DetroitRedWings.com’s Jonathan Mills posted an article regarding Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman’s pre-training camp press conference today. Yzerman addressed the concept that he’s turned over a third of the roster over the course of the summer….
“I believe we’ll be a better hockey team this year, I expect us to be,” Yzerman said in a pre-camp Zoom call with the media on Wednesday. “Having said that, it can take some time for things to settle in, for everyone to get familiar with one another, for the coaches to get to know the players and how to best utilize them.”
When assessing what the Red Wings’ lineup might look like this season, Yzerman said a lot will be determined by players trying to earn, keep or find their place.
“It’s important they recognize there’s competition not only for jobs, but for ice time,” Yzerman said. “I believe that competition is really healthy and it’s going to push guys to perform. I believe good athletes, mentally strong guys, really enjoy that challenge.
“Some of the players have to recognize, ‘I got to perform. I might lose my spot on this line. I might lose my spot in the lineup.’ We got some depth at a lot of positions now. Hopefully, that translates to us being a better team as well.”
And he formulated his expectations for the team’s improvement thusly:
Yzerman, who’s entering his third year as Red Wings GM, said he wants to see Detroit continue developing its identity as a tough team to compete against.
“If our team can be a harder team to play against and be more competitive in games, that’s improvement for us,” Yzerman said. “That’s advancing for us.”

The Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan filed an evening notebook in which he discusses more highlights of Steve Yzerman’s pre-training camp press conference, and among Kulfan’s topics of interest are Yzerman’s remarks regarding the Red Wings’ younger players:
Forward Jonatan Berggren, 22, had 21 goals and 43 assists with the Griffins, and could be in consideration for an NHL roster spot with a good training camp.
“Jonatan had an outstanding year,” Yzerman said. “He adjusted well. I saw him in Detroit last week and he’s in excellent shape. He quietly went about his business (last season) and did well. I’m very interested to see him in the preseason. He’s an interesting one. He’s worked real hard and I’m real happy with his attitude and determination. He’s one for all of us to follow closely.”
Defenseman Simon Edvinsson, 19, the Wings’ 2021 first-round draft pick, will be in the running for a roster spot with the Wings. But Yzerman stressed Edvinsson’s age and North American pro inexperience are factors.
“Moritz (Seider) had the benefit of playing a year in the AHL (with Grand Rapids) and going over during the pandemic to Sweden and got an extra year of development before he stepped in,” Yzerman said. “Simon has a good chance, but I can’t sit here and definitively say he’ll be in the lineup on opening night.”
Yzerman wants to make sure Edvinsson is playing regularly this season, and playing in different situations.
“I don’t want him in and out of the lineup and not getting an opportunity on special teams, at least of the units,” Yzerman said. “We’ll figure out which level he’s ready for.”

… Sixty-Nine Players Hit the Ice from Sept. 22-26 in Traverse City …
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today released their training camp roster and schedule, comprised of 69 players who will hit the ice on Thursday, Sept. 22 at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City, Mich., for five days of camp before beginning their eight-game preseason schedule with a road game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
The Red Wings will bring 40 forwards, 21 defensemen and eight goaltenders to Traverse City to participate in daily on-ice practices. Following the team’s annual Red & White Game on Sunday, Sept. 25, the Red Wings will remain in Traverse City for one more day of practice before breaking camp to return to Detroit ahead of the exhibition slate, which is highlighted by home games against the Chicago Blackhawks (Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m.), Washington Capitals (Friday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m.), Pittsburgh Penguins (Monday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m.) and Toronto Maple Leafs (Friday, Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m.).
A limited number of tickets remain for select training camp events. Tickets for all events are available online at www.centreice.org and will also be sold on a first-come, first-served basis at the arena entrance on the day of each event. Ticket prices are as follows:
· Training Camp Practice (Thursday, Sept. 22): $10 standing-room, $20 reserved seating or mezzanine
· Training Camp Practice (Friday, Sept. 23): $10 standing-room, $20 reserved seating or mezzanine
