Red Wings-Sabres quick take: BANG BANG, Raymond Frei!

The Detroit Red Wings attempted to build a 2-game winning streak at the expense of the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.

The Wings sort of rope-a-doped their way to a 3-2 overtime victory. Detroit surrendered the first goal, a Dylan Cozens goal 5:05 into the 2nd, but the Wings exploded at the game’s halfway point, with Carter Rowney and Pius Suter scoring 2 goals in 1:14, and, after the Sabres scored the game-tying goal with only 1:37 remaining, Lucas Raymond made amends for the point stolen by Buffalo goalie Dustin Tokarski, skating into the Sabres end and scoring himself all of 26 seconds into overtime.

It wasn’t the most entertaining game, but Detroit won 3-2 because of three massive goals for, and the Wings are now off until Tuesday and Wednesday, when they head into Boston and then host Seattle, respectively.

The teams dressed the following lineups…

In the 1st period…

Namestnikov, Rasmussen and Erne started opposite Murray, Cozens and Okposo, with Oesterle and Seider on defense, and Nedeljkovic opposing Tokarski in goal.

The puck dropped between Rasmussen and Murray at 7:08 PM, and Oesterle and Seider fared the opening draw win, chipped it into the Sabres’ zone, and Detroit chased. The Sabres took over and worked the puck out to center, but Seider and Oesterle regained control, cycled deep…

And the Wings regrouped out at center ice some 45 seconds into the 1st with Larkin’s line on ice.

Larkin cycled and circled around the goal, fed Bertuzzi in the slot, and he fired a shot wide of the net;

Bertuzzi took the rebound, fed Hronek at the point, and he fired a second shot into Tokarski that was gobbled up for a faceoff 2:14 into the 1st.

Detroit’s second line lost the next draw, and Rasmus Asplund and company chipped and charged into the Wings’ zone, but Staal cleared the puck down ice, Smith and Suter and Fabbri forechecked, Buffalo pushed into the Wings’ zone and Nedeljkovic stopped the Sabres’ first shot 1:45 into the 1st.

Buffalo attempted to sustain their cycle vs. Suter, Lindstrom and Staal, and Detroit was able to wrest the puck free, chip the puck into Buffalo’s zone, and Tokarski played the puck back up ice, affording the Sabres a short dalliance with the puck, a re-set at center, and Hinostroza a shot on Nedeljkovic.

Buffalo buzzed in the Wings’ zone to some extent, but Gagner, Rowney and Zadina defended fairly well with Hronek and Leddy, and Detroit ultimately cleared their zone and afforded Zadina a push deep with the puck.

The Wings’ 4 lines hit the ice by 3:30 of the 1st, when Larkin’s line took its second shift, and Seider and Oesterle came back to negate an Okposo line rush.

Buffalo won the next draw, but Oesterle and Seider worked the puck out to Bertuzzi and company at center, Detroit worked the puck deep, turned it over and re-set at center ice;

Buffalo and Detroit settled in as the 4:20 mark passed in the 1st, with Buffalo carrying the majority of puck possession (it was a small majority) and they were also winning the majority of early faceoffs, so Detroit was pressed back into its own zone, if not the neutral zone, for most of the time.

The Wings’ best chances came on a possession and cycle from the Rasmussen line, with Erne firing a shot from the high slot wide, and Hronek firing a blueline shot into Tokarski around 5:35 into the game;

Jokiharju got hit very hard by Givani Smith forechecking thereafter;

A minute later Zadina cut in alone 1 on 3 and deked and dangled his way through traffic, firing a sneaky shot in on Tokarski, who toe-saved the puck, ushering the first TV timeout.

At 6:50, the Red Wings led in shots 4-2 and attempts 6-3, but Buffalo led in faceoffs 3-1 (75%).

As play resumed, Oesterle and Seider helped the Wings control a faceoff, but the Sabres pushed the puck into the Wings’ zone, and Eakin stole the puck from Seider, but Zadina supported his defenseman and cleared the zone;

Buffalo’s Cozens nearly swiped the puck from Hronek for a goal-scoring chance, but Detroit scrambled back after the turnover and cleared their zone with Larkin’s line on the ice;

Namestnikov made a nice little play to wrap the puck around the goal, and when his wraparound failed, Rasmussen and Erne battled the puck out to the slot, where Erne fired a slot shot in on Tokarski;

Nedeljkovic had to make a smart glove save on Zemgus Girgensons with 9:21 expired in the 1st as Buffalo’s top line flexed its muscles;

Nedeljkovic had to make a second glove save on a Sabres point shot off another defensive zone faceoff loss;

Overall, as the 10-minute mark passed, the Sabres were hanging around and hanging around some more in a game where the Wings should have been pouncing on a tired Sabres team that played on Friday night.

Off a bad defensive zone change, Buffalo broke in 3-on-2, but Detroit’s Nick Leddy made a really nice play to clear the zone;

Hronek was hounded by Bjork and struggled to clear his zone with 8:15 remaining;

A collision between Dahlin and Namestnikov felled Dahlin for a moment, and then Smith was dumped en route to a Sabres cycle in the Wings’ zone, with no harm yielding no foul;

Hayden and Hinostroza were stifled by Fabbri and Oesterle on a 2-on-2 opportunity;

Cozens then blazed in and hit the goalpost behind Nedeljkovic, but the puck stayed out with 6:45 remaining;

Off another rush, Buffalo generated possession and control, but Bertuzzi stole the puck from Okposo, and Raymond chipped the puck out of play with 5:59 remaining;

At 14:01, the shots were 6-5 Detroit, attempts 8-8 and faceoffs 5-3 Buffalo.

When play resumed after a TV timeout, Detroit won a faceoff, dumped, chased, re-set at center and went offside at 14:15.

Off a broken play, Smith was stifled by Tokarski on the cycle, Staal fed Lindstrom with a lateral pass and Lindstrom chipped a hard shot in on the Sabres’ goalie with 5:16 remaining in the 1st;

Detroit iced the puck with 4:50 remaining, and Buffalo mucked and ground a lost faceoff into some zone time, regrouped at center, and forced Detroit to chip and change as the Sabres re-set in their own zone, changed lines…

But Larkin, Bertuzzi and Raymond worked a FINE three on two together that nearly converted…

Buffalo continued to pressure the Red Wings with 3:15 remaining, and Dahlin fired a sneaky shot in as he skated into the slot, with Nedeljkovic stopping the first shot, the rebound from the high slot, and helping the Wings clear the zone with 2:45 remaining;

Rasmussen got dinged by a rather VICIOUS Sabres slash to the back of his leg as a Staal shot whistled by him and hit Tokarski, so Namestnikov stepped up and came in to inform Robert Hagg that his “BC Two-Hander” was not appreciated.

As a result, Rowney (subbing for Rasmussen, who headed to the penalty box) and Hagg sat for interference and roughing, respectively, at 17:49, ushering in a 4 on 4.

On the 4 on 4, Detroit was unable to score off their first foray into the offensive zone;

Nedeljkovic nearly surrendered a goal by making an ill-advised play on the puck in front of his own net;

Larkin and Bertuzzi went off 50 seconds into a capable shift, and Olofsson, Dahlin and Thompson did a great job cycling deep, forcing Dahlin to take a penalty for bumping Nedeljkovic at 18:57.

On the power play, Zadina, Suter, Hronek and Leddy cycled, Zadina got two great chances on Tokarski, and Buffalo cleared the zone;

Fabbri, Larkin, Bertuzzi and Hronek took over, cycled, and when the 4 on 3 became a 5 on 4, Buffalo cleared the zone, ending the period.

In the 2nd period…

Detroit began with 57 seconds of power play time, 5 on 4.

Bertuzzi, Larkin, Fabbri, Seider and Raymond drew in for the opening faceoff, the Wings lost it, and Zemgus Girgensons played catch with the puck, chased it out to center and burned 20 ticks off;

Seider and Raymond did retain possession, and send the puck into the zone, but Raymond’s pass to Bertuzzi flubbed, Detroit regrouped at center, and Bertuzzi skated in 3 on 2 with Raymond and Fabbri, with Bert sending a shot into Tokarski;

Buffalo charged up the other way, and Detroit parried the Sabres’ possession thanks to a strong backcheck by Seider.

Buffalo then took over in the Wings’ zone off a faceoff, Leddy blocked one shot, and Detroit broke out, with Erne passing a puck to Rasmussen, who was blocked off by the Sabres.

Buffalo took over and skated into Detroit’s zone, where one shot hit a Red Wings leg, a second shot hit Carter Rowney, and Detroit emerged, with Zadina, Gagner and Rowney attempting to set up in the offensive zone. Their attempts were unsuccessful.

Off an icing call with 3:27 gone, Buffalo tied up a draw, Detroit regrouped, and Seider chipped the puck down ice, Tokarski negated a second icing call, and Detroit afforded Buffalo a push out to center ice, but Larkin, Seider and Bertuzzi chipped, chased, and Larkin and Bertuzzi ultimately bounced the puck back to Hronek, and BERTUZZI AND LARKIN BOTH FIRED SHOTS AT TOKARSKI, BUT THE SABRES’ GOALIE STOOD TALL..And Larkin hit Bertuzzi’s skate with his second shot.

Rasmussen then blocked a shot, skated up ice with Namestnikov 2 on 1, and Namestsnikov missed the net, affording Buffalo a 3-on-2 going the other way…Where Dylan Cozens redirected a fine pass from Brett Murray to make it 1-0 Buffalo on a 3-on-2 opposite Lindstrom and Staal, who both got caught standing around.

Cozens wide open in front tucks a redirection to open the scoring!@BuffaloSabres | #LetsGoBuffalo pic.twitter.com/SVxrJWfzwY— MSG Networks (@MSGNetworks) November 28, 2021

Brett Murray and Kyle Okposo got the assists on the Cozens redirect at 5:04. 1-0 Buffalo.

The Sabres continued to cycle into the Wings’ zone with possession of the puck, and while Lindstrom and Staal got the call to go over the boards with Larkin, Bertuzzi and Raymond, the Wings looked flat, and needed someone to step forward.

Cozens got another scoring chance with 7:13 gone in the 2nd, and Nedeljkovic made the save for the Flat Wings.

When play resumed at 7:20, after a TV timeout, Detroit iced the puck, Buffalo won the offensive zone draw, and forced Nedeljkovic to make a stop, fired the second attempt wide, and Detroit borke out, but could not generate a shot in on Tokarski.

Instead, Buffalo skated in 3 on 3, Okposo dropped the puck back door, missed, Bryson and Jokiharju cycled, and forced Detroit to set up in its own zone and then ice the puck with 8:29 gone.

With Buffalo chocking the life out of the game, Nedeljkovic had to make a couple of big stops as Skinner weas stiffled;

Larkin fed Bertuzzi, and Bertuzzi fanned on the 2-on-1 chance, fell into the boards, and recovered;

But Hronek’s shot hit Raymond, the Sabres skated the other way, and Bertuzzi headed to the bench;

Thankfully, Buffalo flubbed a puck at center ice, Rowney fed Lindstromm, Rowney went to the front of the net, and Rowney and Zadina were pushed into Tokarski, who kicked the puck into his own net.

Detroit tied the game 1-1 at 9:56 from Carter Rowney, assisted by Gustav Lindstrom and Sam Gagner.

Detroit continued to pepper the Sabres’ net…

And Pius Suter took the rebound of a point shot and jabbed it through Dustin Tokarski with Givani Smith at the top of the Sabres’ crease, giving Detroit a 2-1 lead at 11:15 of the 2nd.

It only took 1:19 for the #RedWings to get another one, this one from Pius Suter. #LGRW@pius_suter pic.twitter.com/aDEeSOiHOy— Bally Sports Detroit (@BallySportsDET) November 28, 2021

Suter made it 2-1 at 11:15, unassisted…AND assists were added to Seider and Smith during the intermission.

All of a sudden, Detroit had a lot of life and a lot of pluck. 2 goals in 1:19 helped.

On the second post-goal shift, Hronek battled his way out of trouble, Raymond and Bertuzzi battled their way through center, Raymond chipped, Erne and Rasmussen chased, Namestnikov tangled up a puck battle, and Detroit was called offside with 7:17 remaining.

Detroit then had some struggles in the defensive zone as Skinner and company pushed some shots on Nedeljkovic, but the Red Wings’ goalie stood tall, Seider and Rasmussen played the puck to Oesterle, who fed Erne, and he blasted a shot off a Buffalo stick and out of play;

At the third TV timeout of the middle of the 2nd period, Detroit led in shots 12-10 in the 2nd and 23-17 overall (at 14:01), and attempts were 31-29 Detroit; hits were 11-3 Detroit; faceoffs were 17-14 (55%) Detroit.

When play finally resumed, Detroit won the offensive zone draw, Bertuzzi fired a shot wide of the net, Seider held the zone at the offensive zone blue line, and Larkin took a Raymond feed and blasted a slap shot into the glass off a Sabre.

Buffalo got their chances with possession, and Nedeljkovic had to be steady, but Seider, Oesterle and the Larkin line were fairly good some 15 minutes into the 2nd, restoring possession and cycling deep as Hronek fed Raymond but hit his skate in front of Tokarski;

Suter also did a nice job of jabbing at Tokarski for the puck, separating glove from goalie, but the puck remained in Tokarski’s glove as it fell to the ice.

Fabbri, Suter and Smith were feeling their competitive juices flowing, and Suter HIT THE GOALPOST off a great cycle with Smith and Fabbri;

Gagner and Zadina and Rowney had a good shift, too, cycling a bit, forcing Buffalo to fire the puck down ice on Nedeljkovic, and the Wings cycle deep once again, stealing possession once, twice, thrice as Rasmussen took the puck;

And Filip Hronek was hit hard by Kyle Okposo, generating a power play at 17:28 for a boarding infraction.

On the power play, the Red Wings lost the initial draw, re-set at center, Seider gloved the puck to keep it in, he fed Raymond, Raymond fed Bertuzzi down low, Raymond took the right half boards position, Seider slid a shot center ice center point and Bertuzzi chipped it wide of the open net;

Raymond and Seider kept the puck in, Larkin fed Fabbri and Bertuzzi, cycled, Raymond worked the right half wall, found Bertuzzi in the slot, and he was stopped by Tokarski;

Buffalo chipped the puck down ice, Seider regrouped, Fabbri fed Erne, and Suter was stopped by Tokarski;

Suter, Hronek (healthy), Leddy, Zadina and Erne set up on the 2nd unit, zadina and Erne battled the puck to Hronek, Leddy and Hronek played catch, and Detroit set up as the PP ended, Eakin blocked a Wings pass, but Detroit regrouped at center, Zadina looked for Hronek…

And Zadina was stopped with 6.6 remaining in the 2nd period.

The Wings mucked back the final offensive zone draw to Leddy, who chipped a shot at the net, and was stopped, as was Bertuzzi’s rebound, so the period ended with Detroit leading 2-1.

In the 3rd period…

The puck dropped at 8:58 PM and the Red Wings lost the draw, Rasmus Dahlin tried to clear the zone, but Rasmussen, Namestnikov and Suter held the zone, fired a shot off on Tokarski, and then Buffalo chugged into Detroit’s zone and fired a point shot in on Nedeljkovic, who held on for a faceoff at 26 seconds.

Larkin, Hronek and Raymond cycled into the Sabres’ zone, Leddy and Bertuzzi kept the puck in the zone, but Buffalo cleared, Bertuzzi skated back into the zone, and surrendered control to the Sabres, who chipped and chased;

Larkin found Bertuzzi going the other way, and the refs called Colin Miller for slashing Bertuzzi in the armpits at 1:07.

ON the power play, the Red Wings won the initial faceoff, but flubbed the puck, surrendering possession to the Sabres;

Leddy, Hronek and Zadina cycled into the Sabres’ zone, Hronek was blocked off, and Buffalo cleared the zone with 40 seconds gone in the PP;

Leddy found Zadina, Suter fed Hronek at the blueline, and Leddy fumbled and had to defend Rasmus Asplund as he rushed into the Wings’ zone;

Zadina battled with Erne and Rasmussen into Buffalo’s zone, but Seider could not hold the offensive blueline;

Larkin skated up with Bertuzzi, Raymond gave and went, Bertuzzi fed Larkin in the high slot, Seider fed Raymond and he blasted a shot wide, Raymond held the line, fed Larkin, cycled, and as the PP expired, Fabbri helped the Wings retain possession deep.

Raymond cycled, Bertuzzi and Seider exchanged the puck, and Oesterle could not hold the offensive zone line, so the teams changed at 3:35.

Skinner and Olofsson were blocked off by Oesterle on a 2-on-1 rush for the Sabres;

Gagner, Namestnikov, dekeing through a Sabres player’s legs, and Rasmussen fed Staal for a point shot that was blasted through traffic at Tokarski, who made a smart stop at 4:18;

Detroit faced some pressure from the Sabres as the period hit the 5-minute mark, but, for the most part, Buffalo was as low-energy as the Wings were, so both teams seemed content to let the clock run and “wait for their chances.”

Okposo did do a great job of generating a scoring chance 2 on 3, but Detroit’s Nedeljkovic made a smart stop and Detroit’s defense cleared the puck out of trouble;

The shots were 4-2 Detroit in the 3rd, at the first TV timeout of the 3rd period, at 6:14.

When play resumed, Bertuzzi was fed superbly well by Larkin, but was stopped by Tokarski once, twice, and a third time when Larkin jabbed the puck toward the goal line himself;

Nedeljkovic then made a sloppy stop at the other end of the ice, but the Wings sorted out their defensive issues and cleared the zone once, forced Buffalo back to their own blueline, and Rasmussen, Erne and Fabbri took over for a bit;

Buffalo managed to generate some zone time in the Wings’ end some 8:30 into the 3rd, and Leddy and Hronek worked with Suter and Gagner and Rowney to keep Buffalo to the outside;

Staal bumped Girgensons in the Wings’ zone, Lindstrom fed Fabbri at the Wings’ line, Staal was checked pinching, Lindstrom stepped up in his wake, and Bryson fired a shot wide with 10 minutes remaining in regulation;

Larkin’s line took over with Bertuzzi and Raymond, they were backed in, and Seider blocked a shot, Larkin cycled deep, Bertuzzi fed Raymond, he dropped to Oesterle, and Larkin nearly tipped the puck in;

Detroit regrouped, larkin deked and dangled, Oesterle got another shot, Raymond regrouped, found Larkin, Seider deked deep, for Raymond, Oesterle’s shot was wide, and Buffalo cleared with 8:45 remaining;

Detroit changed lines, and Leddy, Rasmussen and company chipped and did not chase, with an icing negated due to Tokarski playing the puck.

Another TV timeout in a scattershot game yielded a Red Wings possession attempt in on the Sabres’ zone, where Smith, Suter and Fabbri skated deep, lost control of the puck, and Buffalo went the other way;

Zadina cleared the zone, however, with 7:15 remaining, and Detroit parried the Sabres’ next rush, with Rowney hacking and hooking Hayden and getting away with it.

Buffalo continued to press, however, and Detroit was increasingly on its heels as the game progressed.

Buffalo was chipping away at the Wings’ advantage, and Detroit was surrendering territory and possession to the Sabres because Nedeljkovic was good and the Wings were keeping Buffalo to the perimeter for the most part.

Bertuzzi blocked a shot with the inside of his leg, and Detroit got called for icing with 5:33 left.

Larkin won the defensive zone draw, but Buffalo chipped the puck back in, Nedeljkovic helped Staal and Larkin clear the zone, and Detroit changed and went offside with 5:12 remaining, yielding…another TV timeout.

When play resumed, Rasmussen, Namestnikov and Erne battled but lost an offensive zone draw, Skinner looped back and Dahlin fired a shot off a Wing (thankfully) in the slot;

With 4:25 remaining, Detroit changed and watched Buffalo chip and chase, with Nedeljkovic playing the puck to Oesterle, Detroit’s Rowney battled the puck deeper, and Suter could not capture the puck, so Buffalo chipped, Oesterle battled Bjork, Seider settled the puck behind the Wings’ net and Detroit changed again;

Fabbri raced into the Sabres’ zone alone, gave up the puck, and Raymond nad Larkin battled, Fabbri lost control, Bertuzzi came over the boards off a Sabres rush, and Bertuzzi chipped a shot attempt wide of the net;

Okposo and Bertuzzi battled, Bertuzzi was dumped, and the Sabres iced the puck with 2:56 remaining.

Buffalo iced the puck again, so with 2:49 remaining, Detroit won an offensive zone draw, Namestnikov fed Rasmussen and Tokarski made an AMAZING stop;

Gagner worked with the gents for the offensive zone draw, and stayed out for the shift;

With 2:08 remaining, Rasmussen chipped and changed, so Buffalo took over, Dahlin and Jokiharju worked together, and Nedeljkovic stopped a long shot…

Buffalo called timeout with 1:52 remaining, and pulled Tokarski.

6 on 5, the first faceoff was not dropped fairly, but the second one went to Buffalo, and Nedeljkovic had to stop a shot after a block helped…

But the Sabres were able to tip a point shot where Dahlin fed Jokiharju, he shot the puck on net and Jeff Skinner tipped the puck over Nedeljkovic to make it 2-2 with 1:37 remaining.

Skinner made it 2-2 at 18:23 from Jokiharju and Dahlin.

Raymond worked a shift with Suter and Fabbri post-goal, and Fabbri was cross-checked sans penalty, Raymond and Suter could not hold the zone, and Leddy worked the puck deep, Hronek fed Raymond, but he was boxed out, and Buffalo skated into the Wings’ zone.

They were repelled, Rasmussen and Erne and Nedeljkovic cycled, and Buffalo worked the puck deep into Detroit’s zone where the game’s third period seemed destined to end;

But Namestnikov skated deep into Buffalo’s zone and cycled as the third period expired.
