Red Wings-Sabres quick take: Suter, Bertuzzi, Raymond, Seider push Wings to come-back OT win

The Detroit Red Wings attempted to snap a 4-game winless skid as they took on the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.

The Detroit Red Wings probably didn’t earn their win, fumbling a 1-0 lead into a 3-1 deficit heading into the 3rd period, but the Red Wings’ talent took over, with Tyler Bertuzzi scoring 2 3rd-period goals, and Moritz Seider scoring his first NHL goal to make it a 4-3 overtime victory.

Detroit is arriving. Seider, Raymond, Bertuzzi, Larkin are high end. They need to hit pretty big on 4 more draft picks to play or use to big game trade hunt; the have enough solid guys to fill out the rest. they are ready to add UFAs. Just got to make the right bet. https://t.co/xRZcZ8F2Eh— Bucci Mane (@Buccigross) November 7, 2021

The Red Wings got going on a first-shift goal by Pius Suter, assisted by Lucas Raymond and Tyler Bertuzzi, but Buffalo crawled back into the 1st period, had a huge second, scoring 2 goals, and by the time Arttu Ruotsalainen had scored the 3-1 marker some 6:08 into the 3rd, it felt like the game was over.

Instead, Tyler Bertuzzi was given two great feeds Danny DeKeyser and then Pius Suter–set up by Lucas Raymond both times–as Detroit scored 2 goals in 1:30, and in overtime, Moritz Seider came off the bench (on a sketchy change) and made no mistake on the feed from Bertuzzi.

That being said, without the play of Alex Nedeljkovic, who stopped 29 of 32 Sabres shots, the Red Wings played far too sloppily and loosely defensively to win. Detroit just earned its luck the old-fashioned way–they lucked their way out to some extent, and earned the rest because the Red Wings were more talented than the Sabres.

In no small part thanks to Bertuzzi, Raymond and Seider.

The starters and scratches were as follows…

In the 1st period…

The Wings started their makeshift first line of Tyler Bertuzzi, Pius Suter and Lucas Raymond with Nick Leddy and Filip Hronek on defense, and Alex Nedeljkovic in goal.

Suter drew in opposite Vinnie Hinostroza and won the faceoff to Nick Leddy, Filip Hronek chipped and chased, and the Sabres took over, but the Sabres then turned over the puck, Tyler Bertuzzi swiped the puck out front, Lucas Raymond jammed the puck into Tokarski, he lost the puck loose and Pius Suter jabbed it in at 16 seconds of the 1st period.

Pius Suter scored from Lucas Raymond and Tyler Bertuzzi at 16 seconds of the 1st period, on the Wings’ first shot. 1-0.

Buffalo won the ensuing faceoff, attempted to wrap the puck around via a Cody Eakin jab, and Nedeljkovic stood firm;

Pysyk blasted ah heavy shot wide of the net as the Sabres continued to pressure the Wings, but Raymond and Leddy bailed out the defense, Detroit cleared the zone, and Veleno, Fabbri and Zadina came over the boards, with Seider and DeKeyser on defense.

Buffalo attempted to force a turnover again with a heavy forecheck, but Veleno, Fabbri and a pinching Moritz Seider forced Tokarski to make a stop at 1:45 of the 1st, making his first save of the game.

Erne, Smith and Rasmussen came out for an offensive zone faceoff, lost the draw, and Nedeljkovic reversed flow on a Buffalo dump-in, Detroit’s defense regrouped at center, and Oesterle cycled to Erne, he fed the puck out front, and Anders Bjork blocked the pass to Rasmussen;

Oesterle fed Stephens, who tried to thread the puck in for Vladislav Namestnikov, but he was blocked off;

Seider helped Stephens and Namestnikov chip the puck deep, and they were repelled, and some 3:15 into the 1st period, all four lines had touched the ice.

Buffalo pressed the Wings pretty heavily with their forecheck, but Detroit was dominating possession and control of the puck, affording Detroit a respite from Buffalo’s big, physical forwards.

Joe Veleno fed Fabbri and then, in turn, Filip Zadina fired a heavy shot in on Tokarski, who stopped Zadina’s one-timer;

Oesterle looked very good playing in place of Troy Stecher;

Smith, DeKeyser, Seider and company cycled some 5:27 into the 1sts, giving Smith the opportunity to lay on the body;

Ruotsalainen got a good shot off on Nedeljkovic, who was stout in the net;

Detroit’s forecheck was giving the Sabres some fits, and the Wings’ center ice game was good as well, but Buffalo did get some chances, with Nedeljkovic standing tall in the Wings’ net.

Detroit led in shots 5-4 at 6:34 of the 1st period.

When the Bertuzzi-Suter-Raymond line took to the ice again, they at least caused some chaos around the Sabres’ net on a short shift;

Fabbri, Zadina and Veleno looked good, too, playing efficient and aggressive hockey;

Stephens raced in and fed Namestnikov for an easy tap-in, and Namestnikov chipped the puck wide, over-skating it some 7:40 into the 1st;

Skinner fed Asplund off a bad turnover in the Wings’ zone, and Hronek and Leddy got caught by the Sabres’ pair of forwards, but Nedeljkovic made a big save at 7:52;

Nedeljkovic was active as usual, and sometimes that was useful, and sometimes that was frustrating, as Buffalo was able to pounce on the puck and cycle deep in Detroit’s zone, even with Seider and DeKeyser on the ice;

Again, the Wings’ top line of Bertuzzi, Suter and Raymond were impactful, forcing Buffalo to defend the net in front of Tokharski as the trio buzzed with the help of Oesterle and Staal;

Fabbri tried to beat the Sabres 1-on-4 some 10:20 into the 1st, but Fabbri is not Connor McDavid;

Detroit and Buffalo were exchanging hits and jabs in the offensive zone;

Tage Thompson was easily stood up by Moritz Seider, though Seider is 3 inches shorter than the 6’7″ Thompson;

Things got a little more physical as the period progressed, and Buffalo was more than happy to hack and whack, with Staal getting hit hard by a Sabre and taking a long time to get up;

As Buffalo began to take over puck possession some 13:40 into the 1st, Detroit began to back into its own zone, and the Wings were losing faceoffs, too, which had been a persistent problem throughout the year.

Detroit was able to clear the puck, but that was about it for a good three or four minutes. Detroit at least wasn’t icing the puck, but, as the period hit the 15-minute mark, Nedeljkovic had to stop Okposo and Girgensons charging the net with only Seider back to stop them.

Zadina, Fabbri and Suter managed to cycle and generate a TREMENDOUS chance in which Fabbri chipped a heavy shot in on Tokarski, but the Sabres’ goaltender made a big stop;

Rasmussen worked with Smith and Erne as the lines hit the blender’s on-off switch, and Tokarski made a big stop on Erne slithering a shot through a screen;

15:00 into the 1st, the shots were 9-8 Detroit; attempts 12-12; hits 5-4 Detroit; giveaways 2-2, takeaways 0-0, blocked shots 4-3 Detroit, faceoffs 9-3 Detroit (75%).

When Detroit and Buffalo resumed play after the TV timeout, Erne, Smith and Rasmussen did a fine job of working the cycle;

But Buffalo generated a scoring chance off the linesman keeping the puck in, and Nedeljkovic had to make a goal-line stand to stop the puck about 16:15 into the 1st;

Suter, Bertuzzi and Raymond reunited, and they worked with Seider and DeKeyser, but the Wings were working the match-up more than they were working line-by-line, and that disrupted the flow that the Wings were able to achieve.

Caggiula missed on a fine scoring chance with 17:15 gone in the 1st;

Detroit was turning the puck over, and Tage Thompson ripped a hard shot on net that Nedeljkovic windmill-stopped;

Detroit just struggled toward the end of the 1st at turning over pucks, and Thompson drew a penalty as Robby Fabbri headed to the box for tripping with 1:49 left in the 1st.

On the penalty-kill, Michael Rasmussen lost the initial faceoff, but Girgensons broke his stick, affording Detroit a clearing attempt;

Buffalo cycled back in deep, worked the puck tto the point, and Miller, Cozens and Okposo generated a shot that Nedeljkovic had to stop;

Miller fired a second shot in on Nedeljkovic;

Okposo fired a shot wide from the slot;

Namestnikov stole the puck from Bryson and cleared the zone with about 1:45 gone in the PK;

Buffalo entered the zone, cycled, Dahin found Butcher, and Buffalo got a final shot in on Nedeljkovic that was stopped off Skinner…

And the period ended with Detroit holding 11 more seconds over on a PK to start the 2nd period.

In the 2nd period…

The Red Wings began the period with 11 seconds of penalty-kill time, and after fumbling and bumbling their way to the 1st intermission, Detroit needed to come out hard.

With Robby Fabbri in the box, Mitchell Stephens lost the initial faceoff at center ice, Buffalo chipped and chased, and Detroit’s Stephens cleared the puck down ice, ending the penalty.

Nedeljkovic blocked a Thompson shot with a poke check, and as the Sabres took over in the Wings’ zone, Detroit had to regroup and re-set;

Hronek and Leddy were chased out of their own zone and into Buffalo’s, where Raymond’s blind pass did not work, but Veleno helped Leddy recover, and some 1:33 into the 2nd, Buffalo stole the puck, charged deep, cycled to the point, and Miller fed Bryson, Buffalo cycled to the half boards, Okposo circled the nett, and Nedeljkovic stopped Girgensons in front.

Long story long, Detroit got backed into its own zone, and was making “leaky” mistakes;

Off the next faceoff, Hagg got a good shot off that was blocked, and Buffalo began to cycle in the Wings’ zone, only to be repelled by Rasmussen and Stephens;

Seider and Oesterle had some issues as well, but Detroit was able to dump and change with 3:06 gone;

Off the next faceoff, Seider and DeKeyser worked the puck deep and Bertuzzi got the puck caught in his pants;

Suter, Bertuzzi and Raymond cycled, worked the perimeter like a power play, and a bad pass by Raymond–another blind Frolunda pass–afforded Buffalo relief.

At the other end, NEDELJKOVIC made a big glove stop on a one-timer by Jeff Skinner, off a pass by Rasmus Asplund;

Detroit was playing too fast and loose.

5 minutes into the 2nd period, Veleno, Zadina and Fabbri came over the boards, cycled, and Veleno JUST fired the puck wide of the net in the slot;

Off a turnover, Veleno, Zadina and Fabbri continued to cycle, Staal and Oesterle got in on the fun, and Oesterle’s shot was gloved by Tokarski.

Buffalo then cycled into the Wings’ zone, and Namestnikov made a high block with 13:58 remaining in the 2nd to usher in a TV timeout.

When play resumed, Gagner, Stephens and Namestnikov had a heavy shift, but gave up a 4 on 3, and Buffalo was happy to trade chances;

Buffalo was getting chances, too, and the Wings were sloppy;

But Raymond nearly fed Bertuzzi for a 1-timer cross crease;

Staal stuffed a Sabre trying to jab the puck into an open net;

7:35 into the 2nd, Detroit chipped and changed, and Buffalo stole the puck from Nick Leddy, then Bertuzzi on a long shift, and Butcher fired a heavy shot in that was tipped wide of the net;

Veleno did a great job dekeing and dangling his way into the offensive zone;

And Buffalo kept generating chances that the Wings were blocking or tipping wide some 8:27 into the 2nd…It was concerning.

Rasmussen just couldn’t buy a break, either.

He did block a shot and chug up ice with the puck, but his linemates went offside, so he had to change and afford the Stephens-Gagner-Namestnikov line a shift instead.

Dahlin dangled and forced Hronek to follow him, Okposo and Butcher played catch with Dahlin, and Detroit blocked the puck out to center, but Dahlin chipped and Girgensons chased, Buffalo worked the puck out front, and Nedeljkovic had to stop a high shot;

Dahlin continued to dangle, but Nedeljkovic made a huge stop on the uber-talented Sabbres forward…

Buffalo took over some 11 minutes into the 2nd.

Skinner, Asplund and Bryson worked the puck to Thompson, Bertuzzi stole it, and Skinner stole the puck back, Buffalo regrouped at center, and Skinner skated around Nedeljkovic, who tried to poke the puck away…

Tage Thompson scored as a result, tying the game 1-1.

Aaaand the other shoe has dropped.

Tage Thompson scored from Jeff Skinner at 11:32, tying the game at 1-1…

And on the ensuing shift, Detroit took a penalty, with Joe Veleno going for holding at 12:04.

ON THE PENALTY-KILL…

Buffalo won the draw, cycled, down low to the top of the blueline, with Dahlin feeding Butcher, Skinner fired the shot wide, Asplund could not reach the puck, he fed it to Dahlin and Dahlin scored on a point shot that went off the goalpost and in.

Dahlin scored to make it 2-1 on the power play, off a pass from Butcher and Asplund at 12:36.

This Rasmus Dahlin goal has a nice ring to it. ? pic.twitter.com/b33S1FqrgD— NHL (@NHL) November 7, 2021

Buffalo took a 2-1 lead because Asplund checked Seider into Nedeljkovic’s sight line.

Detroit was suddenly being out-shot 16-10 and out-attempted 34-18.

Detroit DID TRY TO TIE THE GAME but Givani Smith and Adam Erne were stifled by Tokarski making a stick stop.

Buffalo regained control of the puck, as you might expect, and Nedeljkovic had to make a big stop with Couzens standing over him with 6:05 remaining in the 2nd.

Buffalo just won draws, cycled, won draws, cycled, and when they were forced out to center ice, they regrouped.

Zadina, Veleno and Fabbri did try to generate a chance in the offensive zone, aided by Seider, with 5:25 remaining, but the Sabres were easily able to cover the Wings and clear the zone.

Detroit managed to generate a couple of attempts in on Tokarski, but Raymond flubbed a shot wide, pinching, and Buffalo only didn’t score on the 3-on-2 because Leddy lay down to block the Sabres’ shot;

With 3:39 remaining in the 2nd, Buffalo chugged up 3 on 2, Okposo and Girgensons lost the puck to Gagner, he swept the puck deep, Tokarski sent the puck around to his defensemen, and Buffalo cleared the zone;

17:00 into the 2nd period, Erne fed the puck into the slot, Seider whiffed, and Buffalo roared up 2 on 1, but DeKeyser made a good block, and Seider came back to tie up the second Sabre’s stick.

In a set of frenzied action, Rasmussen and Veleno stole the puck at the offensive blueline, and Rasmussen fired a heavy shot in on Tokarski, who made the stop…

Some 18:05 into the 2nd, a TV timeout hit, and as play resumed, Buffalo continued a strong 2nd period, pushing the Wings back into their own zone, and Veleno and company were trying to generate some offense, but they were battling a heavy Sabres backcheck.

In the final minute of play in the 2nd period, Thompson made a between-the-legs pass to the slot that was blocked off;

Bertuzzi, Raymond and Suter at least generated a cycle;

And Detroit emerged from the 2nd period down 2-1 because NEDELJKOVIC made TWO big stops at the end of the period.

In the 3rd period…

The first few minutes were uneventful for me, because I got physically ill and had to use the restroom. I didn’t get into the 3rd until 5 minutes of playing time into the 3rd, at which time the score was still 2-1 Buffalo;

Detroit looked sharper, and Staala fired a hard shot in on Tokarski that was stifled with Bertuzzi, Veleno and Fabbri buzzing the front of the net off a staggered change;

Detroit looked much more confident and determined as the Wings won the next faceoff, but Hronek’s shot was blocked, Couzens and Caggiula were blocked off, but Detroit iced the puck with 14:20 remaining in regulation.

Buffalo continued to press, and Nedejlkovic had to make a SUPERB stop on Couzens in front as he snuck away from Veleno and Hronek and Leddy, who were all focused on the puck, not the player;

Buffalo then scored a 3-1 goal as the Sabres won the faceoff, worked the puck back to Colin Miller, Miller delayed, tossed the puck at Nedeljkvic, and Staal was left alone by Oesterle.

Staal could not hold off Ruotsalainen, and suddenly, it was 3-1.

Ruotsalainen! 3-1 #LetsGoBuffalo pic.twitter.com/2Uu7lPXhP4— MSG Networks (@MSGNetworks) November 7, 2021

Arttu Ruotsalainen made it 3-1 from Miller and Hayden at 6:08 of the 3rd period.

Cozens then skated in on the ensuing shift, blasting a heavy shot in on Nedeljkovic with 13:21 remaining. Nedeljkovic made the stop.

Dahlin fired another shot on net after the TV timeout hit;

Buffalo began to really work their tails off in the Wings’ zone, and DeKeyser was de-sticked illegally, but the Sabres were not called for a penalty;

The Bertuzzi-Suter-Raymond line couldn’t generate any offense, and Nedeljkovic had to make a strong stop to keep the Wings down by 2.

With only 11:40 remaining, Stephens, Gagner and Namestnikov were working together to cycle in the Sabres’ zone, but they were stifled by the Sabres;

Buffalo’s Vinnie Hinostroza skated into the Wings’ zone unobstructed instead, and Staal had to come back to stifle his chance;

With no penalties being called, even as Namestnikov tripped a Sabre, Detroit struggled to control the puck coming out of their own zone, and you could hear an audible, “F***!” from Oesterle as he turned over the puck, and Buffalo generated a shot as a result;

LUCAS RAYMOND then RACED IN OFF A SABRES TURNOVER and fired a shot over the goal, and a PENALTY SHOT WAS NOT CALLED. Instead, Cozens headed to the penalty box for tripping at 10:01.

ON THE POWER PLAY, Detroit lost the initial faceoff, and had to chase the puck down ice.

Raymond was fed by Seider, gave the puck back to Seider on the PP possession deep, Gagner cycled, Seider and Zadina gave the puck to each other, Bertuzzi was double teamed, and Buffalo’s Pysyk cleared the puck easily;

Seider performed a Datsyuk Drop at center to Zadina, who charged up ice, and Bertuzzi made a terrible pass to the slot to no one, and Buffalo cleared the zone;

The 2nd unit took to the ice 1:10 into the PP, with Leddy skating in himself, only to be stopped by Tokarski;

Fabbri was stopped by Tokarski as well, and the Sabres cleared the zone;

Suter, Hronek, Leddy, Fabbri and Rasmussen worked the puck in deep from a center ice faceoff, Leddy fed Fabbri, he found Leddy, Hronek one-timed a shot, and Tokarski stopped the puck as the penalty expired, and Cozens stole the puck from Leddy, almost rushing in 1-on-0, only to be stopped by Leddy.

And the Wings went offside with 7:45 remaining, punctuating the expired penalty with futility.

Tage Thompson was having a night, too; on the next shift, he roared in and fired a hard, heavy shot in on Nedeljkovic, who made a big stop;

Buffalo looked to shut the Red Wings down, and they struggled to do so vs. Bertuzzi, Raymond, DeKeyser and Suter, who were cycling well in the offensive zone;

And Lucas Raymond fed the puck back and forth to Dekeyser, he skated deep, and Tyler Bertuzzi scored on a one-timer from the slot to make it 3-2. Seider made the play happen by covering the point.

BERT’S FIRST OF THE NIGHT. pic.twitter.com/cVTXHDtXpy— Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) November 7, 2021

Seider made that play happen. Raymond fed him twice, then got the puck back, fed DeKeyser, who pinched, and Bertuzzi was able to get free of the coverage in the slot as a result.

Big play by everybody there. Even Suter did a nice job of staying at the front of the net.— George Malik (@georgemalik) November 7, 2021

Tyler Bertuzzi scored from DeKeyser and Raymond at 13:24, making it 3-2.

Detroit continued to press after getting a surprising goal, and the Suter line hopped back over the boards, and Raymond fed Suter, Suter saw Bertuzzi charging through the slot, and Bertuzzi walked through Dahlin and scored the game-tying goal on Tokarski with 5:06 remaining in regulation.

Tyler Bertuzzi wasn’t done with one goal, had to get two to tie! #LGRW pic.twitter.com/mJtrK87DM8— Bally Sports Detroit (@BallySportsDET) November 7, 2021

Bertuzzi scored the 3-3 goal from Raymond and Suter at 14:54.

With under 5 minutes remaining, the Red Wings gave Rasmussen’s line a shift, then Zadina, Veleno and Fabbri, who cycled deep, pushed the Sabres’ D off the puck, and worked it back to their defense;

Staal, Oesterle and Fabbri broke up a Sabres chip in that should have been icing, but was not;

Buffalo regained control and cycled deep in Detroit’s zone, with Girgensons and Okposo doing a fine job opposite a tired D pair;

Bertuzzi, Seider and Gagner worked together to feed Suter and then Bertuzzi, who WHIFFED WIDE going for a hat trick;

Nedeljkovic stopped Tage Thompson on a break-in;

With 2:30 remaining, Gagner fed Stephens, and the Wings worked quite well to stifle the Sabres’ rushes;

Playing with confidence, we hit a final TV timeout with 2 minutes remaining in regulation.

As the final few minutes of regulation wound down, Detroit was attempting to sustain a forecheck, and Raymond was fed by Rasmussen as Blashill inexplicably went to the line blender again…

Seider and DeKeyser worked with the trio to tie up Okposo and Skinner and Girgensons, and Fabbri and Namestnikov worked the puck in deep;

Bertuzzi and Suter hopped over the boards, with Fabbri, and Hronek helped re-set at center;

Buffalo chopped and changed, and Nedeljkovic fed Bertuzzi, Suter sent the puck up to Raymond, Suter was stopped, and Raymond fed Bertuzzi for one final chance…

And the teams headed to overtime tied 3-3.

OVERTIME BEGAN with Rasmussen, Bertuzzi and Leddy, and the trio forced a steal in which Rasmussen went off after the faceoff, Bertuzzi stole the puck from the Sabres’ defenseman, and skated in alone.

Tokarski made a big stop.

With 4:41 remaining in OT, Rasmussen came back out for a faceoff, lost it, and Buffalo set up;

Raymond missed the pass, Asplund took the pass from Bryson, Asplund gave it to Thompson, the Sabres walked in, regrouped at the blueline, and Bryson deked, dangled, avoided Rasmussen, Thompson set up in the slot and fired a shot on Nedeljkovic that was stopped.

Raymond skated up ice, turned back, Buffalo changed, and Rasmussen took the puck, dropped it to no one, and Detroit regrouped.

Zadina skated up ice with 3:38 remaining, Fabbri ripped a heavy shot in on Tokarski, and he flubbed the puck out of his glove, right to Hronek…

But the whistle blew.

Detroit lost the next faceoff, and Fabbri got away with a trip on Dahlin.

Eakin, Dahlin and company cycled, set up in their own zone, and changed.

Girgensons fed Skinner, he was stopped, Girgensons and Skinner played catch, backed out to center, and re-set;

Hronek stole the puck, Veleno fed the puck to the slot, and his shot was stopped;

ON a 3 on 2, Asplund was blocked off;

Seider worked the puck in and SCORED THE GAME WINNER HIS FIRST IN THE NHL!
