Raising funds to cover development camp

I haven’t mentioned the f-word (fundraising) in some time now, but I’m about to embark upon a 5-day endeavor covering the Red Wings’ summer development camp downtown, and I could use a hand.

Between gas costing $3.85 a gallon, the associated costs of dry cleaning, food and miscellaneous expenses, I was hoping to ask that I might be able to raise about $500, or $100 a day.

Given that I will be writing from home (there’s a 1-hour commute of about 45 miles each way) and have no accommodations expenses, there’s no need to raise $ for that, but this week is going to cost me money, and I’d really like to break even if that is possible.

If you’re willing to lend a hand, http://paypal.me/TheMalikReport will send you to Paypal, and if you’re willing to lend a longer-term hand, my Patreon account is available here: https://www.patreon.com/themalikreport

We are going to have a longer discussion about fundraising soon, because the State of Michigan has written into law a work requirement for Medicaid recipients starting in January of 2019, and I’m about $600 a month short of being able to meet that requirement. I can’t do this job if it’s going to cost me my health insurance. :/

Anyway, it’s going to be a busy week, and I hope you enjoy the coverage. As usual, if you have any questions regarding players or want me to focus on certain individuals, please comment, talk to me on Twitter, Facebook or via email.

Off to the rink!

Monroe: Former Griffins, Walleye goaltender Jordan Pearce enjoying his post-hockey medical career

The Toledo Blade’s Mark Monroe penned a superb article regarding former Toledo Walleye and Grand Rapids Griffins goaltender Jordan Pearce, who has graduated from medical school:

Pearce played parts of four seasons for the Walleye before retiring from professional hockey in 2013. Since then he attended four years of medical school at Wake Forest University before graduating.

One of the most diverse characters in Walleye history, the native of Anchorage, Alaska, comes from a family of rugged outdoorsmen. Pearce also is a certified pilot and devoted family man.

At age 31, Pearce is now about to be in a residency to become an orthopedic surgeon.

“It’s been good,” Pearce said. “The lessons I learned and the experience I gained playing pro hockey have definitely been helpful at medical school. I learned how to handle expectations and how to be a professional.”

Pearce said in Toledo he learned to build trust between himself and his teammates, coaches, and the team’s fans.

“There are pretty close parallels between operating and playing hockey at a high level,” he said. “There are expectations that you will do well and you have to handle that pressure and develop trust.”

A bit more about the Jamie Daniels Foundation’s partnership with Children’s Hospital of Michigan

As noted on Monday morning, the Jamie Daniels Foundation has partnered with Children’s Hospital of Michigan, and Fox 2 Detroit posted a video about the announcement (as did WDIV)…

And the Free Press’s Jeff Seidel has more regarding the news:

About a month ago, Ken Daniels met with representatives from the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation. Daniels had the passion and mission to make a difference — but he didn’t know how to run a foundation. And besides, he is on the road constantly, announcing Wings games.

Meanwhile, the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation has the expertise and infrastructure to run a program like this. It was a perfect marriage.

“For the first time, since his passing, a very dark cloud began to dissipate,” Daniels said.

This collaboration is still in the early stages. They are still trying to figure out how to raise money and awareness.

Next summer, they have tentative plans to hold a celebrity roast. Mickey Redmond, Daniels’ on-air partner during Wings broadcasts, volunteered to be the first victim.

“He said he’s got big shoulders and can handle it,” Daniels said.

A Mickey Redmond roast? Bingo, bango! Slow it down right here, gang. That’s going to be fun.

Down the road, Daniels hopes the foundation can support families trying to get help. “Because it can be expensive,” Daniels said.

Seidel also continues, and his column is a moving one.

Update: Ken Daniels also appeared on Monday’s Detroit Tigers broadcast to discuss his foundation’s mission:

Khan: Wings don’t qualify Renouf, Nastasiuk

Per MLive’s Ansar Khan, the Red Wings have chosen not to retain the services of Dan Renouf or Zach Nastasiuk:

The Red Wings opted not to tender qualifying offers to defenseman Dan Renouf and right wing Zach Nastasiuk, making them unrestricted free agents. They have qualified right wing Matt Puempel, retaining his rights after he picked up 54 points (22 goals, 32 assists) in 57 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Here’s the Red Wings’ summer development camp roster

My apologies for the delay on this one:

RED WINGS ANNOUNCE 2018 DEVELOPMENT CAMP ROSTER
… First-Round Picks Zadina, Veleno, Rasmussen and Cholowski Slated to Attend Sold-out Camp …

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today announced the roster for their 2018 Development Camp, which will be held at the BELFOR Training Center inside Little Caesars Arena from Tuesday, June 26 to Saturday, June 30. The camp roster currently consists of 23 forwards, 13 defensemen and seven goaltenders.

The Red Wings will have four former first-round picks in attendance in forwards Michael Rasmussen (9th overall in 2017), Joe Veleno (30th overall in 2018) and Filip Zadina (6th overall in 2018) and defenseman Dennis Cholowski (20th overall in 2016). Rasmussen led the Red Wings in goals during the 2017 preseason and recovered from injury to produce 59 points (31-28-59) in 47 regular-season games for the Western Hockey League’s Tri-City Americans in 2017-18, before amassing 33 points (16-17-33) in just 14 postseason games to help Tri-City upset higher-seeded teams with back-to-back sweeps before being eliminated in the WHL’s Conference Finals. Veleno similarly finished the season on a high note, racking up 48 points (16-32-48) in 33 games with the Drummondville Voltigeurs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League after starting the season with 31 points (6-25-31) in 31 games as captain of the Saint John Sea Dogs. Veleno was the first player in QMJHL history to be granted Exceptional Player Status by Hockey Canada to allow him to enter the league as a 15-year-old, a year earlier than the league’s minimum age of 16.
