not considered serious. Green has participated in two full practices since then, including Friday.

But it could give pause to potential suitors, including the Lightning. Green, in the final year of his contract at $6 million, has agreed to waive his no-trade clause if a deal with Tampa Bay is agreed upon by Monday’s 3 p.m. deadline. Detroit’s final game before the deadline is Sunday at the New York Rangers.

Before Green is moved, other dominoes likely must fall, most notably Erik Karlsson, the superstar defenseman the Ottawa Senators are looking to move. He likely is the Lightning’s top target.

Ryan McDonagh of the Rangers also is in play. The Toronto Maple Leafs, another possible suitor for Green, reportedly are interested in McDonagh.

The Red Wings are hoping to get a late first-round pick for Green. They might settle for a combination of a second-round pick and prospects or multiple high picks that don’t include a first.

HSJ’s mailbag: on Ken Holland and more

From the Free Press’s Helene St. James’ mailbag:

General manager Ken Holland is in the last year of his contract, and there has been no talks with owner Chris Ilitch about an extension, but Holland goes back two decades with the family, so that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s on the way out. Maybe he slides into an advisory role with the Wings, as Jimmy Devellano did.

Holland has been focused on rebuilding the team for the past few years, hanging onto first-round picks since 2013 and keeping spots open for prospects (Svechnikov and Tyler Bertuzzi both were penciled in to start this season in Detroit, but were waylaid by injuries). I know Holland wants to keep working, either in Detroit or elsewhere. For those hoping to see Steve Yzerman take the GM reins, he is under contract with Tampa Bay through next season, and why leave a team he has built into a contender for years to come?

Red Wings-Hurricanes No Morning Skate Tweets and articles

The Detroit Red Wings host the Carolina Hurricanes this evening (7:00 PM EST on FSD/FS Carolinas/97.1 FM) at Little Caesars Arena, and tonight is “Hockey Is For Everyone” night at LCA:

The Red Wings hope to put a dent in the Hurricanes’ playoff hopes this evening, while Carolina hopes to snap an 0-3-and-1 streak minus Jordan Staal.

Detroit didn’t hold a morning skate on Saturday, choosing to rest up due to their 2-games-in-2-nights schedule (and the Wings are wrapping up a set of 10 games played over the course of 18 nights.

EDIT/UPDATE: never mind, it looks like the Wings “took an optional”…

Carolina didn’t hold a morning skate either, as they lost 6-1 to Pittsburgh on Friday and flew to Detroit late on Friday night:

Red Wings-Hurricanes set-up: Cranky Canes heading to Detroit with playoffs on their mind

The Detroit Red Wings hope to snap a 3-game losing streak as they host the Carolina Hurricanes this evening (7:00 PM EST on FSD/FS Carolinas/97.1 FM).

It is assumed that the Wings will have Mike Green back in the lineup as the Wings open a set of back-to-back games, with the Wings heading to New York to play the Rangers on Sunday.

Our friends from Carolina are going to be in a bit of a foul mood, and fresh off a Friday night loss: the 27-24-and-1 Hurricanes find themselves in an 0-3-and-1 stretch, with their latest loss coming in the form of a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Carolina is still very much in the hunt for a Wild Card spot (though they are highly unlikely to make a trade deadline addition) so they’re going to be highly motivated.

On Friday night, absent Jordan Staal (due to family issues), the Hurricanes lost big time to the Penguins, as noted by the Raleigh News & Observer’s Chip Alexander:

Coreau ready for another go with the Wings

Jared Coreau spoke with the Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan regarding his call-up and the disappointment he overcame after being demoted to Grand Rapids at the start of the season:

“At the start of the year, I’ll admit it, I was a little down not making the team,” said Coreau, who was promoted to the NHL earlier in the week when Petr Mrazek was traded to Philadelphia. “It’s natural. I’m a competitor and felt like I had lost, you could say.

“But you have to suck it up and come ready to play. You work for it all summer, you work countless hours, days, weeks and months, and sometimes it just doesn’t work out. But you have to keep working and at the end of the day, no one is going to be mad at you for not succeeding but they might be bad at you for not succeeding and then giving up. I would be mad at myself.”

Coreau spent part of last season with the Red Wings (5-4-3, 3.46 GAA, .887 SVS) when Jimmy Howard injured his knee, but starred in the spring when he helped lead Grand Rapids to the Calder Cup championship.

Coreau felt he’d done enough to land an NHL job, but with Howard and Mrazek both on the Red Wings’ roster, there wasn’t any room for a third goalie. Coreau cleared waivers, and found himself back with the Griffins, where he and the team didn’t get off to rousing starts.
“I was one game below .500, 7-8-2, at one point so I said to myself, ‘You have to get it going’,” said Coreau, 25, who has been part of the Red Wings’ organization since 2013. “If the opportunity does come, I want the Red Wings to believe in me that I do have the ability to play at this level, so I have to prove it in the AHL. That brought more intensity in the game and it paid off.”
Coreau was 20-10-4, with a 2.47 goals-against average and .916 save percentage in Grand Rapids this season.
